What Peter Okoye told an Encomium magazine reporter:
She has been diabetic for years, and when it started many months back, we got good doctors to treat her in Jos. But when we couldn't get good result, we brought her to Lagos. We took her to St Nicholas Hospital and everybody who went to see her in the hospital cried. She had lost a lot of weight and couldn't recognise us. She called me Jude. I can never forget that day.
She went through a lot and gradually she got stabilized thereafter she was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) and she spent two to three weeks there. So we thought of moving her to South Africa, India or the US for proper check up. We eventually took her to India about four weeks ago and we talked every one hour. The Indian doctors made sure to clean everywhere before the surgery, and the operation was successful. Our sisters who were with her confirmed this to us and we were very happy to hear the good news. She was okay before the eventual death and for a day one of my sisters was unconscious because she couldn't believe it.
We wanted to travel to India the following day she died (Thursday July 12) but we changed our plans. Her body arrived Lagos on Sunday July 15th. No concrete arrangement yet on the burial.
Mrs Josephine Okoye was in her early 60s and was a pastor living in Jos. She's survived by her husband, 7 children, and 4 grandchildren. May her soul continue to rest in perfect peace, amen.
Amen!!! Condolences Peter. Take heart Paul.
ReplyDeleteso sad ..must have been a terrible time.....my condolences to all of you
ReplyDeleteIndians will lie to ur face! They should have moved that woman to the US not India! RIP tho
ReplyDeleteKindly shut up your mouth. I guess nobody dies of Diabetes in the US because the Doctors are God
DeleteWhether they moved her to India or US, when God wants the person no where will save the person. May her soul rest in peace. After all people die in US, UK out of one sickness or the other.
DeleteEyaa. So sad. Rest in peace mama

Deletereally, wat operation did they carry out on diabetic woman?? d diabetes must have been complicated to retinopathy.. i feel bad for them. it can be controlled, by avoiding sugars and be on diet.. taking medications.. even excercise..guess it lead to kidney damage.. i just feel sad that dis can be controlled in naija only if d govt spend more money on the health sector.. rip mrs okoye..
ReplyDeleteBlah blah. You claim say u know the the pathophysiology of diabetes. Retinopathy ni.
DeleteThis is not govt issue my Dear, it is individual matter. I have some relatives in Nigeria that are diabetic they are still waxing strong reason they follow the instruction giving to them, they avoid what they are asked not to eat and they take there drugs as prescribed.
Deleteretinopathy??
DeleteAre u kidding me?
Please stop making ur ignorance popular here, thanx!
Amen.

ReplyDeleteSo sad...may her soul R.I.P
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't understand is that with all the money P-quare have, why did they send their mom to India for treatment??? They could have sent her to UK or America! Even before sending her to India, why did they waste so much time treating her in nigeria?? This is very strange! May her soul rest in perfect peace!
ReplyDeleteStop advertising your ignorance.
DeleteMoreover, Its no longer fashionable to think UK and America have a solution to every problem. Investigate about India's medical successes and stop making generalistic statement
busta forget all the hype.it is not as u imagine.they r just comfortable or wealthy.
DeleteThe money to buy fine clothes and to treat person for real akata no b'd same.think of what doctors earn in jand first
For real? Are u in this world? U dunno Indians are d world leaders in health? Pls upgrade before u make statements like this again#JstAnAdvice#
DeleteI was waiting 4 a nicodemus like u 2 write such a comment...u think its so easy 4 u 2 wakeup one morning n fly a sick person 2 america or uk. Don't u know there are a lot of procedures involved which culd last months...as long as she went 2 st nicholas n nothing much culd b done b4 going india then there was probably nothing that culd hve bn done about it. RIP Ma!
