The NYSC is Here to Stay - President Goodluck Jonathan

Goodluck Jonathan on Facebook...
As has become my habit, I took time to read your comments on this page and noticed that a number of you called for the proscription of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The deaths of members of the NYSC during the post-election violence is condemnable and we need to prevent a re-occurrence, but in doing that, there should be an awareness that the NYSC is a force for good and we must never sacrifice what is good for what is convenient for the moment. Leadership is about taking in the big picture.

The NYSC scheme was birthed by the Gowon administration as a means of enhancing Nigeria’s unity by making Nigeria’s youths spend a period of sacrificial living in parts of the country outside the immediate location in which they were raised. And this scheme is to a large extent achieving its purpose.

We need more of anything that will build unity in Nigeria and it is not possible to build unity without unifying vehicles. The NYSC like the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air force and Police are unifying vehicles.

These vehicles serve their purpose because they endure trying times seeing as the core value behind their creation is sacrifice. And just as we recognize fallen heroes of the Armed Forces on Remembrance Day, we will never forget our fallen heroic Youth Corpers.  The five million Naira compensation to their families will not bring them back but it is a gesture to show that we mourn with them. We will do all that is humanly possible to bring justice to their killers. However, in doing this, we must retain the scheme and IMPROVE on it so that it becomes a living memorial to the sacrifice of Nigeria’s youth to the growth, progress and unity of our nation. GEJ

  1. It’s another White Elephant Project so they will not proscribe it. In that case, they should make people serve in the towns where they are living, their geo-political zones or in their choice of towns. Yes, we all know why it was founded but the deaths of these Corpers have hit us hard and we are questioning if there’s any use of the scheme. I was posted to Abuja in 1994 but i changed it to Lagos because of the hassle of travelling and not wanting to live outside my parents’ home! My service year was spent doing community service and collecting allowance. Other than that, it was just one year full of skiving!

  2. What about reforming the scheme? Is leadership also about doing the same thing and expecting a change? Many people have already made up their minds not to allow their wards go outside their domain (especially North). I wonder who will force them against their wish, especially in Nigeria where you can buy your way.

  4. "we must never sacrifice what is good for what is convenient for the moment.Leadership is about taking in the big picture." GEJ

Given the fact that Jonathan took the path of conveniency throughout his election campaign rather than what was good for the propagation of democracy in Nigeria. An example being his unwillingness to be interviewed by a dissenting journalist and his mockery of our intelligence by being interviewed by Dbanj... I am not sure he exemplified the true leader he imagines himself as.

GOD PUNISH HIM! why doesn't he then look for ways to reform it. idiotic buffoon.

and only 5 million naira for compensation but 500 million for useless inauguration?! HISSSSS

shameless dude. so where are all the Nollywod peeps that sold themselves out for a few kobo? i think acting and politics should never cross paths because Nigerian politics is way too dirty to be entangling with.

anyway, I am still a supporter of Ribadu, so please come back from Afghanistan. thank you.

  10. This man is heartless and very unserious...so afterall the dead corpers went through for him all he could do was pay their families a miserable sum of 5million and also he didnt at least try to reform the NYSC....i pray that God will visit these our leaders and i pray that the souls of the corpers would continually haunt him and their killers...None of my family members would ever die for nigeria. Afterall the people that committed all the atrocities in nigeria should die for their sins...i am waiting for the day when the nigerian youths would rise up and ake what is rightfully ours..till then GEJ God would purnish you immensely!!!

  12. I have heard this too many times about "UNITY" I dont believe that NYSC is a way unify Nigeria. Rather make it optional or SCRAP it. If this scheme allows people to pay their way through it then what is the point. Moreover, the 1year is not a joke neither is it worth the troubles that NYSC guys go through. If we want unity lets start from the TOP, the leaders, the governores, the local govt. chairman, the president and Vice president. Lets put our cultural stuff aside, stop wearing babariga or agbada or hats with feathers to an official meeting, put aside all this cultural things that are keeping us behind ( i know some of us mite say thats who we are.. blah blah blah...but has it moved us forward or improved the average nigerians life)Anyways sha...furthermore, the leaders need to send a message always. Its the little things that make a difference not the huge things. Nigeria in over 30yrs of military regime did make any head way,we are playing catch up with rest of the world because we havent taken time to THINK...Yes to THINK about our systems and future...all we want is a saviour who will come and save us from ? Who?..lol
We must start to address our cultural believes, ideaologies, mindsets and future because they the fundamentals for headway. If NYSC needs reform sort it out or scrap it. I would rather scrap it! and get students into work, if people have things to do and basic needs are met, we know that time to fight,to disturb peace will require some thought!

  13. quite disappointing. i was thinking that he would atleast mention his intentions for a reform or somthing! N5million is nothing.....it wunt compensate, ease the pain nor bring back the people. we truly deserve a change or reform.....i'm glad i dnt have to go through this as a nursing student. right now, its not even an option for me.

  15. What a waste of space and he is a Phd holder sometimes I wonder if he studied for it or it was given to him haba. None of his children died in NYSC that is why he is opening his mouth to talk trash. If his child had died then he would not say this nonsense. He would not scrap it abi well i would say that anybody from now that is posted to the north should reject it if they do not want to die like chickens copers a word is enough for you guys make sure that you copers are reading this it is for your own safety.

What trash let GEJ go to the north and serve there himself nonsense. If he says he can not scrap it then reform it and let NYSC make sense because right now it does not.

I was thinking of coming from London to participate in the NYSC having done my degree in London but from what have just happened hell no would i risk my life for what? One of the copers who came from London to do NYSC lost his life in this useless election. Anybody thinking of coming from abroad to do the NYSC program better think twice life as the saying goes no get duplicate i rest my case for this useless country called 9ja which is not worth dying for.
