Spanish mag puts Michelle Obama's head on a portrait of topless slave

Spanish magazine, Magazine de Fuera de Serie placed Michelle Obama's head in a 1800 portrait of a slave with an exposed breast, with an article that says - 'Michelle Granddaughter of a Slave, Lady of America'. Both Mrs Obama's great-great grandfather and great-great-great grandmother were slaves.

What do you think of this? Offensive? Racist? Artistic?

I dnt knw if the mag meant to be racist or not.
But I do remember that most of us here sided with the Dutch magazine that tried out a western kind of humour with the holy prophet.I rmember a lot of us prescribed the chill pill 4 as many who were offended.
By the way me is a Christian.

  20. Hey U guys sayings 'it's racist, beastly etc'. If it was our very own Patience Jonathan that was this portrayed wouldn't you say 'yes her illiterate head deserves it'

The painting is a reality; all black American, living or dead have ancestry roots in black slaves. The black americans don't deny their roots anyway. They even try to trace their lineage. So why the fuss?

    ReplyDelete
  21. In one word, STUPID!!! and that's no insult but absolute reality. how else do you describe the state of the mind who created this?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I can understand what they are trying to say. Who would ever thought a woman with ancestors who were slaves would one day be the First Lady of the USA. However, I feel as though they could have gotten the message across in another way. She is a classy lady anyways and I am sure will not be losing any sleep over this. Love you Michelle Obama!

Her ancestors must be smiling down on her with pride and joy.

    ReplyDelete
  77. This is very offensive, insultive and degrading. The magazine shuld b sued.

    ReplyDelete
  78. The message is ambiguous. And I believe it is meant to be so. It is what you call a veiled insult. It is also a message to the black race. The magazine would like to argue that it is a compliment. But lets look at this objectively. Yes, her great grand parents were slaves. But was she a slave? Besides, can anyone say with any certainty that her African ancestors were slaves? For all we know she could be of royal lineage. So in truth how far has she come? She has come just as far as all other first ladies before her. Therefore superimposing her face on a slave's body is not really a compliment in any way. What they are really saying is, 'Once a slave, always a slave'.

And the bottom line is this: They don't like you. Get over it and move on. And they will never respect you until you get your act together and start thinking of ways to do to them what they did (and are still doing) to you. We're not talking revenge here but just balancing a thoroughly lopsided equation.

Understand this. We are beginning to see the fightback against all the civil rights and other emancipation movements of the last century. Their economies are failing. And once again they are looking to rebuild on the backs of a tried, tested and very effective method. The earlier we Africans (and their descendants) begin to realise this and start thinking seriously of defensive and offensive mechanisms to stop this from ever happening again, the more secure our future and that of our descendants will be.

  81. @Anonymous, August 28, 2012 6:15 PM- Spain may be a racist country but we Nigerians and other black people have not really helped ourselves with our involvement in crime activities in Spain. Perhaps when we step back and reflect on why Nigerians are so unpopular in Spain, then we would not need to be under any illusions whatsoever.

  87. Black Americans should stop travelling to Spain on holidays. That would teach them sense. In fact, all black women should boycott Spanish holidays. I never knew that they were so racist.

A British magazine would never publish that. Not even American mags. It is above racism, it was to run her down. We Africans know that we were not from slaves and would not want to mock children of slaves.

  92. typical of the Spanish, racists and ignorant. its not only very offensive, its highly disrespectful, but as long as the object of their scorn is black, it wont mean much to them, its beyond their comprehension. they call us black people monkeys, but they dont even have the brains of monkeys, thats part of why their economy is the way it is...imagine this, a real madrid fan made snide/racist remarks about Portugese people, guess who was her house guest that day...Cristiano Ronaldo, yep true story, she apparently could not fathom that Ronaldo was portugese, because he's such a great footballer. in otherwords cos he's great he cant really be portugese...racist morons

And as far as I'm concerned..there's nothing like a Diaspora slave..this were people that were captured through war and kinapping and then turned into slaves..they took some of our most powerful men..u seen how huge the Americans and Jamaicans are!!..
