dear Linda, I think you are confusing the figures- those countries on your list might show a higher minimum wage than Nigeria but these very countries are very expensive and therefore, have to have correspondingly higher minimum wage to account for this; as for the N18,000 minimum wage, some state governments have already started implementing it. The problem really is not the removal of the fuel subsidy but CORRUPTION- trust me, if we can recover all that stolen loot, it will be more than enough to go round in Nigeria
was population factored into the mix??? we need to compare apples to apples also these are countries that have systems in place that work...unfortunately we don't have that & we are probably the most corrupt on the list. too many issues. the govt shd have looked at the models implemented in these countries and attempt to duplicate the ones that work. eg. building refineries!!! why can't they at least do ONE thing right! just ONE! if govt is handicapped and incompetent and clueless then why do we have one and why do we have to listen to the rubbish they say when we are not idiots?? #just saying z
The minimum wage is not been paid in virtually all the 36 states as at today and even the 18k take home pay, with this nonsense subsidy will not take you home,it will only take you from your office to the bus stop and there you are stranded so where do you go from there,in essence, even the 18k is not enough for transportation especially now that transportaion fare is doubled, this is minus feeding, savings is a forgone issue, shei na pesron wey never chop wan save,we cant continue this way, life is getting harder
My boyfriend stays in maryland and comes to see me like everyday before,he has refused to come see me since this subsidy wahala started,he claims with the subsidy,we are in a long distant relationship now,no be UK i dey,na dis same lagos. Jonathan please dont mess up my relationship oh
After reading all this stuff, if you're still making subsidy jokes then you're either razz or stupid. Let's not kill ourselves sha! Pray for the protesters and all those fighting the good fight for the right reasons (Banky W should go and sit down jhor). Happy strike to one and all.....Visit my blog @ http://www.urhoborant.blogspot.com/?m=1
Omg this is painful,Heart breaking. Here in korea #200. Min.wage #124,000 Time to act.our four fathers, fathers, we suffered. Let's us avoid our offsprings, children to suffer.
A lot of people have beef for the Federal Government...; but what about the PEOPLE that we call the CABAL? Are they not Nigerians and do they not have a stake in the Oil and Gas Industry? Granted that a lot of shady activity has been going on there BUT how much understanding do the people of Nigeria really have.
Click on the link to check out this article I wrote about the "CABAL" and understanding the price of petrol as Linda has posted.
Here's my summary though:
As for the Federal Government of Nigeria the charge is simple:
Source: PPPRA
What is the nature of revenue management? How competitive is the downstream oil and gas sector? With the abolishment of subsidy regime what happens to all the stakeholders involved? Do their businesses just die off; I presume that there is infrastructure dedicated to the subsidy industry as-is. What safety brackets have been put in place for the subsidy beneficiaries? The public focus is on the G-36 and others listed but what about all the companies along the entire value chain; from NPA to the transporters et al. What is a cabal? Is there really a cabal or are we giving stakeholders a wrong name? What are the economics of 'an aggressive plan to encourage the construction and refurbishment of refineries? There is a lot of work to be done by the private and public sector, in partnership.
Lol. we are quick to copy everything American plus proposed pump price. but quickest to look the other way when the issue is salaries and basics. Whither Nigeria !
You don't understand how this fuel subsidy removal stings until you actually buy fuel. When I drive now, I watch my fuel gauge like some sort of horror movie.
After my calculations, I discovered I'd be spending at least N360,000 on fueling my car alone annually, excluding car maintenance, generator fueling and feeding. In what way does 18k minimum wage provide for any of these.
Linda, the reason why those figures are lower for other OPEC countries is because they have their own refineries. Also teh governements of those countries do not subsidise the fuel. The fuel subsidy removal actually makes economic sense because the monies will be used to rebuild the refineries. Also removal of the subsidy brings about deregulation in the oil sector which will also be beneficial like deregulation in the telecoms secor with new entrants into teh market . that way foreign investors and private sector investors will also invets in teh oil sector and build more refiniries. Thsi will bring about competition and eventually the price of oil will reduce and savings from the removal can be used to benefit the Nation. However this is only an ideal situation i.e. we are assuming Govt will actually use the monies wisely and not squander it. Also even though the subsidy removal is right what Govt shoudl have done is to phase it out to reduce the effect to the general public. Also Govt needs to improve the welfare of the citizens, better healthcare, trasportation etc that way the citizens would not die from the effect of the fuel subsidy removal. Also Govt shoudl show they are sincere by bring to justice all those so called 'kabals' that have been defrauding Nigeria.
Linda did you bother to consider the population of this countries 9ja is over 150million okay. When the govt created new ministries(nigdelta,ICT) u people didn't complain. Do u realise: What it takes to fund a single ministry? 5 new universities? 2 JTF's one in d north one in d 9ja delta? Numerous meaningless agencies(mind u providing employment)? We Nigerian are wasteful and corrupt deceiving ourselves all the time.
Murray bruce put NTA in all d states. how viable are they? Soludo and yaradua spent our foreign reserves on the following: Defending the Naira when oil prices fell! Settling Nigerdelta militant leaders(d figure is a state secret)! Increasing salaries of all federal workers(some directors earn over 1m a month)! Militants receive salary for zero work done! Lecturers wan to work till age 70(bcus of salary not any yeye research)! .....And d waste continues everywhere including senators, security agencies, govt workers, unionists,contractors......
The fact is that we have failed collectively and driven our molue into a ditch. Subsidy or no subsidy is not the issue the issue is let's tell ourselves the truth and stop blames. We are all to blame
minimum wage has not increased o! i strongly advice bombs be thrown in the villa, all where the top people are! till their people are killed they won't be moved! foolish people

The above are further figure that look at the population of all the other opec countries and what is available to each citizen of such country on a daily basis and Nigeria ranked the lowest. S/Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE can give fuel free of charge. Our fight in my opinion should be targetted at getting all the Small Scale Business and transporters get subsidized so that major commodities can stabilize while as private participation is encouraged, the prices for every others will be reduced. The govt can also consider fuel allowance for every worker up to a particular amount to cushion the efect for workers earning 18000 Naira per month.
Even at that, the price will still come down. Nigeria needs to pay off her deficits. Don't compare us with these nations yet. We'll get there. Long live Nigeria! Merinoz
Linda I live in America pls get ur facts right. the cost of fuel price dwn here is $3.45 jst for the regular price o it will b abt 360N in Nigerian amt...
Where r u getting all dis min wage from...you must be smoking weed. if uk's and usa's min wage is wat u quoted and they r in recession that means they r on top of the world but sweet heart exaggerating cause it aint true. smh
well done for this linda. the useless ngozi iwaela and dienzel madueke or whatever they call themselves needs to see this as they the one comparing libya and south africa the other day and i hope they can clearly see that their standard of living is different
any filling station selling fuel above 65 naira should be shut plain and simple
with this chaos, instability, anger, frustration and fear the majority of nigerians live with on a daily basis.... is this how we will get to the promise land of milk and honey???????? where is NIGERIANS AND NIGERIA HEADING TO??
Not this alone, Linda can you imagine senate president salary, N600,000,000.00 per anum resulting to N5,000,000.00 per month. N200,000,000.00 to water the garden of d president and lots more. Nigerians must rise up and fight this until we get total victory.
Wen Okonjo iweala ws asked Y nigeria paid higher for fuel dan oda Opec country her reason was Tax and population, even if USA paid tax with dat Huge minimum wage of over 200K, pple wudnt complain ....oNly Nigeria is diff here, High Price of Petrol yet small Minimum Wage...Are d FG peeps not ever contented with d huge sums dey get(steal) frm d Nations purse.
Linda, i always enjoy your page but on this issue of subsidy, u are inciting people with ur factless posts just to gain cheap affection. The cabal and corrupt leaders are the problem not subsidy removal.....let us start revolution again corruption...for anyone that cares, never wasted my vote yet in this country!
