Slain Boko Haram leader’s in-laws get N100m compensation

Late Fugu
In fulfillment of an earlier agreement for an out-of-court settlement, the Borno State government yesterday paid N100 million as compensation to the family of the in-law of the late Boko Haram sect leader, Baba Fugu.

Meanwhile, four suspected Boko Haram gunmen on motorcycle at the weekend attacked a tea shop  in Gazangi-Tashan Gandu area of Biu, in Borno State, killing three people, and injuring five others.

The late Fugu was an in-law of the deceased Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf.
Fugu was killed by policemen in 2009 after he made himself available at the Borno State Police Command, Maiduguri.

Presenting the cheque to the Fugu  family’s solicitor, Anayo Adibe, Governor Kashim Shettima said: “The ceremony today at the Government House, is a solemn one and that my heart goes to the family of the deceased Baba Fugu and others that lost their lives in the sectarian crises that engulfed the state.”
The governor said despite the situation the state had found itself since the Boko Haram sect decided to take arms against everyone, the state government will not stop appealing  to them to lay down their arms and embrace peace since violence would  not achieve anything.
He said it is only through the path of peace and dialogue that could lead to the development of the state and the nation at large.
The family subsequently went to court seeking compensation from the Borno and Federal governments for alleged extra-judicial killing.
The family’s prayer was granted by a Maiduguri High Court which ordered the state and the Federal governments to pay N100 million as compensation.
The state government challenged the lower court’s ruling at Federal Appeal Court, Jos to upturn the decision.
But the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mallam Zanna Gana was instructed to withdraw the suit.
Confirming the incident, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Simeon Midenda told The Guardian that five motorcycle-gunmen attacked a teashop by firing several gunshots into the shop and killed one of the customers.
Midenda further disclosed: “The report of my area commander of the Police in Biu indicated that one person was killed, while seven other customers who sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the Biu General Hospital for treatment”

  7. Mixed feelings about this. what about the countless other nigerians who have been wrongly slain as well? is this teaching us to carry arms and throw bombs in order to get redress on a matter. I think they are getting it wrong, these current spate of killings/havoc was Boko Haram's agenda from the beginning, these boys are just bringing to manifestation the dreams of their slain leader.

  12. Even in death, Hausa still consider themselves more important than Igbos. The Hausa man was a criminal. He was involved with Boko Haram. There is a huge difference between N100 million and N5 million. The N5 million paid to families NYSC copers that were slaughtered is an insult. When will there ever be fairness or equality in Nigeria.

  13. Do they know know the money would be pumped back into terrorism. What a backward and retrogressive dumb move!

  14. The Govt ddnt just wake up and dash them money.

His family took the Govt to court and the N100m was paid as out-of-court settlement.

I bet none of the families of victims of Boko Haram nor families of slain corpers took the Govt to court.

Do not cry more than the bereaved's family.

  15. @ anonymous January 10, 2012 4:43 PM you have gone mad. So basically it is now jonathan that told the borno govt to award millions to a terrorist. Wat is this obsession with blaming jonathank for everything bad in naija. What of his predecessors? Why not blame islam for being a religion of destruction? Why not blame the northerners for being so hateful? Why not call a spade a spade and say islam has failed to teach peace and love amongst everyone. This is becoming very annoying. Jonathan causes people who drive fast, live reckless lives and drink to die on naija roads?. Jonathan causes youth who engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners to have Aids and no healthcare for them.? Jonathan has ruined and ruled naija for the last 50 yrs and sold its resources to the enemy?. How foolish most of these jonatan bashers are. U guys want to bash him for everything wrong in naija cos ur own choice did not become president. He was a big fool for the subsidy removal but please stop linking him to all that is wrong in naija. Just irritating. Sahara reporters and like websites, Buharilovers, sultan of sokoto, IBB and co you are all going toget wat is coming to you. Trying to make life a miserable hell for all just to prove a point that you or your party elect would have been better for the contry

  19. UNA SEE THE KIND OF USELESS GOVERNMENT WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY KO? THEY GIVE BOKO HARAM ADEQUATE FUNDS TO TAKE TERRORISM TO A HIGHER LEVEL. THE IDIOTS WHO GOVERN US WANT TO FINISH NIGERIANS WITH TERRORISM AND HARDSHIP FROM REMOVAL OF FUEL SUBSIDY. GOD ALMIGHTY NO GO ALLOW THIS.

    ReplyDelete
  20. He was a victim as well. We r judging him because he is not here to defend himself! Why was he killed hurriedly extra judicially? Who wanted to hide what.
Now GEJ has said Boko Haram is in his government - executive, legislature, judiciary and security forces. We must quiz him to explain!!!
Even the sophistication of the attacks shows that it can not be by some miserable illiterate people who believe that western education is an abomination!
We need to look deeper and reflect.

