Boko Haram claim suicide bombing of police HQ, IG of police their target

Nigerian radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on police headquarters in the capital Abuja that killed two, saying their target was the police chief.

"We are responsible for the bomb attack on the police headquarters in Abuja which was to prove a point to all those who doubt our capability," the group known as Boko Haram said after the attack late Thursday.
The powerful explosion, believed to the first suicide bombing by Islamist extremists in Nigeria, ripped through the police headquarters car park, killing a police officer and the bomber, wounding several others and destroying dozens of cars, according to police.

Please don't tell me suicide bombing has come to Nigeria...oh no!

"It is unfortunate that we could not accomplish our mission because our target was the inspector-general of police, Hafiz Ringim," the group said in a statement distributed anonymously in the northeastern city of Maiduguri where the sect is believed to be based.

Witnesses said the motorcade of a senior police officer had driven into the headquarters just minutes before the attack.

Boko Haram, sometimes called the Nigerian Taliban, had warned Wednesday of "fiercer" attacks saying it was angered by a police declaration that its days were "numbered."

In the statement signed by spokesman Abu Zaid, the group said the police chief had recently been making "unguarded utterances to the effect that he will crush us in a matter of days."

The sect this week admitted links with a foreign Islamist group connected to Al-Qaeda, but security experts earlier speculated that it had established ties with Islamists in north Africa. It said some of its members had just returned from training in Somalia.

  2. Nothing will be done until someone really big dies. I don’t wish anyone dead but if their target was achieved, the government will be singing a different tune and will get serious.

How did this car get so close? I read it was an unmarked SUV that was part of Ringim’s motorcade. Imagine that? So an insider must have been involved.

Next thing we know, they will be hijacking internal flights with government officials onboard because they will spare no one as long as they get their targets.
May we never be in the wrong place at the wrong time and may we always be in the right place at the right time. Abuja now seems like a no go area.

    GEJ where are you?

I still think there is a political cabal behind these terrorists.

  8. This group didnt start today! Even 2 yrs ago, time mag did article on them. We like to do siddon look! Boko Haram's idea of Nigeria is sharia and cattle, they dont want anything western. When they were building up in Bauchi, we knew and did nothing. They've been bombing Bauchi, before they shifted around and started the Jos wahala, still GEJ did nothing. Now is the time for him to show who the big boss is, when someone throws a bomb behind your house, do you keep watching television? If maiguard no dey do his job, dont you let him go?? IG should have been fired yesterday! Shame that 24hrs have passed and still GEJ still hasnt addressed the nation!!!! #epicfail

  9. I really dont think it was planned to be a suicide bombing, the guy wanted to pack the car and bolt away, I guess the thing was ill timed, so the bomb detonate before he could leave the place. I do not want to believe that we now have suicide bombers in Nigeria, if this is so then there is a really big problem at hand, if they pull this off, I am afraid NASS may be their next target. That said, how come a suspected car trailing the IG was allowed to enter into the premises of the Police Headquarter without being checked at the gate? The truth is Security measures have passed the stage of putting Soldiers or Police men on patrol, the world is moving and so we must, I live in Abj, and I can say there is no hi tech security measures put in place. May God help us in this country from these cowardly people who waste lives of innocent people and property to voice their so called grievances...Too many questions with no answers!

  10. It is about time Nigeria and Nigerians woke up to the non-sense happening there in the name of religion. A special task force with intelligence is required and a complete overhaul of our Police with those in place trained adequately. The president should have addressed the nation to re-assure them and explain the steps being taken to ensure such a thing does not happen again but instead, everyone wails about the destruction and then it is back to normality. Pathetic!!!

  11. The whole saga leaves much to be desired. It is high time that Mr President and the C in C rose to the occasion. this is not a matter to be treated with kid's gloves. The govt is reacting too slowly to this onslaught. I pray Goodluck Jonathan does something fast before Aso Rock is bombed.
If they can enter police hq, military barracks and eagle square, i believe their next target may likely be Aso Rock ( God forbid) BUT PLS THIS IS A WAKE UP CALL. DO SOMETHING FAST. THESE BOMBERS ARE HUMAN BEINGS. THEY LIVE AMONGST US AND CAN BE TACKLED NOW BEFORE THEY PENETRATE EVERYWHERE.A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE.

  13. Much as I condemn islamic fundanmentalism and any other extreme belief and action, maybe this might actually wake the police up in Nigeria cos when all is evaluated the police seems to be so out of touch and un bothered about the rate of crime in Nigeria. Just maybe this might have woken the others up if the IG had been taken down.

  14. Prepare for the Marines. I shake my head at Nigeria and here was I, getting upset that the Economists linked Nigeria to terrorism twice in one month. They have been vindicated. We are there already.

  15. we need to stop complaining since GEJ has failed us...i believe God would not fail us.... we need to rise up in one voice and stand in the gap on behalf of our land....terrorism would never prevail over our land! if we rise up and pray for nigeria and its leaders.

  16. people that are saying we can't have suicide bombers in Nigeria, what was Abdulmutaleeb's intention?
yes yes we know he was mostly indoctrinated in yemen but he is a Nigerian and it was his yearn for radical islam that made him fertile ground for indoctrination. that radical islamism is abundant in the north. what do we have already in jos etc where people kill for religion. is it not radical. all it take is someone talking them into being a suicide bomber with the rewards in heaven.

  17. This is a barbaric act that should be condemmed with the highest possible terms especially by our Muslim clerics becouse this group Boko Haram claimed to be Muslims. Iam yet to hear any condemnation by our muslim clerics. I wish to let Nigerians know that, the security of Nigeria is our collective responsibility not only for Police or other security agents and we need to take it serious and condem this wicked act by the so called Islamic group. Nigeria will survive no matter how becouse the Lord is on the throne.