PEOPLE GO BACK AND LISTEN TO PASTOR TUNDE BAKARE'S "IT TAKES IDIOTS TO BE RULED BY FOOLS". My goodness!!!! Such prophetic words. May God Almighty help us.
linda have you heard? a litre of fuel is 250 naira in calabar egbami ooo linda please help in spreading the word ooo this is wickedness ooo of the highest order. the other day someone was talking about competition well shebi we don see am now and i tell you nnpc o shell o total o and the rest would meet to keep the prices up. we are in trouble ooo
see watin ngozi iwae and dienzel madu cause with that their big ugly mouth. jona could not even wait for the reps and senators to debate on subsidy before removing it as if we are under a dictator.
Isn't the current xchange rate for Naira and Dollar N159 --> $1 or thereabouts? Ok, I pay $3 and change for 1 liter of gas. 3 * 159= I'm paying at least N477 per liter in Queens, NY. So from this the Naija cost of fuel per liter doesn't look so bad...abi?
Nigeria WILL be great again, in Jesus Name, Amen. Cheers people, it's not that bad.
linda,i like your tabular breakdown of price per litre and minimum wages of opec/non opec countrys. At a glance its show the position of the naija workers in the commity of nations.I support deregulation but only after repairing old refineries/building new refineries,we have the resources to do this within 3 years.
Iraq and Libya are actually war zones. I imagine that if their situation was more settled, the wage might be higher. Shame on PDP, IMF and all the so-called traditional rulers, religious leaders who choose to keep quiet in the midst of the suffering of God's creatures! Shame on you!
linda your figure for the united states is so wrong, i bought gas today @ d price of $3.64 per liter which is about 547.5 naira, and d minimum wage in america is about $7.25 per hour,so you do the caculation...
I have refrained from commenting on your blog in the past but this time I cannot resist! You have to understand that the ending of the fuel subsidy is just one of the necessities Nigeria must undertake if she is to move forward. Putting a stop to subsidising fuel will create a free market, an environment where private corporations can come in, compete with each other for customers and provide cheaper fuel for Nigerians. No private company will invest in a sector where prices are dictated by the government and not by natural market forces. An end to the fuel subsidy will result in increased activity from the private sector, employment (and therefore increased spending power for those employed, and in turn increased tax revenue for the government) and ultimately cheaper fuel!! Nigerians should look past the short term and see the potentials and future benefits. No sane oil producing nation subsidises it's fuel price...it's ludicrous! The subsidy has to go. WHat you have simply failed to realise (or mention) is that all these other OPEC members have a plethora of private companies competing with each other in the marketing of petroleum refined products...and I would know. I'm an oil trader.
linda can you please get your facts right. The unit pump price of gas in the USA is not $1/NGN157.It is a minimum of $2.75 depending on the state you live.
The campaign against the removal of oil subsidy is politically motivated, misconceived and lamentable.
Through your ill-conceived and misguided protests, you are indirectly, asking for the military to return to power. I hope you all know what happens when the army is in charge. All the Hausa / Fulani people that kept quiet about Boko Haram and their evil acts have all come out of their caves and exploiting the oil subsidy issue to their original intention of sabotaging President Goodluck's administration. It's a witch-hunt. It's not nice. It's not right.
You lot "protesting" are, knowing or unknowingly, doing their dirty work. You are stressing and causing disruption and inflicting damage to the Nigerian economy. Oil subsidy removal is an austerity measure. The world economy is going through upheaval. Nigeria's economy is in similar situation. The federal government of Nigeria have taken a bold and right step by addressing it. We should leave it at that, move on and solve other more pressing issues. Oil subsidy issue is not the biggest issue facing Nigeria.
GEJ is most likely never going to seek re-election, hence, no arse kissing of the electorates. He's toughened up on a lot of issues, including dissent by "protesters" or "Boko Haram." Stop being used. PDP will do what PDP will do. You guilible lot voted them in. It's too late to complain. The current administration is not just President Goodluck Jonathan in power. GEJ is PDP. PDP is GEJ. PDP has too much power. GEJ is just the face of PDP. You lot are no match for PDP.
Even if GEJ is forced out, which ain't going to happen, PDP will, still, install a new person from within their party. They won't install Angel Gabriel. The attitude, agenda or policies of whoever from PDP that takes over from GEJ will still be the same or even worse.
PDP is a covert dictatorship. The only difference between them and a military dictatorship is they don't have tanks. Politicians in power in Nigeria have successively copied the style of previous military administrations of not giving a damn about the masses once they are in power. They keep doing it and Nigerians keep falling for their scam.
The campaign against the removal of oil subsidy was left too late. It should have gathered momentum at least 6 months ago, not now. The government, be they right or wrong, removed oil subsidy because at the time they took their decision, there was no widespread rejection. Y'all are more interested in celebrity gossip, than the decisions your elected leaders are making on your behalf. They (rightly?) probably felt people won't mind. They may reduce the figure by 10% to 25%, but, fuel subsidy is gone forever, or you lot can raise Lazarus from the dead or walk on water through your "protests" (treason?). Your quarter past midnight protest is medicine after death. It's too late. Too late.
In your (suicidal?) protest / demonstration / riot / treason / cruelty to President Goodluck Jonathan, don't die or get injured. Don't fret. It ain't worth it. If you're, still, hell bent on protesting (rioting?), don't protest / riot in Lagos or your State. No one will hear you or see your banner. Abuja is the seat of power. Go #OccupyAbuja. March to Aso Rock, then I know you are serious. The army will be there waiting for your arse with horsewhips. They will also help your wounded arse #OccupyThePrison. Don't say I didn't warn you. To all protesters, if you see a life, grab it.
Abeg let everybody drop this fuel subsidy issue and go home.Just maybe it's the push Nigerians need to get a little more creative. I guess we've practically been supplying subsidized fuel to the whole of west africa.
abeg where r those indian prostitutes that fed sani abacha apple?? i beleive there services may come in handy someday with d way things r playing out!!
Nigeria's NEW NATIONAL PLEDGE!!! I pledge to Nigeria my country, 2b trekking, running and jogging. To bring Jonathan down with all my strength. To check his sanity and oppose his useless subsidy story, and uphold our honor and glory. so help me God!
even if US have higher price of fuel their minimum wage is more than double ours so you can't even compare. Normally, when the government cuts spending they implement other policies to cushion the effect. In naij we have nothing, not even the basic things, and they have not even approved of the 18k minimum wage which still wont make a difference self
in the US the government actually supports them by giving benefits and loans for education, there is electricity, water, good roads and enough security. If we had electricity and water and good roads I don't think we would be protesting this violently
@Kemikal, if you wanted to convince people you should have done it without the insults.
Fuel subsidy has become a way for people to steal from the government. People being oil companies and perhaps govt officials. They inflate the amount of oil they claim to produce in order to get a greater amount of subsidy. And they even go far as to illegally sell those subsidized oil, which is supposed to go to Nigerians, to foreign countries at a higher price. So, they get double the money: money from the Naija government as subsidy and profit from selling oil to foreign nations.
Removing the fuel subsidy, therefore, is a good thing. It will provide the government with more money to spend on the nation's infrastructure.
HOWEVER, this is Nigeria. The government has proven that they cannot manage the money they already have. I am still flabbergasted that the president allotted about 3 million Naira for food for the First Family, and another 5 million Naira for the First Lady's office renovation. The government has disappointed us according to past experience. So, people are enraged that the government is going to be getting another source of income while things are deteriorating for the masses.
The govt wey never manage small money na im we wan give millions abi trillions. mba no.
If the govt had done any one of this or more than one, which would be impressive: -kept the April date for fuel subsidy removal -fixed a refinery and kept ongoing plans to fix the rest -taken a 50% reduction in salary -increased the minimum wage to 50,000 naira (which is still petty change) -fixed federal roads -actually prosecuted a corrupt politician (we have many) -explained the matter of fuel subsidy better without being condescending -treated unemployment Then the people might not be as angry as they are.
