Late Titilayo and the husband who killed her |
Akolade was arrested on Saturday at their residence at 8, Akindehinde Street, Isolo around 11pm.
“He came back to his flat the next day at about 11 pm; perhaps, to pick up a few things before making good his escape. Policemen had already laid ambush and were waiting. He was immediately arrested.
Titilayo’s family have been contacted and they have taken custody of her daughter. Kolade is now in the custody of the SCID, Panti,” the source, a policeman, said.
Prior to his arrest, Punch gathered that some policemen had flagged down Kolade’s car around Aye Bus stop, Isolo and quizzed him on account of the bloodstains on his clothes but he tricked the policemen and escaped.
The source said, “Kolade escaped on Friday after the murder when some policemen apprehended him somewhere around Aye Bus Stop. He was covered in blood and even passersby thought he had been involved in
an accident.
“When they stopped him and started quizzing him, Kolade collapsed on the ground pretending to have fainted. As they were making efforts to revive him, he immediately got up and rushed across the road,
nearly killing himself in the process because he was knocked down by a car. To the surprise of those present, he just picked himself up, boarded a bike and fled. Kolade’s car was immediately seized and taken to the Aswani Police Station, Isolo.”
Another source at the SCID told one of our correspondents that when Kolade was quizzed, he simply said, “It was the devil’s handiwork.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, confirmed Kolade’s arrest to our correspondents on the phone, adding that investigations were still ongoing.
At the residence of the couple, a neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Arowolos had frequent quarrel, which often resulted in fights.
The source said, “I cannot say for sure what led to her murder. I was aware they fought frequently but because it rained heavily that Friday morning, I don’t think anyone heard their noise. The next day
(Saturday), her body was discovered; I came back from an outing to meet a huge crowd on the street. I was shocked to learn that Titilayo had been murdered by her husband. Although they had frequent fights, no one expected this.
“I never really had cause to relate with Kolade because I live with a sibling who rented this flat. I was surprised to learn that Arowolo was married because he frequently brought in different girls every day to his flat. As a result, I never knew who his wife was.”
The source also described the murder scene as gory, saying “Arowolo was stabbed severally in her chest and her eyes gouged out; in fact, her husband mutilated her. I couldn’t even bring myself to look at the pictures some of the neighbours took with their phones.”
Another neighbour said, “I don’t live here, although I run a business on this street. I learnt that the man murdered his wife and escaped after dropping off their two-year-old daughter at a day care centre.
When the parents did not come for the child, the day care employees were worried and came to look for them. There was no one at home and it seemed none of the parents could be reached. Matters came to a head the next day when a putrid odour was coming out
from the Arowolos’ flat. I don’t know if it was the neighbours or the day care employees that called the police but they just came here and before you know it, a crowd had gathered.”
At Skye Bank, Marina branch, where Titilayo worked until the time of her murder, her colleagues were still mourning.
One of Titilayo’s colleague, who was recently transferred, told Punch that the deceased was hardworking and was reportedly due for a promotion.
“She joined Skye bank around 2007 and I can tell you that she never received a query from the bank. That is to show you how committed she was to her job.”
Although she said there were times Titilayo came to office with injuries, the source said nobody suspected that she was being abused because she did not discuss her problem with her colleagues.
She said, “There was a day she came to work in bandage but when I asked her how she sustained injuries, she said she fell from an okada.
“Two weeks ago, another colleague saw marks on her hands but when asked how she got the bruises, she said she slipped and fell in the house.
“It is now that I’m beginning to connect the dots. Titi was small in stature and her husband was big. I can only imagine the sort of beating he would have been giving her. I regret not noticing on time.
Probably, we would have been able to avert this disaster.
“Titi was so in love with Akolade. On many occassions, she would distribute copies of Akolade’s Curriculum Vitae to colleagues in the office because she was eager to see him get a job.
“Akolade, however, never appreciated her. Sometimes, he would seize her cheque book, ATM cards and her car keys as punishment whenever they fought even though she was the one sustaining the family financially.