  21. @ anon jan 10 7.53pm you are very wrong. The. Attacks are more than likely carried out by misrable iiliterates who think education is wrong. They are the easiest to brainwash and buy over especially if they want to die for this cause as well. The only questionable issue is the funding. Who is funding these puppets? And it can't be too far fetched that they are probably opponents of the current administration and possibly all northern, and 99%of the islamic faith. It smells like a rat, looks like a rat, it must be a rat

  23. @inu bi mi, the religion is not of destruction, rather some of the people are, as they are not following it correctly. I could ignorantly say that Christianity is now a religion of fake pastors who are all about business and money making. But that would be wrong as they are Christians who do not follow that path. so there!!!
(No offence to other Christians out there, was only proving the point! I am not judging anyone!!!)

  24. SO, WE ARE REWARDING BACK TERRORISTS NOW, FOR KILLING INNOCENT LIVES. WHAT ABOUT COMPENSATION FOR THE FAMILIES OF KILLED INNOCENT CHILDREN AND WOMEN?

WHAT THE FUCK, WHAT THE FUCK, THIS MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. I'M TIRED OF THE INSANITY THAT IS GOING ON IN NIGERIA. I NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM THAT COUNTRY FOR A WHILE TO KEEP MYSELF SANE.

  25. Oh WOW! More money to blow up more SHI*T.

So Obama's family can sue the US govt and get paid some cool cash? Look, this is Nigeria where the government doesnt obey court orders. How come they were quick to write out a cheque for this one? Thats whats baffling me. Dont they know the risk involved in pumping more money into this sect?

    ayamtayad!!!!

  26. @ Anon Jan 10, 10:38pm
U honestly cannot compare money chasing pastors to destructive pple! Let's call a spade a spade n not be on the fence. Like many pple ve rightly written, this is pumping more money into terrorism. I have come to belive that Islam is the biggest hoax of modern time. A religion that see's women as 2nd class, a religion whose prophet married 11wives and encouraged his followers to kill, steal and destroy, a religion who cannot tolerate anyone converting outside theirs. Pls pls pls NEVER compare Christianity to Islam. Its like comparing light and darkness. Don't get me wrong, I Love my muslim friends, brothers and sisters BUT I do not love Islam and am not sold by it! its my prayer that God will illuminate their hearts to see what it means to be in a relationship with Him. You may insult me but I have done my research and I suggest you do. You should also read what Prof Wole Soyinka wrote recently. With regards to Boko Haram and their sponsors, all I know is the God of Israel will expose you in good time but remember, whoever lives by the sword will die by the sword. All the innocent lives u claimed, and unrepentendly so, are crying for vengeance. May the Lord deal with you as He sees best fit. Lastly, u sponsors of mayhem, all your kids are abroad whilst you brainwash other people's kids and lead them to kill innocent lives because you have the ability to do so right? It won't be well with you, not now, not ever!

  27. What can one say of a bastard solicitor Anayo Adibe. Anigbo man defending the leader of Boko Haram sect who have killed hundreds of Igbo men, women and children, his own kinsmen? Is he that hungry? Is he bereft of common sense and business. He got that much money for the killer of his kinsmen and would not lift a finger for his people. Igbo people should not allow this man to step on their soil ever again. He is a traitor and a bastard.

  28. Many questions yet no answers
Why was there an extra judicial killing of the man in the first place?
Why were they so in a hurry to finish him off and keep him silent?
Why did they obey a court ruling without an appeal?
Why did they choose to cover up the whole mess so quickly?
Are these people devils? In fact they are devils supporting terrorists and terrorism.
Is boko haram a ploy by some top politicians to destabilize the Jonathan Government?
Is Jonathan physically and mentally well as to choose to generate this much hate for himself by removing fuel subsidy at this time?
Is a good leader not suppposed to get enough buy-in on his decisions before he puts them to action?
    What exactly are his priorities?
Plus what are our priorities as Nigerians?
Are some of those advocating and inciting people against the fuel subsidy removal not the same people in the so called cabal?
I can go on and questioning these issues without an answer

Nigeria is torn between good and evil forces and no one can be trusted.
    Pray for Nigeria

  32. In my opinion, i feel the money was paid so dat the family will not leak out the name of the political gurus behind Boko Haram. Naija govt does dash money to the citizens anyhow. If Naija govt have a good reason for dashing any citizen money, its usually peanut. But for a family to be given as much 10million!, I suspect something fishy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. God punish whoever took this deision to pay. It will never be well for them. The girl that was abused by naval officers and 100m awarded to her, she has still not ollected her money. These lily livered chickens afraid of BH have rushed to pay this one. Oloshi buruku all of them

  34. @ anon 4:07, you must be crazy!!! It is you who has not done your research at all, in fact many Christians haven't. Why don't you comment on the fact that MUSLIMS still believe that there was Mary, Joseph and JESUS, even Moses, or was that not in your research? Or the fact that Muslims have invented many of the things we are using today, including ALGEBRA. It is people like you who make trouble. BTW if pastors are making so much money that people in the congregation have not even made a tenth of money, is that right?
Look open your eyes, and see that this is not religious, but rather political. BOKO HARAM means against western education not Christianity. These people are illiterate puppets who the northern leaders or whoever can easily brainwash. Never associate me or any other Muslim with such people.
Maybe you should start your research, as it seems that you are only reiterating what the media wants you to see!