I'd like to think this government knows what it's doing by removing this subsidy, that is if it isn't fraudulent & there was subsidy. I know not a lot about the oil industry but I do know that those governing Nigeria do so in the most expensive way to the detriment of Nigeria & Nigerians. My point is simply...I'd like for them to cut costs from their own end. Slash their costs by removing so many unnecessary things, then they can come clean & tell Nigerians this is how much we've sacrificed/saved for the country & the people can listen to them. As at now it is known to everyone that elected public servants governing Nigeria are rather kings/lords & untouchable & insensitive to the plight of common citizens. That's why in January you can impose this form of tax on people who you barely paid salaries that were returning from the expenses of enjoying the yuletide season who didn't plan for this. On the flip side there're evil elements that will now take advantage of this crisis to discredit whatever good initiative this government might have...I think good intention but wrong timing & it only reveals how detached the governing folks are from the governed. Sad init. Dr. W
@kemikal, Its not only the price of fuel that has gone up but also every other thing from food, water and so on, and with majority of Nigerians earning less than 18k.What could be more pressing than this issue please?
I agree with you that Nigeria has to undergo some measures of austerity but the decision of cutting too far and too fast is going to cripple the economy. austerity may create conditions for growth in the long run (and i emphasize "may" because we all know the efficiency of our leaders)but if there's no economy to grow then what is the point? If you look at countries like Peru and Greece when they implemented austerity and then later started promoting growth when the economy collapsed, it did not make any difference because they left it too little too late; now think of what will happen in Nigeria where our leaders are not very educated and corrupt. If the leaders are hell bent on cutting spending then why is GEJ budgeting 1 billion naira for his food and millions of naira for miscellaneous expenditures. In UK here, the coalition government has implemented national austerity but government spending has significantly reduced and they have passed several policies to try and cushion this effect.
The sad thing is that I agree with you.. I'm not sure if this riot is going to be very effective, in fact it may even affect us more. The government is under a bubble and they are not going to be affected by the riots especially when GEJ has budgeted 1b for their food. To be honest, I think the most important thing to do is to pray for God to intervene.
WHo are these olodo rabataz that keep saying gas in the u.s costs $3 per litre. Since when did litre become gallon ... and these are the same pple that will be claiming they went to yankee for college education whereas nothing to show for it. If 1 gallon of pet is $3 and roughly 4 litres make a gallon, then you do the math and tell me if what Linda quoted up there is not true. Talking about "its not that bad" ... how abt u stfu
@ kemikal, i will not condescend so low as to reply you with an epistle.
But i feel the need to do this: On behalf of millions of suffering Nigerians who live on about 42 cents per day; MAY GOD PUNISH YOU AND THE INSENSITIVE NIGERIAN GOVT. ACCORDINGLY.
There is a minimum wage of 18,000. That is even for the employed ones. Wot of those who are not even employed? It simply cannot work. Whoever is advocating for the removal of the subsidy is only doing so because he/she has resources to cope. Please let's be human and considerate enough to fight for the majority(at least 70%) of the population that would suffer this hardship.
it beats me why some people would think that the money realised from the removal of the 'subsidy' would be used to benefit our country. Usai! some of you talk like you don't know the nigerian system, if they were transparent they should have reduced their budget on security, electricity, etc, they prolly have exhausted their means of robbing the public and decided to use the money realised from the removal of the subsidy to further enrich themselves. No be here we dey? ehn let us see if they would use the money to develop the country.
i saw the budget for 2012 and then i wonder where all that money is going to if not the pot bellied politicians pocket....They budget so much on road, electricity, security yet no improvement.
Yankee people (Anon Jan 5 1:20pm and 4:44pm and Margaret Mary) abeg we use gallon in the US and not Liter!!!!! Linda's facts are right!! See my explanation below for more.
1 Gallon = 3.78 L Currently average US Gas Price as of today Jan 5 is
$3.319/ Gallon
So its $3.319 for 3L of fuel.
That's $1.106/L
Today's exchange rate is approx $1=N160
so Average Fuel cost in the US is
N177/L
In Abia, fuel yesterday was N170/L. What this means is that Naija is now paying about what the US pays per Liter. Give the Infrastructure in the US, and opportunity available for gainful employment, this is mad!!!!
Can't believe Dr. Iweala gave a completely wrong data about pump price the way she did. Comparison of international price is usually done in PPP calculations. Income is not the same in all countries and CPI & RPI are completely different.
It was a deliberate attempt to fool Nigerians, she should know better than that.
Firstly, Anonymous Jan 5 4.44pm and 4.22 pm - get your facts right. I also live in the US and fuel is sold by the GALLON. There are 3.7 liters in a gallon so do the math. Kemikal - I have a feeling I know who you are so I wont return the insults you have managed to weave into what would have otherwise been a clear logical and well thought out argument. The fact is the main problem is and will remain CORRUPTION. I still ask - the billions Nigeria has derived from crude export, of what benefit was it to Nigerians? None! So the point is, why should we believe the "savings" from this will be utilized the way its supposed to be ? Or why should we suffer (on top of the level of suffering that's already on ground) because Jonathan and his cronies refuse to attack, sever and destroy the tumor of corruption? Why do the suffering masses keep having to pay for the inefficiencies and lack of commitment of the government? Emotive arguments a lot of us may present yes, but somethings can't be cold and clear cut where so much suffering with no end is served on a platter to you.
I live in California, USA and the price of gas is $3.59 per gallon. A gallon = 3.78litres. And this price is not fixed...It flunctuates on a daily basis based on demand and supply. My issue is not with the removal of the subsidy because if you think of it critically, the country stands to benefit from it in the long run. But again you cannot compare Nigeria with all this developed countries you're listing because things work in those countries, industries dont use fuel to power generators, road networks are fantastic and you will not spend 2 1/2 hours from Ikeja to VI because of traffic. The problem is corruption and this is what the government needs to tackle. The Nigerian government has failed the Nigerian People such that people no longer have trust in the system and as such do not believe that the gains from the subsidy removal will be channelled into making Nigeria a better nation in terms of infrastructure, etc. I pray for Nigeria with the whole of my heart but sincerely we all need to stop being greedy. We need to stop wanting more money just to oppress people around us...mind you, if your neighbour is safe and okay, it affects you because then you do not have to worry about the security of your own life and property. This is what we need to learn! Here is my 2kobo!
@ all the posters in the U.S.A who are saying LINDA's prices are wrong, please remove the log in your eye before removing the splinter in others'.
American gas prices are listed in gallons.
1 gallon = 3.79 liters.
Current day prices in the US may range from $2.75 to $3.50. Please divide that value by 3.79 and you'll realized that the US price is less than $1/liter. In some locations, 75 cents per liter.
To all the olodos above who said Linda calculation for the US is wrong, Linda is actually right. The $3 you pay in the US is per Gallon which translates to 4 liters. So u should all get your calculations right and understand the difference bewteen gallon and litres.
@ anon 9.00pm... you keep comparing Nigeria with USA...How many people really pay their taxes as they earn in Nigeria? There is no free lunch in this world. It goes both ways. The masses should perform their civic duties and our leaders should manage well. Nigerians should work on reducing our population and stop our total dependence on Fosil fuel. We need to develope our agricultural sector, for instance.
All these fake Americans commenting here, gas is $3.25 per GALLON not per LITER!! And if you were truly buying it, you would have known. Idiots!! This is equivalent to what Linda posted. And for those asking for her sources, why not google and present conflicting minimum wages and fuel prices? I guess you lot are just government implants to confuse people. Finally, kemikal, if you see a life, do us a favor and let it go honestly! Anu ofia!!
For those of you that pops up and said I live in America and the price of fuel is $3......you r payin for Per Gallon and not Litre.....so u all go bac and do ur calculation n stop hvin a go at linda
We can't honestly compare d economies of those countries with ours as Nigerians. With d sad state of producing but not refining crude we're no bettet dan the us nd uk with respect to their fuel prices. Again do you really believe that the least paid person earns that much in d US, a largely private sector driven economy. my take is dat d pinch we'd all feel due to d hike in d cost of petrol is one we shud sll be willing to bear nd d only issue we shud contend for, fiercrly if neef be, is d actual implimentation of d 'promises' we all know trust is d bug that had eaten us up so badly over time.
