Breaking news: FG withdraws operating license of Dana Airlines

The Federal Government this afternoon withdrew the operating license of Dana Airlines following the crash that left over 160 dead two days ago. Good one, FG! Now, let them start making some arrests. You don't play with people's lives!

  1. Linda there are rumours going round that the Dana aircraft couldn't land because the airspace was shut off to allow the first lady to land in Lagos. Please confirm.

  5. Linda it wasn't even the fault of dana although they are extremely dangerous. The crash would have been avoided if the first lady didn't hold them stranded. But I guess this was a way to expose dana airlines and their faulty planes, however the fact still stands that it was dame patience's fault ! #gbam

  6. there is a rumour circulating that a compensation of $100,000 (#16 mil) wld be paid to each family. if this is true, why didn't the buy a new plane if dey cld pay such compensation. my cousin philip chukwuebuka was involved, may his young soul RIP.

  10. Linda hav u hrd dat d crash might hav been averted if d plane hadn't bin delayed frm landing by presidential protocol. Madam first lady was attending a baby shower at oriental hotel in lagos dat day and d airspcae was blocked for 2 hours so d presidential jet cud land. D news was on "kilonsparkles blog"

  14. Linda, withdrawal of their operating license means nothing to dem cos these Indians are dubious and as wise as serpents...they'll probably give d airline a new name, do all d necessary fake registrations and bribingsss and booooooom....we have a new airline in Naija!!!
    May God help us...

  15. A Step in the right direction but they should check other operators too we should not just focus on Dana o we need a total overhaul to avert another disaster please...

  18. Good..but this must be followed up with criminal charges. The souls of the departed must not be in vain..and lessons learned from this accident must be not be obliterated.

Dana management, NCAA officials and associated operators in the commercial aviation industry must be charged with criminal negligence and obtuse complicity.

Nigeria and Nigerians must stand up (for their basic rights) or stand down from the face of the earth!

  26. funny how most pple talk so much junk when they really dont know much about the inner workings of an airline.
alot goes into gettin a plane up in the air.the plane going down might not be a function of neglect.
No pilot in his right mind would fly a faulty plane.
Do you know how much authority a pilot has over his airplane? if he says hes not flying thts it. no management can make him
it then stands to reason that the plane was certified green(ok) before he took off.
remember that flight was probably not the only flight the plane operated that day.
It had probably done the lagos abuja thing almost 4 times that day. and i can tell you it was probably the same pilot.
Bottom-line is no point laying blame, at least not right now.
Even your newly serviced car can develop brake failure. Does it mean you r stupid or have no regard for your life by driving it.
so your mechanic tells you i have fixed your brakes do you then look inside the engine to see if the brakes really been fixed?
I just wish pple would take a chill pill and see how it all plays out
Agreed Naijas maintenance culture sucks but seriously lets take a deep breath and get a full picture of what happened. #Darrisall

  28. Not just arrests. This is a positive step but it took the lives of 150 pple to make this step. Moving forward now, let them start investigating other aircraft. All the attention shouldnt just be on Dana. If we want to avoid this sort of unfortunate incident, the appropriate regulatory agency needs to start putting strcit measures to operate an aircraft in our nation......May the souls of the departed continue to rest in peace......

  29. Not good enough, shut down Dana motors, Aquadana and arrest and jail the bloody indians. Bastards

  30. Mschewwwwwwwwwww.As if that will do anything,we need laws that must be followed in this country. The Aviation industry needs someone like Lamido Sanusi to shake it and put the necessary rules and regulations in place that stupid aviation minister does not know jack.Aw can an airline be given operating license with just 5 old planes to operate anyway? I weep fo my country oooooo

  34. Good one? withdraw licence before investigations?

If it is the right thing, I can tell u authoritatively that EVERY airliner should have their licences withdrawn!!!

The ministry of Aviation knows why this happened! They do not do their jobs. Air crafts are not investigated before OK-TO-FLY. The withdraw licence to show they are working meanwhile Stella the minister keeps her job after shedding a few tears on TV.

