Local airlines raise fares by 50%

This can't be happening. If you haven't traveled locally in the last few days, then you should know that our local airline operators have increased air fares by over 50%, mostly on busy routes like Lagos-Abuja and Lagos-Port Harcourt.

A one-way ticket that used to cost about N24, 000 is now N36, 000. The increase was effected on Saturday July 16. Their reason? The airlines are blaming the increase on the scarcity and hike in the pump price of aviation fuel which now sells N190 per litre.

And we are an oil producing nation? SMH!

  1. What we produce is crude oil. This is just raw material and still needs to be refined into petrol and other types of gas and incurs a hefty cost. Unfortunately, because we produce oil does not mean that it would be cheaper for us.

  3. On top of it all, those planes are like flying coffins.

If only the roads were well maintained and there were no armed robbers, in a very good car it's better to go by road.

  7. Lisa,

Because we produce oil, IT SHOULD BE CHEAPER......

The problem is we don't have functioning refineries in our bloody country so we produce crude oil, pay to ship it out of the country, pay to refine it outside of the country and pay to bring it back in......Now you understand why the price is sky high.

Truth is people will still fly or risk the madness of naija roads

  9. It's appalling to me to see airline fees skyrocketing like this. What does it matter if you get the cheapest airline tickets if they tack on tons of fees on top of the price!

  10. even at 25k i struggled to afford the rates.at 36k i will struggle but still have to pay.
there is simply no other alternative.it is shameful but true.
i remember travelling over night within cities in South Africa,it was pure joy.good buses, above average roads, good food at the fuel stations, very clean rest rooms and lovely sights even in the night.
yet they say south africa is the crime capital of the world.
we have a very long way to go.

Linda, check try post that drug busting article i sent you.

  11. I just converted 36k to pounds and USD. 9ja is a crazy place to live. People living in nja are flush with money. On a good day you will get to New York from UK one way with $237(N36K) or cheaper. 36k will get you two(2) return trips from Ireland to UK which is 1hour flight. When politicians are dishing out money to ppl while won't the airline, landlord and cost of living go sky high.

They want to kill people with misery in that place..Rise in Armed Robbers..'cos political thugs proceed to Armed Robbery after elections with arms supplied by Politicians..Floods..Boko Haram..got to really see how you can love a country that continually hammers you into the ground
On principle my people in Abuja wouldn't be seeing me in a wee while...

  15. @ Linda - And you were justifying Goodluck Jonathan paying/budgeting N50 000 to each person who attended his youth meeting in Lagos. Perhaps, now you are seeing the bigger picture. A country which produces crude & yet doesnt have adequate refining capacity because of a lack of prudent management of resources yet its government goes about on a spending jamboree for frivolities - WE ALL PAY FOR ITS FAILURE!!