As an ever optimistic Nigerian, I believe this great nation will be great again. In the midst of all this, I can't help but get the feeling that we are on the precipice of something, it could either start to get better or soo much worse. The subsidy removal, was performance was carried out shadily without enough information as usual to the public. Now, I know this is not the best time to see any sort of lining, silver or otherwise, but I hope to be hopeful. It's soo frustrating that the entire cost now has to be carried by the poor masses who are actually now made poorer by this. While GEJ thinks he may be onto something, it's mighty annoying that he cant see that we, who don't have common electricity, which is where most of the petrol money goes, will not get on board with this at all. It makes no sense to us, it is stupid, callous and wicked. even if it makes a little bit of sense, in the economic sense.
THE TRUTH IS THAT THERE IS NO SUBSIDY TO REMOVE. ITS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO MEET THEIR GREEDY NEEDS.THEY HV BN REMOVING SUBSIDY SINCE.THERE IS NO SUBSIDY, THEY R JUST INCREASING FUEL PRICE.
NGOZI IKONJO IWEALA, PLEASE RESIGN NOW AND SAVE US ALL THE TROUBLE, NO INDIVIDUAL IS GREATER THAN NIGERIA. THIS YOUR WORLD BANK AGENDA WILL NOT WORK IS TIME AROUND, ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY. UPTIL THIS MOMENT WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE DEBT WHATEVER U PULL UP DURING THE OBASANJO ERA.IF PAST ADMINISTRATIONS CAN RULE WITHOUT OUTRAGEOUS OIL SUBSIDY REMOVALS, WHY CAN'T HE? THEY STOLE ALL THE MONIES FOR THEIR CAMPAIGNS AND WHATEVER.OIL SUBSIDY REMOVAL WAS NEVER PART OF HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISES, WE WERE PROMISED FRESH AIR BUT ALL WE ARE GETTING NOW IS DRY, DUSTY, CHOKING, IRRITATING AND LIFE SHORTENING HARMATTAN WIND.THIS WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION FASHIONED AGAINST US SHALL NOT PROSPER.
I don't want to believe that people are saying that the removal of fuel subsidy is a good thing n its just a matter of how to properly spend d monry on building our refinaries. Don't get me wrong building our refinaries, dergulating n all dat good stuff is fine. They have to generate the money from cutting down their incredibly big government spending on nonsence like furniture allowance,n d likes n believe me if they do dis d 1.wat ever trillion they r looking for will be generated in less dan 6 months.imagine if all government workers including law makers had to live on 18 thousand naira salary. D government will b able to pay dis salary n have enough leftover to provide basic amenities for us.
Hey man, why you attacking free speech ? Truth hurts? I spoke the truth. You ever attack my comment again, I will put tears in your heart. Who you trying to bully? You're backing against the wrong tree. You're picking on the wrong person. Save your childish and stupid abuse for your illiterate grandparents. I dare you to link your Facebook or Twitter page and see if I won't have you tracked down.
You are the most stupid people commenting on Linda Ikeji's blog. Your comment is a waste of space, stinks, is meaningless and is pointless. Where is your argument? Where? You are too ignorant and too backward and should be imprisoned and flogged until you are civilised. You exposed your bad upbringing. Next time, make your argument without wanking yourself on other peoples' comment. Sodomize your gay arse on a doorknob, headbutt a sharp knife and dougie off a cliff, dumbass.
I usually stay away from Nigerians, even online. The more I interact online with Nigerians, the more I realise far too Nigerian people are deeply ignorant, lack knowledge and have no common sense. Is it their fault? Is it the government's fault? Is it their parent's fault? Is it as a result of their environment / upbringing? Whatever the reason is, it stinks, hurts and I don't want to know. I cry for Nigeria. Nigeria has a long way to go, really.
Someone needs to put this article on CNN or somewhere other world leaders can see it. This is a bis shame N18,000 minimum wage. This salary can barely pay rent and food not to talk of expensive transportation and bills. Very sad for Nigerian government and their ridicculous salaries and expenses. Only God will judge them
@ Security Guard....the US minimum wage at the federal level is $7.25 per hour. Assuming 8 hours of work per day, and 20 working days a month, and an exchange rate of $1to N162, we end up with N187,920, so the figure given in the table isn't far off. Also you have to consider that in a lot of states the minimum wage is even higher than the mandated federal minimum wage. For instance in California it's $8.00 per hour thus the pay there would be N207,360. The only state with a lower minimum wage than the federal is Wyoming (at $5.15. And with all this we are paying a comparable amount for gasoline as people who are making more than 10 times the minimum wage in Nigeria.
Again, fellow bloggers, stop comparing the USA or any country with Nigeria. Each country is unique and its minimum wage matches their cost of living. I cannot have a good living on American minimum wage just as it is hard for someone to make a decent living on Nigeian minimum wage. For example, the cost of one room is not the same in Nigeria and America.
Wherever you are, make the best of it.Do whatsoever, you can as long as it is honest to improve your living. Life is not easy anywhere.
@Kemikal, u are a bastard! How dare u come here and say all dat BS! Am neither of the 2 pple u insulted but u r clearly insane! Liar saying u avoid Nigerians online but u could use profane words all through ur lunatic rantting like a street urchin! Be real gal n stupid fakin ur dumbass like a moron! So obvious u live in a ghetto here in Nigeria comin here to say bla bla bla! Bug off dis Page! It belongs to a proper Nigerian u idiot! Sukka blet!!! Pigay choni blet!!!*dats Russian by d way*....Meggy
Sorry about the mistake, I currently pay $3 and change per gallon NOT Liter, but this is the cheapest it's been in a looong while.
This fuel subsidy removal can actually be a good thing in disguise. The 1st in line of a much needed realignment of government investment. Of course... it's going to take sacrifice on our part.
Methinks this deregulation it should not result in more money entering Govt coffers. Deregulation would mean that oil markerters would now import fuel or refine locally and sellbased on how demand for fuel is with competition forcing prices down ultimately.
To expect a windfall of money which would now be managed by this Kolade group would suggest that this is really TAX ON PETROL not deregulation or subsidy removal. Govt has a right to tax but as the Boston tea party brings to history of democratic governance there should be no taxation without representation of the Nigerian people and the Nigerian people have not been taken on this matter.
Plus imagine the callous way it was carried out to ensure they "hit gold". The fact is they have made their money even if its reversed. Starting on Jan 1st when the majority of Nigerians will need to travel about for one reason or another was very strategic!
