Sultan or Sokoto and Pastor Oritsejafor |
CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor's reply: “You know I respect the Sultan a great deal because he is a man who means well for the country just like some of us. We will continue to be friends because the only way this country can make appreciable progress is by stretching a hand of fellowship across the Niger and building blocks of unity for future generations. So, I thank him immensely for his eventual comments about the two controversial issues. However, I dare say that I was a bit surprised that the Sultan, who is respected across the country, failed to address the two cardinal issues involved in the controversial Islamic banking before he concluded that it has come to stay.”
For the avoidance of doubt, “Christians in Nigeria are not against the Muslims as people have made the generality of Nigerians to believe. We are not against Muslims. In fact, it the Christians that have always been at the receiving end of every violence that has taken place in parts of the North.
“Let it also be known that we are not against Islamic banking per se. What we have said thus far, is that there are two issues that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, governor must address properly before the introduction of non-interest banking as against Islamic banking.
“One, we have continued to frown at the way the CBN governor who is being paid by tax payers’ money is championing the course of Islamic banking in isolation of other non-interest banking. We are against Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi using state funds to promote Islamic banking as though that is the only form of non-interest banking. It is against the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution.
“He should allow people who are interested in Islamic banking to use their money to sell their manifesto to Nigerians with a view to wooing them to accept that form of banking which is different from what they used to know,” he explained.
“the other issue that my very good friend failed to address has to do with the guidelines the CBN governor had put in place for the issuance of licence for non-interest banking in the country which is different from that for Islamic banking. In every sector of the nation’s economy including the education sector, there are uniform guidelines for the registration or operating license. For instance, any Nigerian applying to the National Universities Commission, NUC, for licence to establish a university, irrespective of its leanings, is required to adhere to a uniform set of guidelines before its registration. There are no rules for Islamic university and another for a Christian university.
“But the CBN governor has failed, thus far, to explain to the nation why he is putting up a different guideline for Islamic banking and another one for other forms of non-interest banking. This is in addition to a proposed establishment of a Shari’a Council of Experts to be based at the CBN to monitor the operations of the Islamic banking and we have asked; is this what operates in all the countries in the world where Islamic banking operates?”
On the activities of Boko Haram, the CAN president also picked holes in the statement credited to the Sultan, who said the state of affairs in the North Eastern part of the country should not be blamed on Boko Haram, rather that the government should fish out those behind the violence.
Oritsejafor, again thanked the Sultan for his position on the Boko Haram, saying “if the eminent citizen has superior information, he should avail the nation’s security apparatus with such information with a view to putting a stop to the daily massacre of innocent Nigerians in that part of the country, because every Nigerian is sick and tired of the continued violence in that region and the attendant effect on the nation’s economy. For the interest of peace in every part of the country, we must, as citizens contribute our own little quota to helping government at every level to reduce the army of unemployed youths in the country.”
In conclusion, Pastor Oritsejafor said: “These are some of the issues, among others, that one would have expected the Sultan to address to assuage the nerves of those who are opposed to the issue of Islamic banking as well as the insecurity situation in Borno State that has left hundreds of innocent Nigerians dead while their means of livelihood destroyed.”
According to him Nigeria is the only nation we, both Christians and Muslims, have and every effort must be made to salvage it together now for the benefit of generations yet.

well said.

Let us be honest, we would always be going back and forth, north and south, Muslims and Christians. For those that are educated in the sense that they can read history: north and south, Muslims and Christians can not co- exist, any where in the world. it was the colonial powers that brought north and south together was never meant to be. Let us stop wasting our time, lets go our separate ways, so many lives would be saved. Let common sense prevail over carpy sentiments
ReplyDeleteAt least the sultan does not speak from both sides of his mouth. Christian leaders in Nigeria need to reconnect with God.
ReplyDeleteI really don't know the reason for this hassle. What is their problem? Is it the appelate "Islamic". If that be the case CAN and others can come up with Christian Banking. WE all know they ate Islam.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the CAN president's effort and I 100% agree with everything he said.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous @ 2:26, I agree that we should go our way, but the muslims will not go b/c they lack resources and human capital as most of them are uneducated. They are keenly aware that they cannot make it on their own. What is happening today with the muslims, e.g., islamic banking, boko haram violence, etc., was predicted by Igbos decades ago, but very few listened.
