Aluu 4 suspects remanded in custody;3 recount what transpired that day

The 13 suspects arrested in connection with the murder of four UNIPORT students have been charged before a Port Harcourt Magistrate on a five-count charge of conspiracy and murder and were yesterday remanded in prison till the case comes up again in December. The Nigeria Police Force has also dismissed the policeman who was part of the mob that killed the students. The policeman has been identified as Lucky Orji.

Now continue to read three suspects' account of what happened that day...

David Ugbaje's recount
“Around 7 am, I left my house. I dressed up to go to work. On my street, I saw a crowd of people with four unclad boys, who were being led into my compound, No. 9, Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I said what was the problem and they said the boys were armed robbers. I said that is my compound, let us go and see the person, if he is their member or let them point the particular person, who is their member they were going to look for”.

“I opened the gate, they entered. A crowd of people that I could not control. They entered the compound. They pointed to the room of one of our co-tenants, whose name is Bright. They said one of the boys was staying with Bright. When they got there, Bright’s door was locked. Some people wanted to break the door. They started beating the boys. Very serious. Along the line, two policemen came around. One of the policemen was pleading. The other policeman joined in beating the boys and later said the crowd should hand over the boys to them, but the crowd said ‘no’. ‘We no go gree, we no go gree’.

“As the policemen were leaving, they said whatever this thing was going to bring, you would bear the result. Since I live in the yard, I said if I stayed there and the people were killed, automatically, the house would be in trouble. We are now in trouble. I brought out my belt; I started flogging people and asked them to leave the yard. I was beating the people (crowd) very seriously”.

“One Ikwerre man in the crowd asked why I was beating the crowd for the boys to be moved from our yard. I continued to beat the crowd to carry the boys to where they brought them from. I drove them out of our compound and gate. They injured me in my hand, when I was trying to open the gate”.

“I started flogging for them to leave. There is water in our (house’s) frontage. They went there and soaked the boys (four) inside the water. I discovered that one of the boys was my customer on campus, at the University of Port Harcourt, where I work. He was an Igbo student. I asked the boy: are you a student?
“If you watch the video, you will see me where I held a belt, asking the boy. The boy told me ‘no’, that he was not a student (of UNIPORT). Quite all right, I knew him very well. He once bought slippers from me and used to repair slippers from me. I am a shoemaker at UNIPORT”.

Maybe the boy was afraid to tell me he was a student. There was nothing I could do because of the crowd. If I talked more than that, they could join me with them.

“The beating was going on, here and there. At the end, they finally moved the boys out of my street. I then went out. My wife has just been delivered of a baby.”

On his role in the lynching of the four students, Ugbaje said: “I flogged the boys twice.”

Amadi's account of what happened
“I live at No. 9. Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I am from Ikwerre. I work at UNIPORT. I am a printer. I do photocopying and binding. In the morning on that day, I dressed up, as usual, so that I could go to my work. When I came out at the junction, so that I could pick a bike, I saw a crowd of people, with four boys. They were unclad, with tyres on their necks”.

“I shifted a bit, but to verify what was happening, they told me the four boys came to rob. I asked where they were taking them to. They said they were taking them to No. 9, where I live”.

They said they mentioned one of our neighbours. That they came to look for him as well.
“I followed the crowd. Before I reached my estate, they had already reached the house with the four boys in front of my neighbour, Bright, from Ogoni. They said they were looking for one of the boys. Before they came, the back door was locked. Some of the people in the crowd said they were going to break the back door. Others said no, they should leave the door, since Bright was not around. At the end, they started beating the boys”.

“They started beating the boys. In the process of beating the boys, policemen came, but they said no, they were not going to leave the four boys. I called this my neighbour (David Chinasa Ugbaje), with other neighbours, that we were not going to allow that kind of thing to take place in our estate that we would be in trouble.

“This my neighbour (Ugbaje) collected his belt. I collected a small stick, and we started chasing people, flogging everybody, to take the boys out of our yard. We started pushing everybody out, including the four students. They left their tyres, I said they should take their tyres out of the yard and we locked our gate.
“I flogged everybody, including the four boys, for everybody to go out. I beat one of the four boys twice and the other one, I beat once.

Segun Lawal
“My name is Segun Lawal. I am from Osun State. I live in Omuokiri-Aluu. I was in the house, around 6:30 am to 7 am. I am a taxi driver. I saw a crowd and I parked my car outside. I saw a police vehicle coming and I followed the police. I saw four policemen. I saw the policemen enter the gate”.

“As I reached the gate, they were beating the boys. I had to raise my hands up, to defend the boys. If you watch the video, you will see it. I wore blue polo shirt. I started pleading for the crowd not to kill the four boys. They did not listen”.

“The Policemen left immediately. I had to leave. As I left, I went to GRA (Port Harcourt); one of my customers called that I should take him to Obudu Cattle Ranch (in Cross River State).
“I came back on Saturday night (October 6). I was in my house. Policemen came to arrest me. I never had this type of experience. I told the police that I was not around. That I traveled to Obudu. I did not beat the four boys.”

