Local Shea Butter Mixed with Bio Oil?

Saw this lady with the most amazing skin complexion. Asked her what she uses on her skin to achieve such radiance, she said - our local shea butter mixed with bio-oil.
So I go to major stores in Lagos and can't find this butter. Someone suggested I go to any local market. I did and found the shea butter there. Bought it for N150. Also got the bio-oil, mixed it and I've been using it for about two weeks now. I want to stop, but I'm seriously looking for a reason to continue...

So decided to bring it here to ask all our skin experts. Local shea butter mixed with Bio-oil...
Should I continue or stop?

  1. i have done a lot of online research on the benefit of shea butter and i find it irrestisible to use as hair moisturiser when mixed with other oils.....i believe it works although i just start using it too just like you.i believe you are too early to start judging its workablity;give it time to proof itself....like 40 days is ok.linda!!if shea butter works on hair;i believe it will work on skin too;goodluck!!by the way;your skin was beautiful even before.

  3. Hi,
In an episode of a talk show on DStv, a guest talked of how snake oil can remove scars no matter how long one has had the scars. I decide to use her advice. I search for snake oil for over a year, like one in a desert in need of an oasis. A relation was able to buy it in the north and for over three months I used it and saw nothing. The scar on my foot is still the same.

  5. I know bio oil works, it cleared my pimples and face within a short time. I have also heard of an American owned company in the States who use African Shea butter to produce creams and beauty products...... so i would imagine that combining these 2 great products will give perfect result.
Linda, I beleive you already have a radiant body, however i do think you can not judge the difference after using this recommended 'concoction'on yourself, you need to people to assess it for you.
So my suggestion: Too early to stop/judge!

  8. Linda i've been using both for about 10 years and they've helped to diminish my stretch marks. It doesn't darken me because i'm light skinned. However, i've heard ori/okuma/shea butter darkens.

    2. Cocoa butter is the number one solution for stretch marks. Sheabutter doesn't remove stretch marks. However sheabutter will only make u dark if u use it during d day cos of d reaction with d sun. I say use it only at night after washing your face and in that wet state your face is in, apply sheabutter until it blends with d water on your face and leave it on overnight . This will help lock in enough moisture and give your skin a lot of anti aging, leading to a soft skin and youthful glow. Warnings for sheabutter include. 1 not using it in a dirty environment ie don't touch your face with dirty hands or don't sleep on a dirty bed spread or pillow because sheabutter allows dirt to stick to it easily causing more chances of getting pimples. This is the same reason y ori should not be used during d day cos a lot of dirth is blown together with d air, so it sticks to your face. The sun virtually cooks d oil causing skin darkening, more acne etc. As for bio oil, I can't say much cos it never worked for me. It think its a very slow oil. I've got 8 years experience on all natural remedies for skin cos I had black spots everywhere on my face and got d solution to it after I went natural.

  9. I don't know about shea butter, but bio oil works wonders. Its all I use. I don't mix it with any products. I've been using it for 2 months now and it's cleared up the scars I had on my body.
My friend who had horrible stretch marks mixes hers with vaseline intensive cream, and they have faded visibly.

  11. It actually also depends on your skin type. Some people have skins that don't absorb creams/ointments very fast. My advice is that after 2-3 months of using it without observing any result, change to a skin pH neutral cream like dove/Nivea. The darkening of skin might be a general reaction to the unprocessed local butter.

  12. we have diff body texture just like our hair, what works for me might not work for some \one else but sheabutter doesnt lightenu ,its very good for stretch marks and cellulite,i am a testimony........right now,d only cream i use is sheabutter and coconut oil,it doesnt tone but u skin retain its colour and looks well maintained....

but there are different types of shea butter so u have to be careful when buying as some women dont cook it well or they mix it with other unwanted stuff and it reduces its potency............

Anyways, i heard it's quite good for the skin too. My mum also heard from someone that it's very good recently and she bought it, it's working for her, so far so good.

  14. hi, I have been using only pure shea butter mixed with nothing on my skin and hair for the past five years and believe me, the thing works! Shea butter prevents the skin getting dried in cold weather and minimises hair breakage. The fresher the shea butter, the better it works (I mean real, natural shea butter, not those refined butters you see on the shelves in the shops)- I know shea butter has a funny smell but the smell is actually what makes the product what it is. Are you aware that bio oil contains a bit of shea butter? In fact with bio oil, it is the package you are paying for, not the oil itself. As for saying that shea butter makes you darker, it is likely she is spending too much time in the sun or is using cocoa butter which does make the skin darker or you are already dark in the first place- the darker your skin, it is and the more radiant it looks. If I had dark skin, I would be very happy but unfortunately, I am not

  16. I use regular shea butter on my hair and it is the best moisturizer. My best friend uses it on her skin and it works wonders for her but she uses purified shea butter. Most of the ones they sell out there are mixed with some other stuff. Just make sure u get the pure/purified shea butter. I believe that if you use a natural cleanser before you use the shea butter, it will work. Be patient.