“Titi was very happy last Thursday because her leave would start on Friday, which happened to be her husband’s 30th birthday. She said this period is for ‘me and my husband.”
The source told our one of our correspondents that Titilayo was extrememly close to her father having lost her biological mother at a tender age. This was why she always visited her father every week.
“I suspect that Akolade must have been targeting her leave allowance which was over N250,000 that she had just received the previous day. Also, I think he was her next of kin in all her official documents and he had a lot to gain from her death,” the source added.
Meanwhile, a page has been opened for Titilayo, Facebook. The page titled “RIP Omozoje Titilayo Oyakhire” and opened on Monday by her friends had been a washed with messages of love, and condolences and curses on the suspect.
Meanwhile, Titilayo’s corpse has since been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital’s mortuary, Ikeja. Funeral plans are yet to be announced.

ReplyDeleteI knew this was coming. Its the devils handwork ko. Deranged mothafucka!!!
ReplyDeleteI commend the Nigerian Police Force for catching him eventually, even though he fled the first time.
ReplyDeleteNOW, I am PLEADING WITH THEM not to botch the investigation, no matter how much they're offered in bribes.
SECONDLY, the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions), Lagos State and any lawyer from the AG's office attached to this case, I beg you with all that you hold dear to you, make sure you prepare a water-tight case against this man.
If he pleads insanity, I BEG all the doctors in Yaba Psychiatric Hospital to thoroughly check it out and if he is truly insane, PLEASE make sure he is kept at the pleasure of the Governor in a strong room in the psychiatric ward.
Hmm! My God!pls av mercy on us, protect us against those who we love, not even our enemies....
ReplyDeleteAh this is so sad!! May God bless her soul.
ReplyDeleteI'll repost what I put on the previous post because we really need do everything we can to prevent this from happening again.
In order for women to feel encouraged to leave abusive relationships our society, where a woman is presumed to have little or no value unless she has a husband, has to change. The stigma attached to single and divorced women has to be removed and there has to be a support system for people when they leave abusive relationships.
What this man did to his wife is horrifying and sickening, I can’t imagine the pain and horror she must have felt whilst being stabbed multiple times. But what are we going to do about it? If all we’re going to do is gasp at the horror and express our condolences to Titi’s family then she died for nothing. Her husband may be sent to jail or killed for his crimes but that will not bring her back. So what are we going to do to prevent it from happening again???
We can each make a change in our immediate environments. If you know a man or woman who is abusive towards their partner/children, encourage them to get help in dealing with their anger. If you know of anyone who is being abused, encourage them to leave that situation and PLEASE HELP and SUPPORT THEM. Women often stay in dysfunctional relationships for fear of ‘what people will say’. After eating chicken and rice at your wedding party, your guests will go to their own homes and it is YOU who has to live with your chosen partner. YOU CANNOT CHANGE ANYONE UNLESS THEY CHOOSE TO CHANGE THEMSELVES. Like people have said, please open your eyes, ears, brain…and make sure you read the signs before you jump into a marriage. Marriage is supposed to be enjoyable, not a life sentence!! If people talk about you today, tomorrow they’ll get bored and move on to another topic. We each have only one life to live, so we should make the most of it. May we not end up in the wrong place at the wrong time nor with the wrong person.
That man should ready to accommodate a painful punishment
ReplyDeleteOH GOD i pray pls help me punish this Man......Amen.
ReplyDeleteThis man deserve to die as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd to think he was supposed to be a born again christian/pastor???
ReplyDeleteAnywayz, Every Nigerian claims to be a christian...Even Armed robbers pray before embarking on their robbery...