    1. Exactly, I saw that video and I saw more than 13 people in it. What kind of nonsense is this? Some people will go free while others will suffer. They should make those guys to confess and mention more names. Just 13 people imagine the rubbish may the spirit of those boys hunt all of them forever and ever.

  11. From what im reading i think the policemen are at fault. If they had shot one bullet in the air im sure everybody would have scattered and then they could have put the boys in their van and driven off. Also the time the boys were out made it believable that they were armed robbers it was in the early hours of the morning they were found. If the police had done their job the matter would have been resolved. A lot of these killings happen a lot i remember in Lagos when okada men were snatching peoples bags and thieves were being burnt with tyres. An angry mob can do anything but were policemen are doing their jobs it cant happen.

  12. But wait from their account it seems Aluu isn't exactly a village in the sense we all imagine. it just seems like a small town with different people from different places. Let history not repeat itself God is watching everything. To me it seems the police just went to a compound and packed everybody they saw. Somebody stripped those boys, hung tyres on them and set them on fire. Somebody set them up by calling them thieves. Where are those people. Are we going to let these ones fall for a crime they did not commit? Justice for Aluu!

The police needs Bright. Oh Lord Jesus, only if the dead could speak right? I just hope they get the right people. Killing innocent people doesnt solve anything. Im so heavy hearted right now. Only God knows the truth on this matter. But I feel our lazy police force just picked up bright neighbours just 2satify the people anger, whereas the scotland yard or american police may take years in proper investigation. It is well. the poor boys must have been screaming at the top of their voices that the cursed bright owed them money, but the thick cab drivers/shoe makers would not even listen to a word and just knocked their teeth out.

pls whoever the prosecutors are, make note of the fact that they have admitted to hitting the boys, which already constitutes assault. they must rot in jail

Nigeria is so backward & corrupt! If this had happened in a developed country, especially with a video recording, by now their faces would be all over tv stations.

  36. Thank God for the person who shot the video of the murder. Quiet often, Nigeria Police rope in innocent pple when there is a crime. They should go back and watch the video well - with that they will know the actual culprits (they are so daft that they do not know how to do a proper investigation with first hand evidence). I can see the Yoruba man is innocent and like some of have said, they went to a compound to take pple living there. What about the guy who did the actual killing ?What about the Police men that came and did nothing- arrect them and charge them for murder! Leave those pple u arrested. Hunt for Bright and the person who hit them with wood, the person who set them ablaze, the person who wore tire round them. Yes they went early so that they cld catch up with the debtor! Justice in Nigeria is always twisted !

Wat the police would have done is to force the chief to name the members of the vigilant grp. From there we go know who contribute tyres,Fuel, matches, planks, stones etc and aslo other people that were fully involved in the killing of the boys. Abi the village chief don bribe the police? 52. they police probably just rounded up whoever they found at the time. But it is good the comm.head is arrested, he had better start opening his mouth and name the attackers. I presume it is a small community so they should all be able to name the people in the video. The girl was there when they set them ablaze. They know who the attackers are.

  62. The guy that spilt Ugonna's brain has been identified as Chigozie Samuel Evans. If he hasn't been caught, then the police is lazy as usual about this. Surely, people know him personally, where he comes from, his parents' home, his siblings' residence. He couldn't have disappeared into thin air. He is hiding somewhere.
The vigilante group played the main role in the actual killing. The video is rife. People can hunt these killers down. The police needs help to track them down. Even in advanced countries, phone calls help the police to track down criminals.
The media has a very important role to play too. Someone said on ghis blog that Chigozie Samuel Evans has a picture on his facebook profile. Linda dear, please look for this picture and post it on your blog. You can do us and these boys this service. Others who have clips and pics of the other killers can send them too!
As for those shouting they hit the boys once or twice, it doesn't make any difference. Did they hit them? Yes. It's part of the killing. They gave others the moral support and the impetus to finish the jobs they started.

    1. Exactly.. Ive been reading thru this blog and you have just hit the nail on the head. In my opinion, the police just went into a compound and rounded up everyone there, so as to be seen to be doing their job.. Such impetus. Im sorry to say, if you struck the guys once twice..half a time, you are guilty and should be punished. Those guys were half dead from beating anyway, before they were burnt. And to split someones head open?.. all the perpetrators should be brought to book. They still have to arrest a lot more people, even though I believe a lot of them have run away from Aluu.. but whoever is caught will face the consequence and it doesnt matter if it takes a year or 10 years.. those involved will face the music..