The NCAA official who OKed the aircraft from Uyo yo ABJ to LOS keeps his job, other airlines are still OKed by the same 'killers' to carry Nigerians? The management of Dana and engineers are left and we all seat down and praise Jungle Justice??

Over 150 Nigerians dead and Stella is still the minister???

We are NOT ready in Nigeria!

  49. and they had better start probing AIR NIGERIA, whether the ex-finance director is negative towards Mr jimoh ibrahim or not....this shouldn't and mustn't happen again. by the special grace of God, if only human beings adhere to safety measures.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It's a good thing to do FG but this should have been done long before now if the right checks where been carried out by the aviation team. There's nothing that can be done that would restore the lives of the departed. However, I kindly request that you don't stop with Dana Air. Check the other airlines. Remember 2005, if this check was done with all airlines what happened with Belview in October wouldn't have repeated itself with Sosoliso in December. Please do a good and complete work and do it fast. Thank you kindly

    ReplyDelete
  51. Safety Standards demands that before a plane is allowed to fly, it must be certified fit to fly by regulatory bodies. NCAA is one of such here in Nigeria. So withdrawing the license of Dana Air is good, but the government have to do better by probing NCAA for certifying a plane that had been giving mechanical warnings(developing faults) in May, 2012, fit to fly. So those heads in NCAA and FAAN, that have been collecting bribe and allowing these buckets of death to fly, should roll. These 153 innocent persons must not die in vain. There must be a revolution and a payback to all who has joined Dana Air management in perpetrating this evil. (Everyday na for the theif, one day na for the owner). The time has come for them all to pay back. I repeat, these people must not die in vain.

What about the other airlines? from what we read they all should be banned from flying anybody until all the safety regulations for airline operation has been observed.

  59. Good to withdrawn their license but this can not wake those that have gone. The minister for aviation should also be charge to court. As her job there must be a routine check of all our planes to know their status. May God forgive those that have gone.

What about ensuring there are standard checks!! I weep for my country !!!! I am really upset and irritated! I personally do not known anyone on that flight but i feel the pain of those mourning their family and loved ones. This is absolutely unfair! The management of DANA air should be sued for mass murder and negligence !! becasuse that plane gave signs but they ignored the signs.I am utterly devastated!!

  81. You know what's funny? It's when people applaud dictatorial moves like this because it happens to appeal to your current anger. How does withdrawing the operating license of the airline solve the systemic problem in our aviation industry? You think because they yanked Dana Airlines' license, other airlines will shape up? If they really want to save lives, order a mandatory mechanical review of all domestic fleet.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Which License are you withdrawing? They have already beaten the Government to it when they announced since yesterday that they are suspending their operations in honour of the victims. People in government should decide what they want to do. If they want to be behaving like businessmen, they should let us know

    ReplyDelete
  83. Is there any way of getting confirmation about the news I just got?that the Dana plane was distressed for a while but could not make an emergency landing because the airspace was closed for 2 hours for - the Presidential Jet carrying Dame Patience Good luck Jonathan.
Private jet owners who had to hover in the air same time leaked this. This was apparently the reason local news didn't report the crash for so long till CNN and foreign news stations started reporting it.Local news was “blacked out” trying to kill the story of the airspace being closed while a distressed plane couldn't land.
It would be shocking if so.Though there was engine failure there was still time for the plane to have landed apparently.
You do know anyway that the airspace is closed for up to 2hours each time the Presidential Jet needs to go into the air 2hours for any 15 minutes take off or landing!
And this jet is used by President,VP, President's wife and if I recall David Mark.
It's almost a daily occurrence accodind 2 a dana staff..

  91. not only to withdraw. Federal government should burn the license and that of Jimoh Ibrahim's Air Nigeria and all others who are culpable in rendering shoddy services to Nigerians. Federal government should bring back Richard Brandson's Virgin Airline. The guy was good. They used bad belle to send the guy away cos he wasnt playing ball. See how many people's blood had to be shed for their ineffectiveness. This is so so incomprehensible.