DeleteFirst of all,I wanna say may her soul RIP! Then 2ndly,I'd like to say the fool that was asking why she wasn't taken to UK or US in so #Lame... Abi u don't knw indians are good doctors.. The best for that matter, like some one said,u need to upgrade. Then lastly,u can't fly som1 abroad for treatment until the doctors in ur country tell u they can do nothing about it or u don't see any change in the persons health,so shut the fuck up cos I don't get why u saying u can see somthing fishy. Can't u just Sympathize with then and not say anything annoying?
DeleteMay e RIP. Amen.

ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in peace. My condolence to them it's never easy loosing a parent.
ReplyDeleteAwww so sad, may her gentle soul rest in the bossom of God almighty, it ȋ̝̊̅§ well.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 10:14pm, incase you don't know..India is among the top ranked countries in terms of General medicals, surgery and most health concerns issues. So it's not that they do not have the money to take her to US. It also has to do with proximity, bookings with hospital, urgent medical visas and other reasons.
ReplyDeleteMay she Rest In Perfect peace.
all of you making empty noise on their choice to send their mother to India are just silly. bear in mind that these boys are not doctors and would have relied on advices from doctors. why do we always want to find faults in people's decisions. the woman in question is their mother and you guys cannot tell me you love her more than they do. death is a debt we all owe and if it doesn't happen now, it will happen some day when God appoints. may her soul rest in peace and may God console her family at this difficult time.
ReplyDeleteKai, Its sad, Her soul is resting in peace.
ReplyDeleteMind you almost all the good doctors in UK, US and all these places being mentioned are Indians oh. If you know nothing about India when it comes to healthcare, ngwanu shut it. Besides i'm sure they love their mother more than any of us here and they did what was right. Did Yar'adua go to UK or US? No! The world is bigger than UK and US oh, each country is good at something.UK and US are shit at many things and the other way around.
may her poor soul rest in peace..but india is not the best choice when you have all the resources available to you..even south africa is better...even though many doctors in the us are indians, and asians, they have the best in technology and advanced medicines, at their disposal.....i have lived in the us for almost 20 years, ...and the one thing keeping me here is the level of medical care...the hospitals are like five star hotels...childbirth in America so wonderful!!!...it is outstanding, amazing, and makes me awe struck...beke wu agbara!!!!
ReplyDeletePreach jare! All these fools opening their dirty mouth to defend Indian doctors....like they have used one themselves!!! North America and Europe have the best technology, standards and doctors! Whether you like it or not, ok! I'm saying this from self experience, like the above comment! Even in the post it is mentioned that they had to make sure the place was clean, why??? Is it not a standard routine to maintain a room clean for surgery???? I guess not in India!
DeleteIndians are very good at health care, Check out 80% of Gp's and surgeons in uk are all indians, ask anyone that knows about surgery they would confirm this to you, OBI EMELONYE uk/nigeria film director had his kidney transplant in india successful, so many others ask ckn.
ReplyDeleteeven financial sectors in uk, indians are dominating that, doing very good, one of the best export in world economy .
R.I.P mrs okoye
God be with the okoye's family
all of u making noise india, US, UK, nigeria. no country is the ultimate, only God can help somebody. i have a frnd dat used to have pain in her abdomen every now n den. she lives here in yankee n she went to d doctors several times, dey did scan n didnt find anything. last christmas, she visited nigeria and started having pain again. she went to luth n they found out dat she had ovarian cyst. she did d operation in naija n she's fine now. so all na God no be specialist in america or india matter.
ReplyDeleteThank you jare. May God save us from Nigerians who think nothing good can come out from any country that's not Uk and US
DeleteFools. Indian doctors are amongst the smartest, infact scratch that, they are the smartest in the world. Check most major hospitals and find out the name of the head surgeon or doctor in charge
ReplyDeleteFor the annon at 12:04 pm shut up if u don't know much about what u r commenting on. While, I do not question their taking their mother to Indian ( it is their prerogative and they may have a reason for that), I find it very ridiculous that some are comparing the medical care in India to that of the US. It is like comparing darkness to light. It is not factual for u to say that the US hospitals are filled with Indian doctors. While there are Indian doctors in the US, their number is very very negligeble when compared to the number of American, Jewish and other doctors. And what about medical facilities? Would there be any basis to compare the two countries? I don't think so. The US, bare none, has the best medical care money can buy. The draw back, is that it's very expensive and out of the reach of many.