@Anonymous. January 7, 2012 12:41 AM. Hey drag queen, your mama, u stupid tramp. I speak fluent bitch, too. How dare u? Ofe akwu agba uka. Do u know who I am? U little rat. U must be crazy, drunk .... drunk .... drunk on cheap Russian vodka or overdosed on viagra. Linda Ikeji's blog is NOT a porno site. Remove your hands from between your legs. Stop wanking your gay self on my comment. You're a pr!ck sucking fat gay prostitute / "asylum seeker" in Russia :) Everyone knows that's what most of u jobless Nigerian men do in Russia & Europe to survive. Tighten your butt muscles when you ride dicks. #GayMenLoveThat. Everybody knows that black people & migrants in Russia are treated like SLAVES and randomly beaten up in broad day light by neo-Nazi Skinheads. Corruption. Poverty. Harsh weather. Extreme, random and violent racist brutality. Third rate education system. What da hell are u doing in Russia? I won't EVEN send a dog on holiday to Russia. The weather is horrible, the economy is shit and hygiene is non-existrnt. It's a filthy, dirty and evil country. How many times have you been physically assaulted in Russia for being black? Racism & racially motivated horrific attacks in Russia against non-whites is widespread and among Europe's highest. Only fools or those who don't have a choice would continue to live in racist Russia. You're in Russia because your parents or you can't afford UK or US, ever. U cannot ever get a one day visa to enter Northern Ireland. As for your arse entering England, forget it. If u had a choice, you'd be elsewhere but Russia. Serves u right, though. You were rude in Russian language -to show off? Impress me? Maybe it'd impress kids in your father's village, but not me, dumbass. Your entire one year income / pocket money / asylum handout (or whatever you fools get) can't even afford any of my shoes, loser. U old dirty pervert in Russia that's wanking himself on my comment & your fellow black people in Russia are suffering:
@Anonymous. January 7, 2012 12:41 AM You're a worthless and irrelevant pile of shit. The Internet is not Nigeria, Cambodia, Iran, China or poverty stricken Russia, crazy asshole. I will tame u & any fool that gangs up with u or targets my comments. Improve your education, learn manners, learn online etiquette, and respect free speech. Most of u are probably three times my age, but I don't care. I make more sense than most of u, combined. The collective IQ of u ignorant fools (chatting shit on subjects & issues u know nothing about) is less than a 3year old's IQ - gibberish, incoherent and stupid. It's annoying. U people brought your bad upbringing & stupidity online. U & other ignorant and uncivilised people like u must retreat back to your caves. The same thing your corrupt & government & public servants do to all of u which u people are not happy with is what some of u do online to one another.Freedom of speech reigns supreme online & must be respected by Nigerians. Stop supressing free speech, stop bullying and STOP ganging up against other people's opinion. Opinions may or may not be right or wrong. Comments on Linda Ikeji's blog are entertainment - we're just having fun, but too many of u take it far too serious. Why? Everyone deserve to be heard. Everyone deserve to make their argument / comment without the fear of being abused, insulted, ganged up on or slaughtered. No one should be bullied, harassed or targeted for expressing their opinion. I am & have always been used to freedom of speech. I am UK born, very educated, British, Nigerian and I'm in London. I also have a very high IQ. Eat your heart out, you damn filthy dog. Freedom of speech is among most treasured freedoms. U attacked me, now, I attack yours => My right to free speech is constitutionally protected. I don't live in a banana republic or mafia run country such as Russia. I'm a billion times better than u & more important than u. Are u crying yet? Read on. My opinion is more important than yours. Although, we're all "equal" before God, not every LIB reader is born equal. You're beneath me, fool. U asked for it & I've rammed it down your throat. I don't give a damn about your feeling. My comments are not for the faint-hearted, sensitive, the mosque or the church. Take your emotions back to Facebook or drink bleach. I don't tolerate bullies or fools. I've tremendously enjoyed putting u cocksucking gay dwarf back into your cave.
@kemikal u should be ashamed of urself...btw what're u doing on this blog. You're one pathetic bastard...I bet u're an ugly, homeless sorry ass loser in life who thinks everyone is like u. I know ur type...go on & jump off a bridge...loser yup I said it
Quick calculation using public data. On a weighted avg basis, other OPEC countries are doing multiple times better than Nigeria based on how oil earnings can be spread across citizens. You would also notice that Iran which has the next highest population of 73mm has the highest fuel price/lt
@Kemikalunatic...This is annonymous 12.41AM, u claim to be all that but u couldn't see the name "Meggy" at the end? Do men bear Meggy? U r so crazy, so uncultured, So mannerless! Wow! All that thesis cos u were insulted in a language u don't understand? OMG! Am a young lady like you BTW, I don't av to blow my trumpet here like a looser! Av been to d U.S, England, about 20 countries in Europe including Russian for holidays so u see? Am not an assylum seeker! *sorry to burst ur damned bubbles* see u making noise on LIB cos ur parents stayed illegally as a 2nd class citizens in the U.K Or u wanna tell me that ur parents are British by birth? Idiotta!!! I really pity ur parents u knw? You are obviously on hard drugs and you need therapy! I can't believe any sane person will go on like that... You really need to jump off a bridge like annon 8th jan, 1.30AM rightly said. FYI, I live here in Nigeria and I spent a lot of money (enough to buy ur British Passprt n ur parents' combined dats if u even live in the U.K legally) learning the different languages I speak! Moron shouting abt Racism in Russia, isn't the same Racism there in d U.K? Do they give blacks jobs like the white? As per the economy, they aint hugely in debts like ur U.K! U really are a big fool, do u knw dat? So ignorant abt ur "U.K" economy! Am expecting ur reply *full of x rated activties which u indulge in*.... Du bitz kraank!!!! *Dats German by d way, expecting an epistle on d German Racism/Economy next..lol....Meggy
"Unintelligent people always look for a scapegoat." - Ernest Bevin.
This quote is about ignorance and stupidity.
Goodluck Jonathan is not the cause of Nigeria's past or present problem. If he never came into office the economy will still be what it is now due to mismanagement by previous administrations. If GEJ never came into office, the majority of you will still live from hand to mouth. Solve your individual problems.
Stop blaming President Goodluck Jonathan for your problems. He is not the cause of your problems.
If you people like, argue and abuse yourselves till the second coming of Christ, it won't change anything. You guys voted him in. There's no point crying now. It's too early. I'm glad all this is happening now so that next time y'all won't get blinded by money and empty promises and vote the wrong people in.
You should be attacking PDP and previous Heads of State, not GEJ. Even GEJ steps down, PDP that deceived all of you will still install a new face from within PDP.
@Annon 9th, 3:20am, you just said Exactly what I was telling evry Nigerian before the last election. As long as PDP is in government, Nigeria will never make a head way cos all they are concerned about is looting, looting, looting and nothing else. If GEJ wants to prove himself to us as being honest, he should cut the salaries and allowances of both the legislatives and executives into half! The extra if kept for 2yrs, will be enough to build 2 new refineries and even fix the existing ones! Let's start from there! As a matter of fact, after this subsidy protest, we the youth of this great country should face the NASS, their salary and allowances is too outrageous!! It MUST be reduced by 50%! How can 24% of a country's budget be used to feed a few?! Thats arrant nonsense!....Meggy
In your Anonymous comment of January 9, 2012 12:11 PM, you finally agreed with me. You are a very pathetic attention seeking little fool. You attacked my previous comments just to get my attention. My arguments are valid and can be substantiated. I made the January 9, 2012 3:20 AM Anonymous comment. It's for poverty stricken losers like you.
The federal government has done the right thing by removing oil subsidy. The government are on the right track. The major problems I foresee are management / implementation and corruption. The problem of corruption is not just to do with public servants or the government, but Nigerians. It's in your psyche to be stupid and irresponsible (to get rich quick, to reap where you did not sow and to corruptly enrich yourself the moment you get the opportunity). Given the chance, over 95% of you will do similar things public servants and politicians are doing - looting the treasury, accepting bribes and awarding government contracts to yourselves, your husbands, wives, children, non-existent children, non-existent contractors, your cats, your dogs, etc. It will take more than 100 years and the combined effort of Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and Jesus Christ to change the thieving mentality of Nigerians.
In my previous comment, I stated that YOU ARE 100% beneath me. It's a FACT. You are a loser and a tramp. You are daft, backward and very poor. You had the temerity to direct your comment at me? You're either suicidal or mad.
I have never in my life felt, cried or complained about price of petrol or price of anything in the UK, US, EU, UAE or anywhere is or going to be expensive. I can afford the things I want. I can afford anything I need.