  92. Thank God! FG don start to dey get sense.

    ReplyDelete
  93. That should have been done 24hrs after the crash. Now the FG ought to fly in aviation experts from the UK and the USA to carry out a mechanical audit on all privately owned commercial aircrafts.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Arrest Who??? all these for show actions. There must first be investigations to determine the cause of the accident. Linda, If you have to disseminate information, you must also learn to be objective. What if it is found out that the plane didn't have enough fuel to get back to Lagos? What if it was Pilot error? Check the statistics, over 50% of air crashes are due to pilot error. Lets not rush to judgement. Lets us learn to wait for the outcome of the investigations. The NTSB is involved because its a US made plane so nothing will be swept under the rug.

  98. Air travel is still the safest means of transportation. You are more likely to die in a domestic accident than in a plane crash. How many times do we scream for the head of the Minister of Works or the operators of Road transport companies when there is a ghastly motor accident? How many Children are rendered fatherless or motherless due to the negligence of the transport companies? We need a total system overhaul. And can the media also shine the spotlight on Road accidents like you do when a plane crashes. Abi those people are not human beings? Can there be a law that institutes heavy compensation for victims of road accident?? Our people are killing our people and all we want to do is rush to act like we care. #justsaying

  104. I'ld like to say kudos to Mr. President for this move. However, I read this news and cringe with fear for the thought that the owner of this airlines will again find loophole in our laws to revoke this decision in the court of law. The skeptic side of me screams... there is no limit to devious scheming of greedy men. Consequently, I believe there is still need for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and offenders be adequately punished. I for one wouldn't mind a charge of mass murder or treason for those found guilty. I wouldn't mind if there punishment is death by hanging or firing squad. Anyone who will value percunariy rewards above their fellow human's life should be treated as a common criminal, irrespective of their wealth or status.
P.S: my condolences goes to the family of those who's loved ones died in this tragic accident

  105. Read: "On hearing about the plane crash, I decided to board a cross country bus back 2lagos,after all passengers were boarded, a customer asked the driver to put on the ac,the drivers' response was "its not working",everyone on board took it as fate including I, saying to myself " just get me to lagos ac or not" but the dissatisfied customer did not however stop,he called the customer care number on his ticket,& insisted that the reason he travels cross country is because of their services, and asked why this was changing,to my greatest surprise, the bus was changed and an air conditioned bus was provided, that's when it struck me.
shame on the person that sent a broadcast saying he had flown in the said aircraft before, and witnessed the problems. why did he not send out a broadcast then and perhaps his complains might have reached the aviation minister, shame on the engineers that are just telling us now that the plane was 22yrs old and should have never hit airspace, shame on everyone sending silly broadcast msgs saying ur picture or mine would never be used as a dp with Rip next to it, cos that's all we are content with, once we, our family and our friends are safe we keep on striving powerlessly in this country that have shattered our dreams & hopes,I don't plan to live 4ever & I consider it a privilege to be on a lot of peoples DP when my time comes, it would simply mean I stood for something, Worse of all shame on all those who signed a condolence broadcast just to be associated with the stars who signed before them, I really don't understand how that would change anything, its not the country or our leaders that is the problem, it is us, we are killing ourselves,if we do not reject this our submissive way of living we would continue to die in our thousands,I am not pointing fingers at anyone, we are all guilty, I am just saying it is time we stand up and make a change or we'll keep dying.