ReplyDeleteSo, if u have money and u can afford it, better go straight to the US for medical care, don't even give going to India a thought.
Finally a smart comment!!!!! Thanks :)
DeleteYou should shut up because you don't know what you are saying
DeleteI know God's time is the best n may be it was her time to go but for all countries in the world, its India they took their mom. When countries like US,UK Australia and other western countries could have done this better.
ReplyDeleteAnyways may her soul rest in peace
Eventhough what will be will be....
ReplyDeleteIndia shouldnt have been their first choice...They should have taken her to the USA.....
RIP MA....
Amen
ReplyDeletewww.cashnaija.com
may God give u guys d grace to bear dis loss, adieu mama
ReplyDeleteuntil it happens to you, u will never know dt most hospitals in nigeria are dead zones... they probably tot a first class private hospital would save the day....
ReplyDeletehow many more will die due to preventable and curable illness???... RIP ma'am
may ha sour rest in peace¡
ReplyDeleteINDIA na wash. What most people don't know about India is that there are as many bad hospitals in India as there are in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteAlso Indian hospitals are 100% about the money. India is very far from the best.
so painful. my sincere condolences to the entire Okoye fam. as for those questioning their decision to send their mom to india, y'all need to have ur head examine like seriously!!! u think u care about their mom more than them? haven't y'all heard that Indian has one of the best medical systems in the world? and who said if they had taken her to the US or UK that she would hv lived? bottom line is that it was her time and she has gone to be with her maker! so drop ur condolences and move on to the next story and stop making analysis like u r gonna contribute a dime for her burial.
ReplyDeleteThis is extremely sad but may her soul rest in perfect peace. AMEN.

ReplyDeletesad for dem but all you saying unsure why dem no go to the uk or the usa as dem have more equipped hospitals than india so india should not have been the better choice as dey have the money anway

ReplyDeleteANON 10:14....IT IS GOOD TO RESEARCH BEFORE YOU POST...make goggle your best friend ok? it will really really help you...before u make uninformed statements that betray your lack of knowledge...
ReplyDeleteIndia is quietly ruling the world..Health, IT, all sorts...trust me they have better healthcare than the US and UK...
as another person stated, ,most of the top doctors in the UK and US are indians...i know this from experience
What experience? Do u live in India? If not, STFU and craw back to the whole you came from....oloshi!
DeleteMay her soul rest in peace
ReplyDeleteI feel so sorry for them;my condolence to Psquare and the entire Okoye family. To the guy asking why they took her to India for treatment, listen 'India is one of the best countries when it comes to General Medicine and Surgery, and i believe they acted on the advice of the Nigerian doctors. Like one commenter noted 'The world does not revolve around UK and USA'!
ReplyDeleteSo you've been to India abi? Answer me...

ReplyDeleteSo sorry lovely brothers. may her soul rest in peace, dont mind those fools, let them be taking about London and US hosipital.
ReplyDeleteIndia has fantastic doctors, be corrected people. Even US and British citizens go to India on 'medical tourism' because they get better care at cheaper rates. RIP Mrs Okoye :(
ReplyDeleteThe US and British citizens that go to India for treatment are born in India....just my 2 cents. You are welcome.
DeleteMay her soul rest in peace, and if its true that someone might have probably used her soul for Illuminati sacrifice...may they never rest!!!
