After he got down, (Photo on the right - Afeez is the one in Lemon shirt), people started slapping him around and abusing him for wanting to commit suicide, instead of getting him help. His friends eventually carried him away and the crowd dispersed.
That same night, Afeez succeeded in killing himself. Continue reading...
The following morning, which was yesterday Sunday Sept 1, neighbours woke up to the sad news. Afeez had succeeded in killing himself. He drank poison in the night and died.
Afeez' body being removed from his home...wrapped in white cloth. Truly truly sad. If only suicidal people get the help they need before killing themselves.
So sad.....

ReplyDeleteThis type of thing pisses me off. Na blood go dey those peoples hands that slapped him.
We have a long way to go in Nigeria, if it was abroad, they would ve calld d relevant authorities wen he was discovered on the electric pole, ths people will talk him to come down and take him away 4 counsellin immediately, but in Naija, d neighbours cld only slap and abuse him, no one cld volunteer to stay wit him or get a number of a relative to call to let them know or come over... Just do something to help. The person who sent Linda these pics too was probably just sitting at home taking pics of everything from d climbing to d corpse bn carried away, maybe if she/he had used d church mind to just go over and talk to d victim, he may ve reconsidered his suicide. If Govt isn't helping us, we really need to be our brother's keeper.
ReplyDeleteVery sad

My dear the person might not be able to do anytin, from d pic u can see d person is snapin from a far place sef.this place na ghetto,no superman for ghetto
DeleteLet him who has no sin cast the first stone.
ReplyDeleteHe may have committed suicide but all the supporting of fornication and watching of videos with nudity is not better or worse than what he has done. So SHUT UP all of you.
I rest my case :))
By the way, To Anonymous September 3rd, 2012 10:19am.
He had already made up his mind to commit suicide. People only delayed it. Shut up about that 3rd country stuff because Nigeria has one of the lowest suicide rates (less than 0.1 per 100000). America has a suicide rate of 19 per 100000 so shut up you idiot.
Once again, let him who has no sin cast the first stone. *Wink*
Choi! Dem take "shut up" swear 4 u? Na wa! Dat ur mouth need acid wash.
DeleteIf we are developed enough those crowd would have take him to a psychiatrist for counseling and rehab instead they slapped and intimidated him which did more harm than good.www.brandigest.wordpress.com
ReplyDeletePsychiatrists offer medications like antidepressants and antipsychotics. Counselling is done by psychologists

ReplyDeleteNa wao.
ReplyDeleteoh, what a pity!, but seriously is there any help for such pple in naija?
ReplyDeleteThis is another sad case where ignorance leads to un-necessary waste of a human life. Unfortunately this young man is dead but those neighbors that slapped him around when he was talked down during an earlier should be arraigned for involuntary manslaughter. May be that is not the legal term to use but there should be some measure of punishment for them. If this was a sane society they will be at the minimum arrested. What ever was wrong with that young man he did not deserve to be left alone to take his own life. May His soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteWat cud have made him do it••
ReplyDeleteI feel sad for my country :( Why should they even slap him???? may his soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteAnd please, if you know any suicidal person, try to get them the help they need immediately. This life could be frustrating and we are bound to be depressed. Plsssss be your brother's keeper
So sad may his soul rest in peace. Suicide is not the answer
ReplyDeleteDelicious Linda, now I love u again. People like this need help and abuse from ignorant Nigerians. Linda it seems us UK peeps influenced u wella:)
ReplyDeleteJisos eh!I was dere o!it happuned on saturday.but the guy came down na.so he later killed himself?too bad.naija pple sef.they were beatin me sef