If you are well to do / rich / come from a wealthy background, then why are you crying over prices of petrol and other things? It is because you are poor, illiterate, clueless, suffering and stupid that is why you are crying over prices. Insulting the government or fretting like a mindless cow ain't going to change anything for you. If you hate your life or situation, change it. You are not a tree. Use your mind. Make more money. Better yourself. God owes you nothing. Jesus Christ owes you nothing. Muhammed owes you nothing. Gautama Buddha owes you nothing. The government owe you nothing. I owe you nothing. No one owes you anything, not even sympathy. It is a spiritual TRUTH and FACT of life. You are responsible for your life. Get that into your head and stop moaning. Shut up and move on. This debate is now closed.
a lot of people say corruption is the major problem they foresee with the fuel subsidy removal....is it? i think that is one of the problems we will face as a nation and generation what about the hike in all the basic necessities we as average Nigerians enjoy what of the average child who for now cannot even attend a good affordable private school or who goes to a public school and gets little or no education to be of use to his generation? what about the father who assuming is getting the minimum wage{18000},will no longer be able to afford his house rents, send his children to school, feed his family and basically hope for a good life for his family. what of all the people who are trying to run a business and are running on generators 24/7? most of this foreign countries Nigeria is being compared to has most of this amenities in place so it can really get easy for us to comfortably give theories on how it will be and how good it is for the people even as we speak, some families do not eat 3 square meal, cannot afford to take their family to the so called free hospitals, gets Little or no education and now you say you want to add hike in even the little they can afford what has been set up for those people? NOTHING That is why we should fight put the necessary infrastructure in place before removal of subsidy MAKE LIFE COMFORTABLE FOR NIGERIANS
@KemiKal, 1st let me pick out the only part of ur annonymous comment which made me wrote mine in affirmative "You guys voted him in. There's no point crying now. It's too early. I'm glad all this is happening now so that next time y'all won't get blinded by money and empty promises and vote the wrong people in." I said and I repeat that Nigeria will NEVER forge ahead as long as PDP is in govt cos PDP is a system on its own with core aims and ambition regardless of how well intentioned anybody is as an individual. Now as per me being underneath u, poor bla bla bla and dats why am crying over the increased fuel price, u just confirmed and agreed with me that you are on cheap ass drugs! Like WTF?! Its a pity that you do not and can not know who I am. So you are telling me that the likes of Comrade Odumakin, Femi Falana, Durutoye Fela and the rest are poor? Cos we were all together at the protest ground at Gani Fawehinmi park yesterday. Am very sure u knw those pple can pay ur life's worth 100times over so by saying that protesting is only meant for the poor and those "beneath" u just says it all my dear, U R DELUDED! U R CRAZY! U R NOT A NIGERIAN! Ask ur mother who ur father is cos no blooded Nigerian will ever talk the way u do even those who av spent all their lives abroad not knowing the way to Africa, its in d genes! U r surely not a Nigerian. This debate is not closed as long as u come back here to display ur lack of sensitivity towards the common man, ur uncultured ways of addressing pple, ur wack and demented style of expression and ur madness! BTW, I can see a tiny part of ur brain cells still works cos u took d initiative by not including ur x rated activities n u didn't go bla bla bla on an economy u knw absolutely nothing about.....Meggy
@Meggy, please I beg u 2 ignore the bastard named KEMIKAL because she Definitely NOT a Nigerian! No 9jan will ever speak of ill of her own in that manner especially when all the arguments are all baseless. Pple like her who make such noise on the internet are actually the ugly, fat, poverty stricken pple who pick up infos on the internet where they spend everyday of their lives. Av not not noticed the things she says are so ghetto?Stupid Kemikal!
@Annon jan 10, 4:58PM, as u can see, I wasn't even the one she insulted initially, in as much as I do know that Kemikal is a loser and an irritant, I will not keep quiet and watch her insult Nigerians the way she does. If she comes back here again and vomit her rubbish, she will surely get a befitting response! What an idiot! Ofcourse everybody knows she's not a Nigerian, she probably doesn't even knw who her father is. Thanks all the same. God bless.....Meggy
Please Meggy, ignore Kemikal and just continue to march at Gani park and we will be there with you. I've been there daily as well. Obviously Kemikal is a WUM and a foolish one at that. Her grammar (assuming she's a female) is fairly attrocious and belies her torturous attempts to trumpet her intellect. I actually agree with some of her points regarding the economics but I fully agree with the previous poster who says she cannot be Nigerian with the invective and vitriol she pours out. In the end, let's have a sane discussion. Nigerians have been gullible in the past and have been too easily misled. The fact that people are questioning the government, its motives and its actions is laudable in itself and I fervently hope this goes beyond just the oil subsidy issue and is translated into all facets of our lives and culminates in the enshrining of a new age of accountability and civil activism. Then, perhaps we may be able to turn our situation around. Bitte Mein Frau! Ozz
even the so called 18,000.00 minimum wage, has it been approved?
ReplyDeletetears from the masses.GOD HELP US!
ReplyDeletedear Linda, I think you are confusing the figures- those countries on your list might show a higher minimum wage than Nigeria but these very countries are very expensive and therefore, have to have correspondingly higher minimum wage to account for this; as for the N18,000 minimum wage, some state governments have already started implementing it. The problem really is not the removal of the fuel subsidy but CORRUPTION- trust me, if we can recover all that stolen loot, it will be more than enough to go round in Nigeria
ReplyDeletewas population factored into the mix??? we need to compare apples to apples also these are countries that have systems in place that work...unfortunately we don't have that & we are probably the most corrupt on the list. too many issues.
ReplyDeletethe govt shd have looked at the models implemented in these countries and attempt to duplicate the ones that work. eg. building refineries!!! why can't they at least do ONE thing right! just ONE! if govt is handicapped and incompetent and clueless then why do we have one and why do we have to listen to the rubbish they say when we are not idiots?? #just saying
z
The minimum wage is not been paid in virtually all the 36 states as at today and even the 18k take home pay, with this nonsense subsidy will not take you home,it will only take you from your office to the bus stop and there you are stranded so where do you go from there,in essence, even the 18k is not enough for transportation especially now that transportaion fare is doubled, this is minus feeding, savings is a forgone issue, shei na pesron wey never chop wan save,we cant continue this way, life is getting harder
ReplyDeleteWhat is good about being Nigerian?
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend stays in maryland and comes to see me like everyday before,he has refused to come see me since this subsidy wahala started,he claims with the subsidy,we are in a long distant relationship now,no be UK i dey,na dis same lagos. Jonathan please dont mess up my relationship oh
ReplyDeleteAfter reading all this stuff, if you're still making subsidy jokes then you're either razz or stupid. Let's not kill ourselves sha! Pray for the protesters and all those fighting the good fight for the right reasons (Banky W should go and sit down jhor). Happy strike to one and all.....Visit my blog @ http://www.urhoborant.blogspot.com/?m=1

ReplyDeletePS - u forgot to state your source...who came of with these figures??? thanks..
ReplyDeletez
This is a clear indication...
ReplyDeleteA lot of people have beef for the Federal Government...; but what about the PEOPLE that we call the CABAL? Are they not Nigerians and do they not have a stake in the Oil and Gas Industry? Granted that a lot of shady activity has been going on there BUT how much understanding do the people of Nigeria really have.
ReplyDeleteClick on the link to check out this article I wrote about the "CABAL" and understanding the price of petrol as Linda has posted.
May God punish all our leaders.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to look at the GDP, GNP, the populations and the inflation rate of those nations.
ReplyDeleteThe mere fact that Venezuela and IRan are on it says it all..
O boy!! Nigerians are really suffering.
ReplyDeleteGood work Linda, keep it up.
ReplyDeleteGod help us, touch our leaders to hv change of mind
ReplyDeleteWho go fight, na you?
ReplyDeletenawa 4 this our so called leaders
ReplyDeleteLol. we are quick to copy everything American plus proposed pump price. but quickest to look the other way when the issue is salaries and basics. Whither Nigeria !
ReplyDeleteIt tire me ooooo, i'm not sure anyone has recieve the 18,000.00 minimum wage till date.
ReplyDeleteSo Iraq wt all dia problems is even better than Nigeria...na wa.
ReplyDeleteI Feel like Committing Suicide jst reading this figures.... I am to agitating to comment any further.
ReplyDeleteYou don't understand how this fuel subsidy removal stings until you actually buy fuel. When I drive now, I watch my fuel gauge like some sort of horror movie.
ReplyDeleteAfter my calculations, I discovered I'd be spending at least N360,000 on fueling my car alone annually, excluding car maintenance, generator fueling and feeding. In what way does 18k minimum wage provide for any of these.
God save our souls in Nigeria!