Sisters/brothers, beware of wolves in sheep's clothing...
sad sad sad.he just hated the woman for providing for the family. this story, aside of the dudes unstable ways, reeks of spite, jealousy and hate. he brought women to the house to spite the woman who feeds him and to prove she is nothing, though she is the provider. that's one mentality that needs to change among nigersians. it is ok for your wife to help you and you help her. our men need to stop wearing this lousy egotistical cap of running things and being in charge. it does nothing but casue ego trips and all sorts of resentment. ths man jsut got tired of his wife being the provider and he snapped. he could have been a team player, support his wife morally until a job opens up to him. african culture will soon make us all extinct. women, stop raising egocentric males who think their wives should worship and bow for them. though my husband is the main provider now, i am sitll dreading what will happen when the tables get turned. thats hurtful to bring women into the house period. late alone bring women to the house when ur wife is the one working hard to keep the family
ReplyDeleteHe is an arrogant, yet emotionally insecure man. His Ego has cost this young lady her life. Linda has said it all in her post above. He hated her so much he had to take her live. I pray Titi finds some peace, and now he will be tormented for the rest of his life, lets see how big his ego is. My heart goes out to Titi's family and oh the poor little girl :(
ReplyDeleteThere is,at least, one good detail about the story-the kid is unharmed.I hate to think of what will become of a child with one dead parent and the other imprisoned.
ReplyDeleteDee dee @5.43pm you said it too well.
ReplyDeleteGod will bless you.
OH MY GOD! This story makes me sooo sick to my freaking intestines.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I can continue reading but didn't I say he would say it was d devil's handwork?
I honestly have no words.
There is NOTHING mentally unstable about this guy as this was obviously pre-meditated murder.
ReplyDeleteMost African men cannot handle the thought of their wife being the breadwinner of the house, let alone the reality of it.
Look at the situation happening here in the states as well.
Linda I believe you posted a story on this issue.
"How Nigerian men are killing their wives in the states"...... or something like that.
If u remember vividly, 99% of the victims were Registered nurses?
I hear these stories of abuse every day.
Look closely! Most Nigerian marriages (I am speaking for Nigerians but this is really predominant within all communities) where the wife is the bread winner of the house are on the rocks.
The husband is usually abusive towards the woman as a result of her success and unfortunately most women stay put.
It's like a quest for these men to desperately prove they are still the MAN OF THE HOUSE. And believe it or not, most times these behaviors are encouraged by their fellow male counterparts.
It truly sickens me to death.
Here in the states, you more than likely need an education to excel and not just education in anything, An education in a field that will GET YOU A JOB which is why most people turn to Nursing.
However, majority WOMEN are the ones who have been willing to endure Nursing school for what its worth which explains why most women here tend to make more than their husbands. With reference to Nigerian marriages that is.
Some men I have heard, even go as far as going to Nigeria to wait in front of nursing schools to marry a nurse they'll bring back here to become their very own ATM.
Which is why I find it very baffling when I see girls in naija fighting for yankee husbands IN 2011.
I have a thousand and one stories to share but I'll stop here as my thoughts are totally incoherent right now.
This story really has me scarred.
But anyway this really more like PSA to emphasize on the fact that ladies and men likewise need to look before they leap which is why I am writing all of this in the first place.
And no matter how much you looked before you leaped, once the man/woman turns into the devil's relative, it is time for you to be out the door.
Pardon my spanish, but FUCK SOCIETY!
People are NEVER satisfied.
U can only worry and vouch for YOU.
Even your mother had to cut the umbilical cord at some point.
No man and I repeat, NO MAN is worth your life.
I am so tired of this issue but I will continue to speak against it because the truth is anybody is liable to fall victim, including me.
May Titi rest in peace and her killer get justice.
This is just gruesome, nd makes me thinkn 9jerians have alota issues, God answereth all! Bt thts why he uses peopke, ths guy is sick nd needs to talk 2 a psychoanalyst or sthng, our prisons r not evnn reforms so afta a while if he doesn't get d death sentence hs still gonna be a sicko. We need to check d heads o' alotta people, their real problems out therend so many ppl dnt knw hw to communicate or who 2 cmmunic8 wth. It coulda been vice versa too, women need to stand up and speak nd stop hiding. The sme bible teaches us submission nd not fear, what happens the kid o' ths couple, he/she will proly grow up wondering wth no answers, nd family will keep fillon his/her head wth all sorts. She was proly a woman fighting to kee her home nd him a man who felt totally docile nd helpless wth neither hvng an scape route, 1 person has paid d price. Let our leaders nd NGO's be alert, psychological malfunctions r real, nd it goes beyond being a xtian or not, we're humans nd we need regular control checks.