DeleteRubbish!! Is That dude a True Nigerian? Make una check well .. Nonsense !! Is his problem bigger than people Wey dey live for apongbon under bridge? .. Em even dey stay for lere sef and well known for en area too!! Mtsheeew !! Abegi next!!!!! , NO TRUE 9JA PIKIN WILL THINK OF COMMITING SUICIDE
ReplyDeleteYour true Naija pikin mentality is what makes nigeria a bad country today! Depression is a real disease and it can affect anyone! It pushes people to commit suicide! Your ignorance is overflowing, please do something about it!
Deletemorlard. just pray not to find yourself in some situations.
Deletei am fully 9ja, educated and al dat shit and i av thot of it once. and if not for 2close frnds, i prob wld have.
Morland, get real- people have problems, and not everyone has the strength of mind to face these problems squarely.
DeleteI know someone who had issues, and I and his loved ones didn't pay attention.
We thought he could handle it and right after this he took his life. Sometimes people feel so despondent and dissapointed by life that they make wrong decisions (suicide)-bottom line, we should pay attention to pple around us and quit being so self absorbed- it still hurts HE IS GONE.
The rate of suicide these days is on the rise. One can only imagine what could have led him to this point.
ReplyDeleteReally sad. The situations in the country encourage things like this and if someone doesn't have mind, will definitely do worse things. May God forgive him his sins
ReplyDeleteHummmm you see we need to show people love why slaping him? may his soul rest.
ReplyDeleteSo sad..... Could someone tell those who were slapping him that they actually aided his death?
ReplyDeleteSad!
ReplyDeleteSad!
ReplyDeleteHe must have had enuf sledgehammer 4rm dis wicked world. Perhaps prayed so much yet heaven won't just open 4 him. It takes courage 2 keep hanging in, in d midst of turbulence. Very sad. *amrra*
ReplyDeleteIt is sad, me and a friend were talking about the main problem of our country. I feel its our mindset. People generally lack knowledge and understanding.
ReplyDeleteWhat is worse is that we allow the forces of the "dark ages" (ignorance, over-religion, greed, love of wealth) to dictate our beliefs. If people were willing to seek knowledge and understand the reasons why things around them are the way are. Some people will claim that he was possessed, when really what he needed was an understanding ear, watchful eyes, loving arms and
someone who can talk him out of the line of thought he was in at that moment.
God will one day free us from such evil
Very well said! I wish there were more nigerians that think like you :)
DeleteI don't mean to be insensitive bt dat guy just got me laughing. Trying so hard to die. Its sad. Country sef no easy.
ReplyDeleteThis is truly sad. You're so right. He shd have been given the help he needed. If rejection was what pushed him up that pole, then the slaps only drove in the nail...
ReplyDeletethis is sad, instead of helping him and finding out what is wrong, they slapped n abused him. God help us all. Amen.
ReplyDeleteI have learn a long time not to condemn people who make suicidal attempts. There are lots of variable causes. You may think that u both have the same problem, while you cope well and Mr. B doesn't cope well. Do you have the same background? Experience the same parenting? Same nature and nurture make up? Suicide is like every other form of sickness and should be given urgent attention it deserve and not abuse we heap on the sufferers.
ReplyDeleteWEll written ekene!
DeleteI think sth lead him into the act. May be the hardship in this country showed him the way or may be his long time girl broke his heart. Tell him to say 'Hello' to the devil when he gets to hell fire state.