  107. Is it true that the Dana plane was distressed for a while but could not make an emergency landing because the airspace was closed for 2 hours for the Presidential Jet carrying Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan.
Private jet owners who had to hover in the air same time leaked this. This was apparently the reason local news didn’t report the crash for so long till CNN and foreign news stations started reporting it.
Local news was ‘blacked out’ trying to kill the story of the airspace being closed while a distressed plane couldn’t land.
It would be shocking if so. Though there was engine failure there was still time for the plane to have landed apparently.
You do know anyway that the airspace is closed for up to 2hours each time the Presidential Jet needs to go into the air? 2 hours for a 15minute take off or landing!
And this jet is used by President, VP, President’s wife and if I recall David Mark.
It’s almost a daily occurrence I’ve been told by airline staff when it caught me out on a trip
The truth remains that the President’s wife was actually in Lagos to attend the christening of their personal assistant’s child at the Oriental hotel.. Lekki. Anyone living on the Lekki axis saw first hand the horrendous traffic caused by the president’s wife’s visit..and confirmed reports from airport staff who volunteered information, collaborated this fact, that the Lagos airport was actually shut for 2 hours, about the same time the ill fated Dana Plane crashed. This also strongly explains the reason why Aero contractor airplane could not depart Abuja for Lagos at 3:40pm because of the closure of the Lagos airport. This is criminal and one can only imagine the deep sorrow ad-in-finitum (without limit) that the families of these unfortunate Nigerians and other nationals are currently plagued into. Grief that is so thick in the air, that one can cut through with a knife…rooted soul searching. Yes we have to and yes we can; beginning from our immediate homes and While we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed, we need as a nation to thoroughly do some deep ommunities.. with time this will snowball into our National consciousness. For how long are we going to sacrifice the lives of our dear brothers and sisters and by extension mortgage the future of their/our children, just for the comfort of our leaders? For a 15 minutes ritual of plane take-off, an airport was shut for 2 hours because our “DEAR FIRST LADY” was scheduled to return to Abuja.. OH merciful God, help Nigeria in Distress!”

  113. How about making sure that planes older than 5yrs do not fly our airspaces? I mean if developed countries are using planes 10yrs and older does not mean we should copy them. They have effective emergency rescue systems, we don't. So in the absence of emergency systems in Nigeria, why don't we just fly new planes? Or is this impossible to achieve?

  118. Life is short and everybody's time will come. The occurence serves as a lesson to us all to live dedicated lives to our God. Our system reeks of corruption in EVERY sector! Since we wait for the English courts to grant us justice by bringind those complicit to book we might as well run to them once again because in the end the episode will be swept under the carpet just like others before it. We say a requiem for their souls while we wait for the cliche "THE PERPETRATORS SHALL BE BROUGHT TO BOOK" from our bleeders....oh sorry I meant to say leaders!???

  123. This doesn't change much. People are still missing the point, yes the sector is in decay but withdrawing the operating license of Dana (who presumably was the best airline out of all the local airlines) doesnt bring back the dead nor solve the decay in the system where by people are more bother about the security of their jobs than the security of their lives. The fact is this, after that plane crash landed, it dint burst into flame for 20 mins, NO RESCUE PARTY!!! what is the FG doing about that. Yet their were crowds around the plane, most of them helpless shouting eyahhh, yepa and all sorts. Is the FG going to looking to creating an effective crisis management team? Yes you can say they are taking the step and they have done the right thing but this is just a pinch of salt compared to the more which is yet to be done. It is done! All the sectors in that country are in arrant decay and its just pretty sad.

  125. Did Presidential Jet Conveying Mrs Goodluck Prevent Faulty Dana Plane From Landing Before Crash?
    I just received this -

  128. it shouldnt stop there; what about an immeidate comprehensive investigation into the technical status of the planes of other airlines, their staffing and management crew and level of conformity so far. Followed by immediate withdrawal of license for whoever fails the test to also send a resounding warning to d remaining ones

  129. This means nothing to me. There had better be more coming. I thought that after Sosoliso stopped flying, it signified a change. Nothing happened and the lives of over 60 children among others were snuffed out with only the removal of a minister to show for it. I don't know how many people even commemorate that day. I vaguely recall that there was a protest by mothers in Lagos and the police threw teargas at them. Withdraw, suspend, sack till tomorrow. Until we have answers and we see measures being taken to fix our aviation industry, they have done nothing.

  130. ,,,Pscheeeeew! now that the truth is coming out (holding up the airspace for Dame), they deceive us and make us feel good by quickly withdrawing Dana's licence without any investigation..Is that the issue..Y hold up d airspace, must you ritualize us all to remain in office...You will surely pay for this if it is true, GOD is watching.