Correction these are not leaders! They are dictators & we Nigerians will overcome one soon..v soon
ReplyDeleteLinda, the reason why those figures are lower for other OPEC countries is because they have their own refineries.
ReplyDeleteLinda did you bother to consider the population of this countries 9ja is over 150million okay.
ReplyDeleteWhen the govt created new ministries(nigdelta,ICT) u people didn't complain.
Do u realise:
What it takes to fund a single ministry?
5 new universities?
2 JTF's one in d north one in d 9ja delta?
Numerous meaningless agencies(mind u providing employment)?
We Nigerian are wasteful and corrupt deceiving ourselves all the time.
Murray bruce put NTA in all d states. how viable are they?
Soludo and yaradua spent our foreign reserves on the following:
Defending the Naira when oil prices fell!
ReplyDeletei strongly advice bombs be thrown in the villa, all where the top people are! till their people are killed they won't be moved! foolish people

ReplyDeletelinda you failed to tell us which of these countries subsidises fuel. The question remains, does the govt subsidise petrol in these countries or not?
ReplyDeletelinda believe me you are doing a great job with other internet sites as well...........
ReplyDeletebut my question to you is do you thing that any nation can deal with corrupt government without a blood bath?...........
even all of the nation that are war torn live better than nigeria.........guys think...think....
except thereis a continious mass protest and revolution....forget all the write ups....
OUR PRESENT PREDICAMENT IS DUE TO CORRUPTION!
ReplyDeleteLinda, i always enjoy your page but on this issue of subsidy, u are inciting people with ur factless posts just to gain cheap affection. The cabal and corrupt leaders are the problem not subsidy removal.....let us start revolution again corruption...for anyone that cares, never wasted my vote yet in this country!
ReplyDeletePEOPLE GO BACK AND LISTEN TO PASTOR TUNDE BAKARE'S "IT TAKES IDIOTS TO BE RULED BY FOOLS". My goodness!!!! Such prophetic words. May God Almighty help us.

ReplyDeleteNigeria's figures r jst too out of ds world.we aint fooled anymore.9th Jan is the earliest start date
ReplyDeletewhat is the source of this table
ReplyDeleteYes, we Nigerian WILL fight to bring down this corrupt government. Like seriously, for how long will they continue on this path; punishing the masses.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping this protest generates into something bigger; such as asking NASS to reduce their pay, and strengthening our anti-corruption agencies etc.
ReplyDeleteNigeria WILL be great again, in Jesus Name, Amen.
ReplyDeleteIraq and Libya are actually war zones. I imagine that if their situation was more settled, the wage might be higher. Shame on PDP, IMF and all the so-called traditional rulers, religious leaders who choose to keep quiet in the midst of the suffering of God's creatures! Shame on you!
ReplyDeleteThank God,we have Nigerians who can put sentiments aside and reason,Figures dont lie,Same as reality.Good job Linda!!!!
ReplyDeletelinda your figure for the united states is so wrong, i bought gas today @ d price of $3.64 per liter which is about 547.5 naira, and d minimum wage in america is about $7.25 per hour,so you do the caculation...
ReplyDeletethese figures are all wrong! a litre of fuel in US is 528 naira, UK IS 351 naira, venezuela is 108 naira fact not fiction.
ReplyDeleteI have refrained from commenting on your blog in the past but this time I cannot resist!
ReplyDeletedis pple are heartless. the 18k sef dem never pay.
ReplyDeleteThis is daylight robbery on the Nigerian people. God please take control.
ReplyDeleteare the prices from other countries converted naira? pardon my ignorance btw
ReplyDeleteThis is quite saddening. I will write an article on this and post it on my blog.Thank you.
ReplyDeleteNot everyone gets the minimum wage sef, majority get less than 18k
ReplyDeleteNigeria is great country no doubt. I believe in niger,
ReplyDeletelinda can you please get your facts right. The unit pump price of gas in the USA is not $1/NGN157.It is a minimum of $2.75 depending on the state you live.
ReplyDeleteThat's worse, imagine removal of fuel subsidy, and now, they've not even approve the 18,000.00 minimum wages yet, that's really wrong.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe this, FG better do something, and do it fast, Nigeria is turning into a War Zone.
ReplyDeleteWow! This table is daunting...shame!
ReplyDeleteTired! Christian youths warn boko haram!!
ReplyDeleteNigeria and their palata
ReplyDeleteWho can fight this fuel hike if not us?
ReplyDeleteLinda gas in US is not $1 oh! the prices as at rite now ranges from $3.19-3.29 a liter which will be 450-480 in naira.
ReplyDeleteI hope those figures re correct. well sha i leave every tin to God. Read GIRL BRUTALISED BY GUARDIAN
ReplyDeleteThe campaign against the removal of oil subsidy is politically motivated, misconceived and lamentable.
ReplyDeleteThrough your ill-conceived and misguided protests, you are indirectly, asking for the military to return to power.
To all protesters, if you see a life, grab it.
hmmn odi egwu! jona's days are numbered sha! have u seen the news that jonathan is the most abused president on facebook?
ReplyDeleteAbeg let everybody drop this fuel subsidy issue and go home.Just maybe it's the push Nigerians need to get a little more creative. I guess we've practically been supplying subsidized fuel to the whole of west africa.
ReplyDeleteeven libya minimum wage is higher than that of naija? just imagine.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to jona , he has finally made a guiness world record. Most cursed president on facebook. If u doubt it, ask google.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to jona , he has finally made a guiness world record. Most cursed president on facebook. If u doubt it, ask google.
ReplyDeleteabeg where r those indian prostitutes that fed sani abacha apple?? i beleive there services may come in handy someday with d way things r playing out!!
ReplyDeleteBadluck Jonathan!
Nigeria's NEW NATIONAL PLEDGE!!!
ReplyDeleteI pledge to Nigeria my country, 2b trekking, running and jogging.
ReplyDeletein the US the government actually supports them by giving benefits and loans for education, there is electricity, water, good roads and enough security. If we had electricity and water and good roads I don't think we would be protesting this violently
ReplyDelete@Kemikal, if you wanted to convince people you should have done it without the insults.
ReplyDeleteFuel subsidy has become a way for people to steal from the government.
The govt wey never manage small money na im we wan give millions abi trillions. mba no.
If the govt had done any one of this or more than one, which would be impressive:
-kept the April date for fuel subsidy removal
-fixed a refinery and kept ongoing plans to fix the rest
-taken a 50% reduction in salary
-increased the minimum wage to 50,000 naira (which is still petty change)
-fixed federal roads
-actually prosecuted a corrupt politician (we have many)
-explained the matter of fuel subsidy better without being condescending
-treated unemployment
Then the people might not be as angry as they are.
Sad init. Dr. W
ReplyDelete@kemikal, Its not only the price of fuel that has gone up but also every other thing from food, water and so on, and with majority of Nigerians earning less than 18k.What could be more pressing than this issue please?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that Nigeria has to undergo some measures of austerity but the decision of cutting too far and too fast is going to cripple the economy. austerity may create conditions for growth in the long run (and i emphasize "may" because we all know the efficiency of our leaders)but if there's no economy to grow then what is the point?
@margretmary or whatever! is gas sold per liter or per US gallon in the US?
ReplyDeletePeople claiming that fuel price in the U.S is $3.65 please do not forget that it is the price for a gallon not a liter.
ReplyDeleteWHo are these olodo rabataz that keep saying gas in the u.s costs $3 per litre.
ReplyDelete@ kemikal, i will not condescend so low as to reply you with an epistle.
ReplyDeleteBut i feel the need to do this: On behalf of millions of suffering Nigerians who live on about 42 cents per day; MAY GOD PUNISH YOU AND THE INSENSITIVE NIGERIAN GOVT. ACCORDINGLY.
There is a minimum wage of 18,000. That is even for the employed ones. Wot of those who are not even employed? It simply cannot work.
ReplyDeleteWhoever is advocating for the removal of the subsidy is only doing so because he/she has resources to cope. Please let's be human and considerate enough to fight for the majority(at least 70%) of the population that would suffer this hardship.