ReplyDeleteThe first and only RIP comment after all these stupid comments! You have a good heart jor!
DeleteGo back and read d comments, u will see som people actually said RIP.. U call discusing d terrible state of Nigeria and d abuse d deceased got from his neighbours 'stupid comment' then u re the stupid one.. Unfortunately we all know wat is said about people who take their lives. So let's leave his Resting in Peace to God
DeleteActually u r the stupid one! I read this comment before Linda decided to add more comments before it, like she always does! So don't act like I don't know what I'm talking about! The stupid comments I was referring too was to the people that said he is not a true Nigerian for committing suicide! Enough said!
DeleteLike beating him around was a solution. We still don't get it in this country. Why make it easy for someone who intends committing suicide. There is a police station around ko? or get him to the nearest worship center. Hope those guys are feeling good now. They had the chance to save a life but messed it all up.
ReplyDeletesuch a sad story
ReplyDeletevery sad story
ReplyDelete@Morlard.
ReplyDeleteThat stuff about true Nigerians not even considering suicide is false.
Before terrorism came, didn't we usually thought that it was impossible for a Nigerian to kill himself because of how much he loved his life? The case is not so now. Anyone can commit suicide. Sad really.
To any other person who wants to commit suicide- "Life is too short to commit suicide...be patient...you'll die!!
ReplyDeleteSigns of de end tym! its only self pity, rejection n depression dat can push 1into such act. may God help us all.
ReplyDeleteSucre's pride
Ok Linda, am still waiting 4 my comment o
ReplyDeleteY don't u post my comment nowadays?
ReplyDeleteMy God wat is dis country turning into?May God help US
ReplyDeleteGod haff left nigeria.U're all on a very long thing.Fix ur damn country!
DeleteSorry mister man.
ReplyDeleteThe rate of suicide dis days is so alarming.
ReplyDeletehe was just a selfish fool. what could have been the problem? selfish in the sense that he has put his parents in a terrible situation. and the pple are equally stupid for not advising and helping him over come this situation. silly silly
ReplyDeleteekene 11.39am thank u my sentiments exactly..mr emeka u are now Gods spokesperson abi?
ReplyDeleteSad. Where there is life, there is hope.
ReplyDeleteWonderful and good writeup. His condition is even better, he still have the money to buy poison. Anyway rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteWow, see what the term go hug a transformer pushed him to do! Anyways, jokes aside, nigerians need to work on their compassion level! They overuse religion claiming they are wonderful Christians, but what they did to this boy is opposite of Christianity! Jesus said we should follow His examples, would He have beat this boy if He was there? No! He would have embraced him and ask the boy what's wrong! Naija people change your mentality oooo!
ReplyDelete@ morlard I think that's a very dumb comment, what does his issue have to do with people in apongbon,do u even know the cause of his troubles, fine everyone knows suicide is wrong but at that time, the poor boy is just thinking of how to be rid of whatever issues his facing...please people should try to be sensitive...RIP
ReplyDeleteIts such a pityyyy...like I do say most times, if Mr A can cope with d hurdles of life does not mean Mr B can cope..but d thing is he shouldn't ve taken his own life.RIP
ReplyDeleteY shld a man take his life? Its a grievous sin. No matter wot a man passes tru, God is on d throne. May his soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteEverybody seek for happiness including those that commit suicide.Rest in Peace Azzez and i hope you find the happiness that you seek.
ReplyDeleteNa wa for this my country sef! What the hell do people use education for! Someone is obviously in emotional and psychological pains and needs some strong encouragement and support and what does he get? More abuses!!! I hope the neighbors are satisfied now!
ReplyDeleteMay his soul rest in peace. francisruff.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteSee how they love him with their slaps. I hope the "Slappers" are Happy Now. I have seen People who are more Catholic than the Pope. They Just want to show they care with Violence. Yet they cannot change his life with 500 Naira or the needed help at the Time. He shamed them all by taking his LIFE EVENTUALLY. Too bad He made it worse for taking the life that God gave him
ReplyDeleteEyah sad, if only he had gotten help, or someone has spent d nite with him, too bad.
ReplyDeleteWarri Girl
It's very pitiful, what must have made this man commit such an ... Anyhow i blame the people who beat and slapped him, they could have done better like advising him on what to do, instead of hitting im. It's very sad
ReplyDeleteU guys don't hv to blame him,he cld hv be suffering from a mental illness...dt's what we nigerian lack...every little things dt happen to sm1 pple believe is spiritual...is high time we nigerians shld wake up
ReplyDeleteIs not poison dat killed him, is the people that beat and slapped him after coming down from the pole, they should have helped him one way or the other..
ReplyDeleteI cnt imagine wot d scenerio was like whn they were abusing him, toba ku ko ku(if u want die, die) omo ale(bastards) sm will even suggest poison to him rather than thm to calm him down and give him a close watch for weeks...... Bt we feel less concern abt our neigbours. The country is frustrating but taking life is not d best option. RIP.
ReplyDeleteLol, @anon 12:58 , well dun , I have heard you!! And your still alive , Mtsheeew ! No matter what ! You aint charge of your life !.. @anon12:14 I agree with you to some point , n for that , I stand corrected ... But be it as it may and according to history , any Nigerian involved in terrorism local/international !! Did it for a course and wat they believe in...This one just woke up and decieded to die *sighs* @anon 1:07 lool.. Jah Bless ...

ReplyDeleteLINDA I WAS PRESENT THAT DAY.THAT YOUNG MAN DIDNT COME DOWN BECAUSE OF THE PLEADINGS,HE CAN DOWN BECAUSE HE COULDNT REACH THE CABLE WEN HE GOT TO THE ARMS OF THE HIGH TENSION.NO PLACE TO STEP ON,AND GUESS HE WASNT ACROBATIC ENOUGH TO USE HIS HAND AND GET TO THE CABLE
ReplyDeleteSo sad how emotional and mental illnesses are not considered standard illness in Nigeria! So sad indeed!
ReplyDeleteRest in peace sir
ReplyDeleteNawa ooooo
ReplyDeleteI can't even look at the pics...the rate people commit suicide is alarming...we all go through shii...but could it be that bad??..anyways I still believe we are in the last days to nothing shocks me anymore :(
ReplyDeleteThe Fashion Engineer
I feel really pained and sad over the young man's death. In this country, the lack of knowledge which subsequently breeds ignorance has led to a hole lot of disastrous reactions to those who obviously are in need of help.
ReplyDeleteThis young man was propably suffering from schzophrenia. The symptons include psychotic and depresssive symptons including hearing strange voices that urge you to take your life. It is nothing spiritual but MENTAL DISORDER.
In civilised climes, this young man should have been placed under medication and the watchful eyes of a trained psychologist to counsel him.
In Nigeria, any and everything is attributed to "spirutual attack".
One word of encouragement, some concern and show of love by taking him to a hospital should have saved his life. May the Good Lord forgive his soul and grant him eternal rest.
To those of us who slapped, sneered and jeered at him, I hope you are all satisfied
Rip young man. Suicide is never an option.
ReplyDeleteWhat is he seeing that others have not seen? When u think ur life is getting bad, go outside nd see those theirs ar worst. Ppl wishing 2 b like u. If na suicide hungry am make him go die buh if its spiritual may d rots of God visit d person. Some Alomo abeg
ReplyDeleteI hope they won't arrest the person that sold gammalin for him to drink.RIP so sad, when there is life, there is hope. This suicide orientation is a strange phenomenon for naija.
ReplyDeleteItz a truly sad story but I couldn't help laughing when I read that he was slapped when he came down from the pole.
ReplyDeleteMust watch http://watchunlimited.in/ for cool entertainment.
ReplyDeleteONOME says......
ReplyDeleteSuch a sad story really because it could have been averted.Someone attempts suicide just ONCE is a prime candidate to attempt it again.
So many things wrong in the whole setup. Why wasnt he hospitalised? He was slapped when he came down from the electric pole???When are we Nigians going to get it right???when?when?Good Lord when?? Sadly I doubt this sad story will change anything. It's just another day in the land of my birth.
RIP.
Rubbish.
ReplyDeleteWhy are people saying that His soul should rest in peace when His soul is damned in hell.
Suicide is a sin and is a direct entry to Hell.
Why will you take your life yourself you are simply telling GOD He did the worst mistake in creating you and keeping you alive.