ReplyDeleteMay her ghentle soul rest in peace
Nd may her child also grow up to find reason to believ and understand the things he/she could not chanhge
God help us
Oya sush abi na slushhh say something now eh.
ReplyDeleteI'm sored to my bones. This is some1 u said "î do" to on ur wedding day. Rightyl put d guy some self - ego issues being dat its titi's dat provides for d home. May God rest her soul dats all î can say and may he raise mothers and fathers up for dis little child of which dis incident mighte neva leave her memory. God help dis child to grow in ur strength and be a great individual in her generation. As for d man, judgement day awaits you but u wud get for fairshare here on earth first.... FISLAG!
ReplyDeleteDee Dee 5:43 said it all. RIP Titi.
ReplyDeleteToo sad! Capital punishment awaits.
ReplyDeleteDith...i feel you girl. I live in the states and have dealt with my fair share of the most egomaniac nigerian men. my aunts ex husband would go into my acct, take my aunts hard eearned money, blow it on nonsense busines and then have to guts to remind her he is the head once i question him. the last straw for my aunt was when the dude took $25K out of her account and then had the audacity to fight my aunt and sya "pls stop nagging me, i will return your money" so my aunt said oya return it now...retrun it right now. u know the born loser couldn;t? and then he moved out of the house for my aunt and stopped taking her calls. so my aunt when to tell his family he has moved out..the dude insisted that my aunt apologize. that;s when she say go to hell , burn into blazes and never return. like is bad enough that a man is not responsoble to take care of his family. but its worse that with ur wife paying all ur bills, u will still bully her ontop of that
ReplyDeleteThis is a big story and a very sad one indeed. The society has a big role to play in this, must a woman be married to show responsibility? The ans is YES in this sick part of the world.A lot of women are in abusive relationships and are doing nothing but wait on the lord expecting miracle. How can u get a miracle when the change u need is staring at you. A man that hit u once will continue and he will never change. If u are in any abusive relationship, marriage. etc the sooner u run andspare your life the happier u will be. I say FUCK ABUSIVE MEN! No man is worth your life. May Titi's soul rest in the bossom of God. Amem.
ReplyDeletemay God help us n have mercy on this wicked it is really coming to an end , imagine a man killing his own wife,d world is really a twisted fate, anyway her soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeletemay God help us n have mercy on this wicked world it is really coming to an end , imagine a man killing his own wife,d world is really a twisted fate, anyway may her soul rest in peace.
ReplyDeletepls, marry who u love n who loves u.d real story d world willl never hear is dat, they wer forced to marry each other cus she gat pregnant for him.she loved him,he didnt love her and she knew.why stay in a bondaged marriage.kolade deserves to b punished, but killing him wont bring back omo.let him b austrasized for d rest ot his life to bear d pain.i know him very well trust me,he was never happy in d marriage.it doesnt justify killing her.i pray god forgives him.
ReplyDeleteIts so obvious to everyone that Titi's husband killed her out of envy, jealousy and inferiority complex....I dont understand why men cant stand to see their wives moving up the ladder of success,,most men will prefer to have women that will beg for every kobo she needs...the least Titi would have got from her husband is appreciation yet all sheot was a terrible death,,,,am too sure he killed her cos he knew he was Titi's next of kin and all he needed to gain access to her earnings was her death..
ReplyDeleteSush,,I tot u would have written something to justify Titi been killed by her envious and jealous husband....
Ladies,,if ur marriage isnt sustaining life,,,plsssss walk away before it sustains death....RIP Titi.
This is just sad and I wish it would actually stand out to women who are abused that as soon as the abuse starts it's time to EX that relationship