Linda..what/where is your source of information please..our American brothers are debunking your stats..
ReplyDeleteKemikal, fuck you.
ReplyDeleteit beats me why some people would think that the money realised from the removal of the 'subsidy' would be used to benefit our country. Usai! some of you talk like you don't know the nigerian system, if they were transparent they should have reduced their budget on security, electricity, etc, they prolly have exhausted their means of robbing the public and decided to use the money realised from the removal of the subsidy to further enrich themselves.
ReplyDeleteNo be here we dey? ehn let us see if they would use the money to develop the country.
i saw the budget for 2012 and then i wonder where all that money is going to if not the pot bellied politicians pocket....They budget so much on road, electricity, security yet no improvement.
Yankee people (Anon Jan 5 1:20pm and 4:44pm and Margaret Mary) abeg we use gallon in the US and not Liter!!!!! Linda's facts are right!! See my explanation below for more.
ReplyDelete1 Gallon = 3.78 L
Currently average US Gas Price as of today Jan 5 is
$3.319/ Gallon
So its $3.319 for 3L of fuel.
That's $1.106/L
Today's exchange rate is approx
$1=N160
so Average Fuel cost in the US is
N177/L
In Abia, fuel yesterday was N170/L. What this means is that Naija is now paying about what the US pays per Liter. Give the Infrastructure in the US, and opportunity available for gainful employment, this is mad!!!!
Cry my beloved Nigeria!!!
Can't believe Dr. Iweala gave a completely wrong data about pump price the way she did. Comparison of international price is usually done in PPP calculations. Income is not the same in all countries and CPI & RPI are completely different.
ReplyDeleteIt was a deliberate attempt to fool Nigerians, she should know better than that.
Cheers.
Nosa
Firstly, Anonymous Jan 5 4.44pm and 4.22 pm - get your facts right. I also live in the US and fuel is sold by the GALLON. There are 3.7 liters in a gallon so do the math.
ReplyDeleteKemikal - I have a feeling I know who you are so I wont return the insults you have managed to weave into what would have otherwise been a clear logical and well thought out argument.
@Tunmi thank u! U said exactly all that I wanted to say. If the govt can do all these, then am all for the removal.....Meggy
ReplyDeleteI live in California, USA and the price of gas is $3.59 per gallon.
ReplyDelete@ all the posters in the U.S.A who are saying LINDA's prices are wrong, please remove the log in your eye before removing the splinter in others'.
ReplyDeleteAmerican gas prices are listed in gallons.
1 gallon = 3.79 liters.
Current day prices in the US may range from $2.75 to $3.50. Please divide that value by 3.79 and you'll realized that the US price is less than $1/liter. In some locations, 75 cents per liter.
Thank you.
To all the olodos above who said Linda calculation for the US is wrong, Linda is actually right. The $3 you pay in the US is per Gallon which translates to 4 liters. So u should all get your calculations right and understand the difference bewteen gallon and litres.
ReplyDelete@ anon 9.00pm... you keep comparing Nigeria with USA...How many people really pay their taxes as they earn in Nigeria?
ReplyDeleteThere is no free lunch in this world.
Anu ofia!!
ReplyDeleteFor those of you that pops up and said I live in America and the price of fuel is $3......you r payin for Per Gallon and not Litre.....so u all go bac and do ur calculation n stop hvin a go at linda
ReplyDeletenwah for u linda,u refuse to post my comment abii, love wat u are doing, may the good Lord be with u.
ReplyDeleteWe can't honestly compare d economies of those countries with ours as Nigerians.
ReplyDeleteAnon 1.20 pm, I live in America too,the price u quoted is per gallon not per litre
ReplyDeleteAs an ever optimistic Nigerian, I believe this great nation will be great again.
ReplyDeleteWhile GEJ thinks he may be onto something, it's mighty annoying that he cant see that we, who don't have common electricity, which is where most of the petrol money goes, will not get on board with this at all.
ReplyDeleteNGOZI IKONJO IWEALA, PLEASE RESIGN NOW AND SAVE US ALL THE TROUBLE, NO INDIVIDUAL IS GREATER THAN NIGERIA.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Say-No-to-Good-Luck-Jonathan/331590076865902
ReplyDeleteI don't want to believe that people are saying that the removal of fuel subsidy is a good thing n its just a matter of how to properly spend d monry on building our refinaries.

Only God will judge them
ReplyDelete@ Security Guard....the US minimum wage at the federal level is $7.25 per hour.
ReplyDeleteAgain, fellow bloggers, stop comparing the USA or any country with Nigeria. Each country is unique and its minimum wage matches their cost of living.
ReplyDeleteI cannot have a good living on American minimum wage just as it is hard for someone to make a decent living on Nigeian minimum wage.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the mistake, I currently pay $3 and change per gallon NOT Liter, but this is the cheapest it's been in a looong while.
ReplyDeleteThis fuel subsidy removal can actually be a good thing in disguise.
ReplyDeleteTo expect a windfall of money which would now be managed by this Kolade group would suggest that this is really TAX ON PETROL not deregulation or subsidy removal.

ReplyDeleteYou're a worthless and irrelevant pile of shit.
I know ur type...go on & jump off a bridge...loser yup I said it
ReplyDelete$/bl/capita i.e. assuming a $100/barrel price, how much does each country make per person, per barrel, per day.
ReplyDeleteCountry Pop. OPEC Quota $/bl/capita
Venezuela - 28.8mm, 2.36mm, $8.18
Kuwait - 2.74mm, 2.64mm, $96.28
Saudi - 27.45mm, 9.6mm, $34.96
Iran - 73.97mm, 3.55mm, $4.80
Qatar - 1.76mm, 818k, $46.51
UAE - 7.5mm, 2.52mm, $33.48
Algeria - 35.5mm, 1.24mm, $3.49
Libya - 6.35mm, 570k, $8.97
Iraq - 32mm, 2.68mm, $8.37
Nigeria - 158.4mm, 2.1mm, $1.31
Du bitz kraank!!!! *Dats German by d way, expecting an epistle on d German Racism/Economy next..lol....Meggy
ReplyDelete"Unintelligent people always look for a scapegoat." - Ernest Bevin.
ReplyDeleteThis quote is about ignorance and stupidity.
ReplyDeleteweldone.. sorry culd you pls post the source of this statistics and how factual?...

ReplyDeletei think that is one of the problems we will face as a nation and generation
what about the hike in all the basic necessities we as average Nigerians enjoy
what of the average child who for now cannot even attend a good affordable private school or who goes to a public school and gets little or no education to be of use to his generation?
what about the father who assuming is getting the minimum wage{18000},will no longer be able to afford his house rents, send his children to school, feed his family and basically hope for a good life for his family.
what of all the people who are trying to run a business and are running on generators 24/7?
most of this foreign countries Nigeria is being compared to has most of this amenities in place so it can really get easy for us to comfortably give theories on how it will be and how good it is for the people
even as we speak, some families do not eat 3 square meal, cannot afford to take their family to the so called free hospitals, gets Little or no education and now you say you want to add hike in even the little they can afford
what has been set up for those people?
NOTHING
That is why we should fight
put the necessary infrastructure in place before removal of subsidy
MAKE LIFE COMFORTABLE FOR NIGERIANS
ReplyDelete@Meggy, please I beg u 2 ignore the bastard named KEMIKAL because she Definitely NOT a Nigerian!
ReplyDelete@Annon jan 10, 4:58PM, as u can see, I wasn't even the one she insulted initially, in as much as I do know that Kemikal is a loser and an irritant, I will not keep quiet and watch her insult Nigerians the way she does. If she comes back here again and vomit her rubbish, she will surely get a befitting response! What an idiot! Ofcourse everybody knows she's not a Nigerian, she probably doesn't even knw who her father is. Thanks all the same. God bless.....Meggy
ReplyDeletePlease Meggy, ignore Kemikal and just continue to march at Gani park and we will be there with you. Ozz
ReplyDeleteVery well said my fellow compatriot. Danke shon....Meggy