But seriously he never thought of poisoning himself at first. There's knife in the kitchen, also there's rope somewhere around. Na PHCN pole. O man was sick. Climbing the pole up to 1cm is scary man. Maybe he's seen "Man on the ledge" and thought the govt will come around and donate some stipends and probably solve his problems when he comes down, instead na slaps. *sigh* May you find peace now while resting till eternity.
ReplyDeleteI feel pained. May his soul RIP
ReplyDeleteWe as Nigerians and Christains need to place a higher value on life... Don't knw what he must have been going through to make him want 2 kill himselve but I believe that if he'd gotten a kind word, empathy and counseling he would still be alive 2day! We are too quick 2 judge in dis country.. We don't have genuine love for ourselves..that's d problem.. We need 2 be more sympathetic to each other.. Cos everyone is fighting a unique battle and its only kindness and love that will save us... Imagine how different dis story would hav ended if someone had taken him to a church or mosque.. Or asked him what d problem was...a problem shared... Pls guys... Let's show more human sympathy...let's show more care..don't assume u can walk a mile in someones shoe... Cos trust me.. U can't!
ReplyDeleteOnyii
Mr Oracle, what's so funny about the fact that he was slapped? Its sad that they did that to him. I don't see how that's funny in any way. I guess its people that found it funny also that did that to him #justsaying
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that Nigerians think so negatively of mental illness. Even in the US, the general consensus is to "get over it" or "pray more/harder".
ReplyDelete***Lush
LIB readers can be mean .those comments got me laughing.suicide is never an option n am sorry to say dis he can't find happiness on d other side cos he took his own life.the bombs can start exploding#okbye
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of rehab are we talking about here? Am on the verge of doing the same,am still thinking of a pain free way to do it.
ReplyDeleteWhen your life cease to have a meaning, what do you do?
I remember when a friend died a year ago radio personals insulted her saying nigerians don't commit suicide that it was because she schooled in the UK. First of all we don't even know if its really suicide or murder? Who is doing the utopcy report? Who is investigating?....who cares in Nigeria? NO ONE. I HATE NIGERIA with a passion no need sugar coating it
ReplyDeleteHello My Sweet Linda,
ReplyDeleteSo sad, Only god knows what the poor man was going through. Nigeria is tough, but we must remain tougher.

This actually happened on my street, the guy in question, drinks like no tomorrow, that particular day, he was told to climb the nepa high tension for N1,000 by some guys, another offered him N1,000 again, after which he climbed and came down on Saturday, only to hear on Sunday that he died, so i guess the high voltage must have shut down some organs in his system one after the other. those guys are responsible for his death i must say
ReplyDeletehe needed counseling & help and not slapping and cursing! DARN!
ReplyDeleteHis soul rest in peace.
People talking about rehab and the likes...if you werre there, would you take him. We all know 9ja, you take him and something happens, the blam is on you......ogbeni clear road and then park well! No one will try to help him....you are on your own in 9ja!

ReplyDeleteThis is what we're saying dat when u have CHRIST in u, u already have life and nothing can make u b tired of this life cos d scripture also said 'the joy of the LORD is our strength'. Pls if u've not accepted CHRIST, this is an opportunity to do so now! So dat u are assured of eternal life. Just say: dear JESUS, i believe with my heart dat GOD raise u from d dead so therefore am saved. With my mouth i confess my salvation by accepting u as my LORD and persona SAVIOUR. Thank u for coming into my heart to wash away my sin, halellujah! Am born again, am a child of GOD, i live an unending life of glory. Glory to GOD! If u say this prayer, make sure u study ur scripture to further strengthen ur faith in the LORD. GOD BLESS YOU!