I don't knw why some of u are being soft over the murder of full grown men, no where in all the stories did I hear that anyone was beating the crowd to stop. All these men are just liars, our God is not asleep, they will all pay for their wickedness, as for the Bright and the man hitting them on the head, they can run from now till enternity but they will definitely pay for their crimes, their destiny is already doomed, they shed innocent blood, they must pay for it with their lives. From what I gathered from these suspects, aluu4 slept in aluu in order to go to bright's house early mo mo. They went and reached an agreement to take bright's laptop and phone(there was violence if not these suspects wud mention it). They(aluu4) went back to the place they slept while bright not happy abt it starting thinking evil thoughts on how to deal with them, made contacts to someone or people. And he must have gave the pple direction to where Aluu4 wud be cos from the suspects story, the mob had to come back to bright's house probably for bright to recount the alleged robbery. But met bright's absence still the went ahead to beat the boys...uwa nka sef! RIP Aluu4 **sumboy pikin*

    ReplyDelete
  91. My take on this is....all the arrested suspects knew about the event on that day...wheter they beat the boys once or twice or not at all.....what did they do to stop it....? did they call for help even anonymously? NO. Instead they brought out their belt or stick or as one of them said...drove away...The boys were innocent...just as some of the suspects may b too...
i pray justice is done on all these suspects and even more....I hope they all rot in prison...MURDER is not a small thing...it shows that the hearts of these people are not only wicked, they are diabolic, sick and pervet.......May the lord accept the souls of Ugonna, Lloyd, Tenaka and Chidiaka.....Amen

  92. Where is that man that was hitting the boys with stick? and the one that said " c dis one neva die" den they threw stone on him so he wil die and started hittin them with stick as if they where killin ANACONDA SNAKE. The police should walk with the video clip and get every one involved because the killers are more than 20. Even Jesus that came to die for our sin did not go thru d pain and touture the boys went thru.

  93. It appears the mob had (in the early phase of their evil march), led the 4 boys to Brights compound so that Bright can confirm that he owed them money and they were not actually thieves as he had falsely indicated. However, Bright had raised the false alarm, handed them over to the killers and ran away from the compound, leaving them defenseless.
There's no doubt that before the next court appearance, more truth will be extracted from these same people making watery statements. They can't all rightly claim ignorance; they will be forced to talk for sure! Justice must prevail.

  102. Does Uniport have a students' Union Government? That useless lot should be disbanded. Umuokiri Aluu has many students living there. How could they have allowed their students to be lynched and then burnt? Are students not among those who watched and filmed it? What did the student body do? Remember, the humiliation and show of shame lasted for 2 hours. Can the student union president and his exco say they were not informed? Even if at the time they were accused of stealing, should they be handled this way?
I know what a student body can do under the right leadership. Those at Uniport SUG are impotent cowards. They are passively responsible for the death of these boys. They should beat the guilt too.
I am an alumnus of UNN, and I know such cannot happen in Nsukka. They didn't even demonstrate until NANS came on Monday. What kind of students union is this? They should be dissolved immediately, and replaced with brave and sensible people.
It is just sad that the dead can't come back.. RIP U L T C

If not for social media the whole thing would died a silent death!!!
That village is cursed. Their soil is cursed. Their children are cursed. Their food is cursed. Heeeee! My mind will never forget what my eyes evil, useless people do to our four young boys... heeeeee!!!! they should better reveal the name of all the other participants. They were even hailing each other, telling the person hitting the not to stop. Heeeee!!!!! death penalty is the only option for justice here, and even that is more merciful that what Tekena, Ugonna, Chidiaka and Lloyd got. And no one, not even an armed robber, deserves that kind of death. We are human beings for Christ's sake. Even if people are eveil, are we going to be evil like them and turn to animals. Haaa!

  106. am somehow confused here. i tot somebody (bright, i suppose) shouted thieves thieves while the guys where still in that same compound. So how come David said ' I saw a crowd of people with four unclad boys, who were being led into my compound, No. 9, Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu'
then, Amadi said he asked where they were taking them to and they said they were taking them to No. 9 (bright's compound)
My question is....how come Bright shouted thieves and he suddenly disappeared into thin air and locked everywhere in a jiffy. that should have given them a sense of reasoning that the poor guys were innocent since the person that raised the alarm is no where to be found....well, God knows and sees everything and He will judge everyone accordingly

    ReplyDelete
  107. See our NPF, don go arrest innocent people, i know that David Ugbajeway back 2002,when i was in UNIPORT.He has always been on a calm and respectful guy. They go dig well and fish out the real culprits. Because they only caught the people available during the time of investagation

How on earth does a policeman leave a huge crowd of people that are mercilessly beating four men? I am absolutely outraged at the way our policemen conduct themselves, I am embarassed for them really! Don't they have radio equipment to call for back up or something...they just leave the scene and hope everything would go away! God save this nation!

They've started again, telling us porky pies; they are now saying they didnt beat the boys, they beat them once or twice or they were not around, they should therefore tell the police who beat the boys. Also, people are defending Segun Lawal; no problem if he didnt participate in the atrocity; but he can therefore inform the world who the culprits are. No point incriminating innocent people again.

Also, Tekana's sister from her transcripts said she was in a compound nearby when she heard all the noise and she went to scene to plead and returned to pit when they set the boys on fire. She should come and point them out, presumably she knows the village quite well.

What about the viligant group on duty that morning. And where is the face of the policeman who ordered the mob to burn them alive and also beat the boys? Surely, he also can point out his fellow culprits. The mob took the boys to the village head, can the village head tell the world who brought the boys to him? NPC do we need to do your jobs for you? Not a very good investigation thus far, sit up please

That Aluu community and all those who participated will never see peace, may they remain cursed for the rest of their days. R.I.P LTUC, I believe your gentle souls are resting in the bossom of our heavenly father
