21 year old Nigerian footballer slumps and dies while playing

21 year old Nigerian born Romania-based footballer, Henry Chinonso Ihelewere, slumped and died yesterday while playing a friendly for his Romania team.

Henry collapsed with no-one around him just 15 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Doctors said he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing.

Henry started playing with El Kanemi Juniors of Jos before he left for Romania. Dying of heart attack at 21? God help us!

  12. I don't know why more soccer players aren't paying attention to stories like this! You need to do a THOROUGH physical exam! There are tests in modern medicine to determine whether or not a person's body can handle intense, prolonged physical activity.

With all the money he was many, Ihelewere could have added more years to his life by determining, medically, if his body can handle playing professional soccer.

  16. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Most common cause of death in young athletes and most common presentation is sudden death during exertion. not something usually screened for.

  26. Incidences involving heart related problems on the football pitch have become more frequent recently. Muamba was lucky to come out alive. Puerta of Sevilla FC wasn't so lucky. More precautions should be taken to prevent future occurrences. This is a real cause for alarm.

  46. What a sad story. RIP Nwannem!

He probably had syncopal episodes prior to this, but brushed it off an exertion and fatigue. Please parents do like they do abroad, before your kids play a sport in schl, have them do annual sports physical. Its a requirement in Yankee schools.
Def a clear case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, his fam members should go for a complete physical too, its genetic.

A soccer player Dying young at 21 from a heart attack has nothing to do with living healthy, and there was nothing he could have done except known he had the underlying condition. He either took drugs, or had an undetected cardiac condition like an arrhythmia, long QT syndrome, or HOCM. Importance of doing full physical including an EKG prior to involvement in sports.

  48. His sEemed condition -hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is commoner in young athletes, most times the 1st sign dat something is ever wrong is -sudden death.

    ReplyDelete
  49. most likely hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and unlike wat some av said about thorough physical, it might not be evident cos the person will be at rest.
Sudden death is most common presenting symptom unfortunately.
But its genetic so now they know to check his kids.

    RIP!!!!