ReplyDeleteJuly 18, 2012 12:31 PM nah true you talk jare
ReplyDeleteJuly 18, 2012 12:31 PM you must be stupid seriously someone died and you are here making a stupid joke
ReplyDeleteNa wah for you people. India, US, UK,Nigeria, Congo, Biafra! The woman could only have been in one hospital at a time. She could not have been in the US and India at the same time. Bottom line, the children wanted the best for her and they flew her to where they thought she could get best care. Why are you drinking panadal for another man's headache?
ReplyDeleteRIP to Mrs Josephine Okoye... Those saying they should have taken her to the UK, US, Moon, yadayadayada!! Take a min and hush!!
ReplyDeleteWith d story above, I am sure she was treated well. May be the stage of d diabetes was advanced and nothing could be done..
My mum has a case of diabetes & ulcer but we manage it well!!! It means we have to cook seperate meals, she avoids carbs like a plague.. Instead of pounded yam she eats wheat and plantain amala. If she must eat rice, there must be bean or vegetables soup at least..
Some of the food we eat in Nigeria doesn't help matters. Me for instance, I knw my grandma had diabetes b4 she died, my mum has too so i don't eat sugar. I stop eating sugar actively (lol) since i was a kid. If there's no natural honey (nt the fake one oo) I take lipton, milo, ovaltine, and cereal, oat porridge without sugar. It actually tastes better! :) Beans and other proteins is my best friend :) .... I have started eating healthy from my early years & I am in my early 20s.
We can't predict our health but we can help ourselves..
Psquare take heart!!
pple when it comes to general health care and surgery india is one of the best country to go,RIP MRS OKOYE
ReplyDeleteSorry about your lose. Rest in peace good mother. I hope p2 will start their own NGO now that they've lost their mum to this sickness. They are the only artistes I know who doesn't give but show off their wealth. Oh + omawunmi. Saw her singing for Mosquitos after collecting money of course. It's not always about making money,so learn to give back. Not ft on songs cos u will benefit.do some CHARITY.
ReplyDeleteGOd! i find it amazing, not amusing, the way nigerians fight over other pple's issues. just to post your comment and you are all fighting yourselves.. yeah, well said, with all the money P-Square had, they choose to do this or that, you wey luv their mama pass them why you no save the woman! smt! it's alwys those whose parents are alive and have never buried one that have the most opinions in such cases, mscheew!
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in peace. Much love and God bless
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in peace with d lord. AmeN. Psaquare take heart, she is resting with d lord almighty
ReplyDeleteChai!! God will grant her a peaceful rest..till we meet her again in heaven. Now dat money has come..chai! it is well PSQUARE and FAmily! God will grant U all the strength to bear this great loss!
ReplyDeleteAm close 2 tears at d knowledge of her n recognisin her kids b4 her death, bt wot consoles me is dat she ws a pastor, God pls accept her soul. N grant d family n us she left behind d fortitude 2 bear her loose. RIP MRS JOSEPHINE IBEJI OKOYE.
ReplyDeleteMay her soul Rest in Peace,Amen.
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in peace, she is in a better place.India was a perfect choice,i reside in d states,i know lots of friends who goes to india for health care, this includes ma parent inlaw.
ReplyDeleteMay her soul rest in the Lord.Thats the most important thing not the hospital she went to,she could have been healed in Jos if her maker wanted.
ReplyDeleteThe only sensible comment out of all the comments made here. Thanks! Rip mama! May ur soul rest in the bosom of the Lord!
DeleteYou fools comparing India to UK or US, just go and do your research well before you come here to say nonsense. India medical hospitals are one of the best in the world beating UK and US by far. Besides most of the doctors you see in UK or US are typically indians.
ReplyDeleteI believe she died of pancreatic cancer because diabetes is a major symptom. Nigerian doctors are too dumb to carry out much investigations and they probably did not know before they carried her to india as this disease cant be easily diagnosed. also severe loss of weight is a major symptoms.
People need to takecare of themselves well, do proper check up regularly and please if your condition is getting any worse and u have the means to afford being flown to india or any other better country's medical hospitals, do it asap. HEALTH IS WEALTH!!!
