Nigerian Senate President Demands Clampdown on Social Media

Senate President, Senator David Mark, Thursday, called for a check on the menace of the social media on the Nigerian society, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders.

Mark said the need to check the social media became necessary, as they do not have the avenue for retraction of whatever they had done. (Vanguard)

If there's any menace to be stopped, it's the hopeless, shameless and thieving Nigeria politicians. You lot are destroying the country and are the ones shaming Nigeria on a daily basis. NIGERIANS ARE FED UP OF YOU SHAMELESS AND HEARTLESS CREATURES. WE WILL OVERTHROW YOU LOT. Enough is enough. There needs to be a revolution to kick you lot out. THE ARABS THREW OUT THEIR ROTTEN AND CORRUPT LEADERS OUT OF OFFICE. Africa and especially NIGERIA WILL RISE UP AND OVERTHROW ITS THIEVING POLITICIANS. Free speech must be respected and if anyone of you morons in government in anyway, shape or form suppress or abridge the social media freedom of Nigerians, I promise you, it will spectacularly blow up in your faces. You lot, especially PDP politicians are the menace. James Ibori was jailed and by the Grace of God, each one of you will be jailed, even if means a return to military dictatorship, then so be it. 108. Dear God, what's happening to this country? Everything is just in a terrible state, bribery and corruption, killing, prostitution, money ritual, and now we can't even talk about it? This is outrageous. Mr David Mark, I hope and sincerely pray that you and your colleagues will suffer for putting Nigerian through this misery. You all shall see the wrath of God soon; and I mean very soon. Goldelina

  111. Was it not the same person who said telephone is not for poor people which he later denied.
I am sure one day in the future he will surely deny this recent stupid statement. How did this individual get to be the senate president? No wonder nothing works in Nigeria.

  112. Now we Know the enemies. They have made no tangible impact in the lives of young people except looting the treasury. Road are bad, they dont care, People die because of their failures to do the right, it does not bug them, they sit in the hallowed chambers sharing loots from the pains of the people. the only means of airing our opinion. they want it shut. Habbah Jammah!
Men of many parts, You would expect some of these men to keep quiet since they had a terrible yesterday on the minds of the People, especially the poor who have been at the receiving end of many unfavorable policies in a country where leadership problem is like a curse, for those who remembered that "ordinary" Major in the Army, who headed a committee that dispossessed the people of their hard earned properties, branding them "abandoned properties" in their own country. The same man was notable as Minister of Communications and decreed that "telephone is not for the poor". Now, if, he is saddened and pained that the same people he denied the use of telephone can now communicate via social media. Do we still need these men to lord it over us? One big question for the Election of 2015 if it ever comes, Hoping it does faster

If leaders behave well, there will be no need to fear social media. Without amnesia, it was not in history gone by, a President used facebook to woo his People even claiming that he introduced Facebook, he later became wearied and complained about the barrage of criticism and consequently opted out. The Twitter, Facebook and all has become a Powerful tool and I heard according to Vanguard that the SENATE President, Senator David Mark, Yesterday, called for a check on the menace of the social media on the Nigerian society, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders. Whao! You mean Like Farouk Lawan? Or …..

Mark said the need to check the social media became necessary, as they do not have the avenue for retraction of whatever they had done. I hope the Party is not afraid of her eventual fall?

Senator Mark, spoke in Umuahia, Abia State, The Senate President cited as examples varied figures usually quoted by various media in times of tragedies, saying that the figures were always inconsistent.

Describing the media as one of the stabilizing factors in the scheme of things, Mark cautioned that “we need to change our attitude on how we report things about our country, and we should emulate the foreign reporters, who never report negative things about their countries.” Seriously? even world leaders like obama,Berlusconi and co. Get lambasted and lampooned on the social media's
Recently the light of social media has been beamed on men called Rouges in Senate, and business men, who control the economy and scatter it, control the resources and embezzle it and now I guess they want to control the voices so then can silence it. May God Save Nigeria from the Back-bench with such men

  113. Thank God for the freedom of expression we enjoy today via social media. However, it is necessary to mention that some nigerians that are rejoicing that places like Lagos are now being developed to int'l standard are the same ones littering the environment. How do we support leaders who are clearly building our nation? How many who voice out via social media are doing something to build a better Nigeria? It seems the social medium is just a tool to insult and berate some leader rather than to stimulate other users of social media in nation building.

  116. Fat Cow! If you don't want to be talked about, then do what you are supposed to do. Stop cleaning out the treasury and lining ur already full pockets then claiming we are broke.

You want to become a communist, police state like China yeah? GTFOOHWTBS! Rubbish! *angry face*. Social media is perhaps the only medium where we (especially the youth) can express ourselves freely.

  117. Was it not the same David Mark that made the landmark statement a long time ago that "telephone is not for the poor", when he was Minister of Communication? His recent statement goes to show that a chameleon can never change its spots. Unfortunately for him we are now in a liberalizing world where he can do nothing about what he has threatened to do. It also shows he is not intelligent- saying something he knows he can do pretty nothing about. Even the President of the United States can do nothing about the raging revolutionary effects of the new media that is now pervading the world. But Nigerians must watch - this anti-democrat, non-performing president of the Nigerian senate who goes by the name David Mark, who is inherently corrupt and pedestral may be working hard to become the next president of Nigeria. Nigerians must know this and they should begin to work with the same social media tools he is berating from this day to stop him. He will take us to the military days if we are not vigilant enough to prevent buffons like him from perpetuating themselves in power. Chikena!

  118. What an absolute idiot. But not surprising coming from the same man who said gsm - mobile communications - is not for everyone, basically only the elite and the rich need mobile phones. If it were up to this man, we would still be in the stone ages in Nigeria. Shebi you want to become President Mr Mark, we are waiting for you. Anuofia!

  138. our so called senate president is advocating for a clamp down on social media forgetting that even the president was campaigned for and elected on this platform so much so that the international community once dubbed him THE FACEBOOK PRESIDENT. I marvel at the audacity of these politicians ( the president included) they think we are just sheep following them forgetting that we elected them to represent US. I say we should serve a warning to these men, it is within our constitutional right to recall these men representing our constituency and we'll do just that if they continue to focus on frivolous issues instead of doing what they promised before god and man to do ( serve the people towards improving their standard of living in general). the senate president david mark should know that its only when the fowl farts that it start running saying the ground is chasing it. what has he done now that he is afraid of the social media. i say that if he is doing the good work we expect from him he need not go on the offensive against the nigerian people's right to communicate amongst themselves. i think we should really look into his actvities now to find out what he does not want us to find and if its deserving, recall him as a deterrent to other politician. they should sit up, do their jobs and stop trying to cover pull the wool over our eyes.