ReplyDelete@ kemiismyrealname, o ti ya were. Come and see ur muslim clerics begging for condoms and lubricants in my house to defile young girls half their daughters' age before fasting starts on monday or whenever. Mschew. They speak from the mouths in their second head. Shior!
ReplyDeleteMuslim dont have to reconnect with the devil abi, cos he's by their side!
so @Anon July 30, 2011 2:26 PM, there are no hausa/fulani christians in the north or yoruba and igbo muslims in the south abi? your ignorance is appalling. Abi, all the"rejects" should form their own nation abi? Hiss
ReplyDeleteI think the Pastor made a lot of sense. Muslims tend to be antagonistic (I am a Muslim) and as a man of such calibre, the Sultan should have been more careful in his choice of words. They should also sort out this Boko Harama mess.
Why do the Muslims always go to the extream to make people think they're always right or they are the real land owners.I am not a Nigerian. I'm a Liberian, but what they do in Nigeria is exactly what they do in my country and i'm sure in some parts of the world. They go about burning Churches (God's holy temple) only because thier Mosques are very hard to catch fire but yet they claim that God is Allah and we have only one God. They migrate and settle in your towns, cities or village and forget they are sponging and they will want to own the land. They are not afraid to share innocent blood with bomb blasting. They get married to your Christian sister only because she loves him but a Christian brother can hardly get married to their daughters cuz they might disown them. From the way banking is being done in Nigeria, aren't they withdrawing and depositing their money when ever they want? Or only because they want the word Islamic tag to something so that they can own it? Do you people have anything like Christian banking in Nigeria?
ReplyDeleteDamie, i really appreciate your candor.May God bless you. I pray they sort out the boko haram mess, too and start educating northern muslims to get an education. I say northern muslims cos souther muslims are definitely not as closeminded as their hausa counterparts
ReplyDeletenkili
@damiee huh igbo muslims?? i doubt that oh! i was actually thinking of this oneday and i found out that most igbos are catholics!..
ReplyDeleteMuslims have an entitlement syndrome.
ReplyDelete@Anon 5:39
ReplyDeleteAbeg which soup did they eat it with?
@anon 10:06, LMFAO. same thing popped into my head.
ReplyDelete@anon 3:49, yes, most igbos are catholic but an igbo muslim was my classmate in UniLag. They are very few but but they still exist.
But people really need to stop being afraid of religion. Google Islamic banking and you would see that there is really nothing scary about it. Not enough to cause this much furore.
And it upsets me when people think all muslims are northerners and all christians are southerners and yet they live in this country.
@anon July 31, 2011 5:22 AM, please is your house a brothel? Abi, why are they coming to ask you for condoms? this one that you have judged all muslims and called us the devil's aides, I really want to insult you but it is obvious that you are just ignorant and any insults would be like mud on a pig. Caveman oshi.
ReplyDeleteAnon @5.22 and I appreciate your Christian love for telling me I am mad for stating an opinion. By the way, I am a Christian too.
ReplyDeleteanon@5.22...U shld av shown a lil bit of respect and there was lil or no need 4 u to blab dt way.u claim that a muslim cleric came to ur home to beg 4 condom;who cares......out of every 12,there is always a judas.like we av bad influence in d muslims so do we av in d christians and we also have good pple among d ATR worshippers...two wrongs cannot make a right......the dominance of the two religion is d problem we are having in our country..its tym d government let d ATR worshipper and other religions have thier say too..make provisions 4 thier own holidays too...this i bliv will curtail d religious uprisings in d country... no need 4 u to blab dt way.u claim that a muslim cleric came to ur home to beg 4 condom;who cares......out of every 12,there is always a judas.like we av bad influence in d muslims so do we av in d christians and we also have good pple among d ATR worshippers...two wrongs cannot make a right......the dominance of the two religion is d problem we are having in our country..its tym d government let d ATR worshipper and other religions have thier say too..make provisions 4 thier own holidays too...this i bliv will curtail d religious uprisings in d country...
