40-foot container crushes car on Anthony bridge; kills three

This is my biggest fear, so I never drive close to a trailer. They are so reckless and their vehicles badly maintained.

The man you see in the photo above, plus two others in a Toyota Avalon car with registration number SQ 32 AAA, were killed around 7pm on Friday August 3rd on the Anthony Bridge, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, after a truck hauling a 40-foot container suddenly slipped off the flat-bed and fell on their car

The driver of the Toyota and another man in the car died instantly, but not the one in the photo. He called for help for over an hour but the people around had no means to lift the container off the car. Even LASEMA couldn't help because the container was too heavy. The man eventually died.

Finally, four hours after the accident, a crane was brought to lift the container off the mangled car. The bodies of the three men were taken to Gbagada General Hospital.

  12. I never drive close to those haulers too. Most times I try as much as I can to overtake them when the coast is clear...Not only are their vehicles poorly maintained, the drivers are shockingly reckless & wicked - always trying to bully the smaller cars off the road. I guess the most important part of the newly signed lagos traffic law is the time constraint imposed on them - To operate only at night - so they can have the road to themselves & ease up on daytime traffic.

On the other hand, I wonder when these guys will improve on their response to emergencies like this. Its absolutely ridiculous that at this time & age, we still cannot respond speedily & effectively to emergencies (fire, accidents etc) & with the right equipment too. What a shame this is; We really have a long way to go here. #SadMuch

  20. This is so sad. Left without help for over an hour because the infrastructures and necessary equipment and manpower to help them was not in place. Our leaders are more interested in looting rather than doing the right thing. One day we shall face Baba God and IWeb all know where all these thieves will end up because they have too many people's blood on their hands.

  23. As we become more and more aware of these things my question is that what has become of those that have committed such atrocities in the past. The value for human life seems to depreciate by the day in our country. Hw many more innocent lives have to be lost before we do what is right. Nigerians high time we drop all that etnic crap nd restructure our minds for us to really place ourselves where our govt has placed us and challenge the beast. RIP the departed

  30. His family should sue the company that owns the container. Some oil marketers will use bad vehicle and explodes killing people....the family of the parties involved say it is how God wants it instead of fighting to prevent it happening again. The containers should have safety fasteners on the truck....if they kill people, they will get away with it so they can't be bothered doing the right thing.

  37. This is very very disheartening. I am tired of this country and its contents! Yes! Including the people! No safety, No lack of respect for situations.. its sad. This man was calling for help and the fool who took this picture was more interested in snapping a pic than looking for a way to help abi? What if it were his father in this situation? He would prefer snapping a picture than trying his best to save him? I mean the man was alive for hours and all people could do was stand around and take pictures! May God punish all of you involved in this dastardly act! Its not fair! Imagine if he has a child in school or a relative abroad who stumbles across this picture on the net? Youy guys have no human sympathy at all and y'all need to stop this stupid habit.
The idiotic company or business man who owns the trailer and his employees - May God punish all of you for this! What would it cost you to observe simple safety precautions and do the right thing?! What is wrong with us Nigerians! I am honestly tired of all this. If it is not Boko haram today, it is Kidnappers tomorrow, or plane crash yesterday or boat sinking .. and the idiots leading us are getting richer and riccher!
I have honestly given up on Nigeria. Im on my way out of here. God is definately punishing this country for a reason! SMDH!

  40. God have mercy. This is becoming one too many. The same thing happened to my husband last week and it was just God that saved him. He was driving out of the car park and only got delayed when he was waiting to pick someone. in a split second, a trailer carrying container had overturned and the container fell exactly at the exit he was driving towards. This happened at VI. i shiver anytime i remeber and even imagine what could have happened. Those trailers need to secure the containers before moving.
God will continue to watch over us and protect us

  44. I always get wary being near such vehicles too. It takes a single second for this nonsense. Same happened arnd ikeja on the way to d airport some years back. A girl had just arrived naija, and was looking for taxi while calling her pple to tell dem she has arrived, and d container fell on her and some traders. Naija leaders have no value for life at all.

  45. This is soooo sad!If these trucks cant be maintained, then they should only be allowed to travel at night when the city is sleeping. This is so uncalled for.

  46. Kai this is touching, especially 4 the 3rd man.i think am beginning to like the ideas of trailers and long vehicles not to move btw 6 am and 10 pm.LS government pls let it start 2day

  47. I still dont get why these containers are not secured onto the flat beds? lets use common sense, this is a continous issue and the Lagos state govt didnt deem it fit to include such in the new traffic rules instead they are more bothered about eating and drinking????? Gosh this country is sick!!!

  50. oh my!! dis is sad. may their souls RIP. which way Nigeria? for how will there continue to be unnecessary deaths? God knows how i hate going near trucks. som of the illiterate drivers just intimidate other road usees with their loud horn. now i see reasons to support Dangote for wanting graduate drivers. atleast graduates are exposed enough to apply caution unlike some illiterate truck drivers. so so sad.RIP n my condolence to their families.

  53. Why would you put the picture online when the family are grieving, i find it very insensitive and infact uncaring of you. It must have been the most agonising one hour of the man's life and now his children have to see it plastered all over your blog.
    Try and be sensitive ..

  54. I was on the road that night when it happened. Lagosians and officials tried rescuing them, all to no avail. Only a crane could lift such container and the traffic was so bad that getting a crane there was difficult. May their souls rest in peace@frau

  56. Hmmmmmn. Mchwew. Trailers dat their containers are not fixed to d truck should not be allowed on Nigeria roads. In fact they should be arrested when found. It is really risky. Soometimes dis containers just shake as dey drive.
