Man commits suicide in Surulere (Photos)

I got this exclusive photos and story from people who live in the area...Olaitan street in Masha, Surulere. According to eye witnesses, they woke up early Saturday morning and saw a man known in the area as Afeez climbing the PHCN high tension electric pole you see above. (Photo on the left). Afeez had told friends the previous day that he didn't want to live anymore. A large crowd gathered and repeatedly begged him to come down, which he eventually did.

After he got down, (Photo on the right - Afeez is the one in Lemon shirt), people started slapping him around and abusing him for wanting to commit suicide, instead of getting him help. His friends eventually carried him away and the crowd dispersed.

That same night, Afeez succeeded in killing himself. Continue reading...
The following morning, which was yesterday Sunday Sept 1, neighbours woke up to the sad news. Afeez had succeeded in killing himself. He drank poison in the night and died.

Afeez' body being removed from his home...wrapped in white cloth. Truly truly sad. If only suicidal people get the help they need before killing themselves.

  10. We have a long way to go in Nigeria, if it was abroad, they would ve calld d relevant authorities wen he was discovered on the electric pole, ths people will talk him to come down and take him away 4 counsellin immediately, but in Naija, d neighbours cld only slap and abuse him, no one cld volunteer to stay wit him or get a number of a relative to call to let them know or come over... Just do something to help. The person who sent Linda these pics too was probably just sitting at home taking pics of everything from d climbing to d corpse bn carried away, maybe if she/he had used d church mind to just go over and talk to d victim, he may ve reconsidered his suicide. If Govt isn't helping us, we really need to be our brother's keeper.

He may have committed suicide but all the supporting of fornication and watching of videos with nudity is not better or worse than what he has done. So SHUT UP all of you.

    I rest my case :))

By the way, To Anonymous September 3rd, 2012 10:19am.

He had already made up his mind to commit suicide. People only delayed it. Shut up about that 3rd country stuff because Nigeria has one of the lowest suicide rates (less than 0.1 per 100000). America has a suicide rate of 19 per 100000 so shut up you idiot.

Once again, let him who has no sin cast the first stone. *Wink*

  23. This is another sad case where ignorance leads to un-necessary waste of a human life. Unfortunately this young man is dead but those neighbors that slapped him around when he was talked down during an earlier should be arraigned for involuntary manslaughter. May be that is not the legal term to use but there should be some measure of punishment for them. If this was a sane society they will be at the minimum arrested. What ever was wrong with that young man he did not deserve to be left alone to take his own life. May His soul rest in peace.

    3. Morland, get real- people have problems, and not everyone has the strength of mind to face these problems squarely.

I know someone who had issues, and I and his loved ones didn't pay attention.

We thought he could handle it and right after this he took his life. Sometimes people feel so despondent and dissapointed by life that they make wrong decisions (suicide)-bottom line, we should pay attention to pple around us and quit being so self absorbed- it still hurts HE IS GONE.

  35. It is sad, me and a friend were talking about the main problem of our country. I feel its our mindset. People generally lack knowledge and understanding.

What is worse is that we allow the forces of the "dark ages" (ignorance, over-religion, greed, love of wealth) to dictate our beliefs. If people were willing to seek knowledge and understand the reasons why things around them are the way are. Some people will claim that he was possessed, when really what he needed was an understanding ear, watchful eyes, loving arms and
someone who can talk him out of the line of thought he was in at that moment.
God will one day free us from such evil

You may think that u both have the same problem, while you cope well and Mr. B doesn't cope well. Do you have the same background? Experience the same parenting? Same nature and nurture make up? Suicide is like every other form of sickness and should be given urgent attention it deserve and not abuse we heap on the sufferers.

  75. I feel really pained and sad over the young man's death. In this country, the lack of knowledge which subsequently breeds ignorance has led to a hole lot of disastrous reactions to those who obviously are in need of help.

This young man was propably suffering from schzophrenia. The symptons include psychotic and depresssive symptons including hearing strange voices that urge you to take your life. It is nothing spiritual but MENTAL DISORDER.

In civilised climes, this young man should have been placed under medication and the watchful eyes of a trained psychologist to counsel him.

In Nigeria, any and everything is attributed to "spirutual attack".

One word of encouragement, some concern and show of love by taking him to a hospital should have saved his life. May the Good Lord forgive his soul and grant him eternal rest.

To those of us who slapped, sneered and jeered at him, I hope you are all satisfied