ReplyDeleteKemiismyrealname should stop talking shit. Im sure that incited anon to fire back @ the Muslim clerics that way. The generalization @ Kemiismyrealnam did was rather uncalled for. Dammy and Rajul should view trends before 'jumping' into conversations na..ur responses are almost as irrational as anon's...only anon has a basis for his/her reactions and you guys don't. For real, in a multi cultural, ethic and religious society, tolerance is the watchword, no sect has the right to impose its beliefs on another. Chikena.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me? Or do others find the need for rude responses on this blog a bit off? If you want to respond to a comment, finding decent words in English is not difficult? Which one is talking shit now? It is my opinion, based on what I know. To speak with both sides of the mouth is to never have an opinion, which a lot of the CAN leadership have exhibited over the years. And is asking them to reconnect with God - Whom I assume is their source a bad thing? Haba? Please next time when you see my comment, go and grab a dictionary and a thesaurus.
ReplyDeleteI have been asking this questions for donkey yrs now and still haven't recieved a decent answer. What are the overwhemling advantages of having Nigeria as one country? I cannot think of one. I will like to be convinced.
ReplyDeleteToday is Banking, tomorrow sharia, next Taliban. Thats how its starts.
India couldn't remain one and they had to break it up, same with Sudan. Its all good if south and north can leave in peace but with endless waste of life and oppression, I think Naija should be broken up.
@Kemiismyrealname... You crack me up...You either did not read the article or you just ignored whatever it said completely. The CAN President stated his position on the matter CLEARLY. I'll echo it, "there is no issue with regards to wanting to adapt the Islamic Banking system, however, there has been little or no information given to the Nigerian population with regards to whether or not Islamic Banking is the best route for the country to go in terms of no interest banking". Now, just because he did not take a childish or narrow-minded stance like the Sultan of Sokoto doesn't make him indecisive or in your own words "speak from both sides of his mouth".
ReplyDeleteAll we want as educated Nigerians is a well researched approach to handle the banking system (in this case). Leaning towards a religious form of banking is an ignorant step to take in Nigeria even though there is nothing particularly wrong with such a banking system. We need to meet each other half way and respect the Nigerian people in total. That includes Christians, Muslims and people that practice other religions. If such a thing like Christian Banking existed and Nigeria adapted it, I'm sure a majority (not all) of the muslim population (both north and south) would have a bit of an issue with it. If not for the way it works, for its misleading name. So, in all fairness, I think we should seek other no interest banking systems for peace to reign.
@ Anon 6:04pm..touche! @Kemiismyrealname: your eye don clear abi? you're asking for peeps to refrain from insults, hello pot, meet kettle!
ReplyDeleteOde oshy, Dictionaries and thesauruses you hug around don't teach manners. A child that is not well trained in addressing people at home will be taught outside the house.
Abuse and insult as much as you choose. Does it change my opinion? No.
ReplyDeleteBut @ Anon August 1, 2011 8:29 AM, there are a lot of Christian universities which both muslims and christians go to. Have muslims thrown tantrums because of that? I applied To Covenant Uni and at my interview, when I told the interviewer that I was a muslim, he said and I quote "I hope you muslims don't come in here and start demanding for things and making trouble". I thank God I got my Unilag admission, where the Catholic Church, Protestant Church and Mosque are right next to each other and it is still peaceful. Going through CU's prospectus, you wld realise it doesn't show much tolerance for other religions and it is cos of indoctrination like that, we have people like you and @anon July 30, 2011 10:16 PM as well as @anon July 31, 2011 5:22 AM. You guys don't seem to have any muslim friends and that is really bad.
ReplyDeleteoooh Kemiismyrealname, shuttup already!you just don't know when to back off do you? With all your fuck us? Gawwwwwd! Mschew...didirin!
ReplyDeleteBack off? Who? Lol! Life is too short. Freedom of speech. Read my comments and read yours.....it shows abi?

When decisions like Islamic banking are made, it is important that we are conscious of the long term consequences.
ReplyDeleteAll said & done, I have both Muslim and Christian and TR friends, generally speaking, the fact still remains that Christians are much more accommodating than Muslims, but from very bitter experience, the Christians are learning to probe more, i just hope they wont be pushed too far.