  18. haha, i got the same results when i first started using it. It evens out your skin tone, then makes it glow. I noticed visible changes after a month. It really works I tell i you, the only niggle I have with it is the smell, as am using the unrefined one(supposedly contains alot more nutrients than the refined one)apart from that its great.

  22. different things work for different people. I know a friend who said the same thing about shea butter you just said so if that's the effect its having on you stop it and move on to the next product.lol. This said friend uses black soap, mixed locally in the market not dudu osun or what not, bio oil with her daily body cream and she drinks lots of water like a fish. Her skin is very lovely.

  23. linda... i use it on my hair. I was having receeding hairline and it got better. I think its efficacy wworks better with time. Forget it .. linda we love u too pieces.

  24. I like shea butter, my Ghanaian friend got me into it.. apparently in some part of Ghana, shea butter is used for almost anything, and their skin is so soft and smooth.
I have also used bio-oil to reduce the appearance of my wound. i also heard it works well to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Have not used it on ma face or mixed both.
Besides Linda you should use it for at least a month and try to eat healthy it also helps your skin and hair...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Linda, I think you should only use it @ night. Use your regular cream during the day. I am a Cosmetician bdw. You should see results in about 3 weeks, the time it takes your skin cells to turn over. Make sure you exfoliate your body regularly. At least 2ce a week.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Of course you will get darker because the oils (both bio and shea) will act as a tanning agent. Sort of like applying baby oil and laying in the sun...... Try not to expose yourself too much to direct sunlight, if that is possible :-) You may try using a sunblock on top of it. That could help! Bio-Oil does work wonders though on stretch marks and Shea Butter is just so divine....organic heaven lol!

    ReplyDelete
  27. well shea butter is very good for the skin and hair but one thing you must know is that it tends to darken some people..but generally speaking, its nice.then the bio-oil its very good and its one beauty product i cant do without,so keep using it ,your skin needs time to adjust to it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. shea butter contain vitamin E;it could only be good for a very dark skin (just my thought;i am not a skin specialist)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Linda, if you were using creams with toning or lightening effects, using only shea butter will make it seem you're getting darker. It's just your skin returning to it's natural color. I love shea butter, I use it now for my hair and skin. I have also used Bio oil before and it works. Two weeks is too short, most dermatologists recommend 12 weeks to really judge a product. What you could do to offset the darkening is to use your normal creams as well.

  30. Hey everyone!
I am a skin enthusiast and just had to comment on this!
First of all Linda, what exactly are you trying to achieve? You mentioned her complexion,so do u mean you are trying to even yours out or just glow?Or what?Anyways,in regard to you getting darker, shea butter and any other oil eg bio oil draws the refection of the sun to you so you HAVE to wear a sunscreen of atleast 70,or generally you are advised to not really use too much of these during the day :)

What were you trying to achieve with this mixture?Because I've use both as well so I could tell you what to and not expect

  31. i use local shea butter and i mix it with bio oil....thought i was the only one. i cant complain, people say i've got good skin:), i cant say thats what makes my skin work, but i use it.
i dropped all the expensive names, started using the treated shea butter from palmers then i discovered the local pure butter, and i'm hooked. plus its cheaper.

  34. I don't know about bio oil.i had a friend who used it and i didn't see much of a difference. I use a mix of shea, aloe, avocado, and soy butter mixed in with mandarin, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit and orange oils that have been diluted in pomegranate or peach oil. It's very moisturizing and give my legs a nice glam sheen! I know because i used to be the queen of ashy misbehaving skin.

  36. Shea butter made my complexion darker and oily too. There's nothing wrong with being dark before i get bombarded with essays about skin complexion.

It's just that I want my complexion to be normal, don't want it to get darker or lighter. So, i decided to use bio oil by itself instead.

  37. Nigeria and Africa as a whole has all the natural resources for beautiful skin, and in the US/UK/canada (and other places like that) they are hunting all of these things down and adding chemicals to it, which doesnt give a consumer the whole value of the product. But anyway shea butter is really good, and pure cocoa butter too as well as virgin coconut oil, grape seed oil, sweet almond oil...i could go on and on...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Don't listen to lies. Most women will not tell you the truth. If you continue with that mixture, you may turn darker because of the hot climate.

I would use bio oil alone and not with shea butter unless the skin is damaged. Linda, your skin is flawless. Drop the shea butter since you don't have goat skin. Are you laughing?

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK i use this and i live in the states. i actually need my mum to even buy me more local Shea butter sef... bio oil works but u see results of it in like 4-8 weeks. and i think everyones skin does its own thing...so u need to find what works for Linda

  40. I have used bio oil seperately and used shea butter seperately.I will go for shea butter as i use it to combat stretch marks at the top of my thighs did not erase old ones but made it look better and new ones have not appeared.( mind you the smell can also be used to keep your hubby out when u have a headache..lol)I use it on my boobs for the same no stretch...The oil i love so much is not so popular and its argan oil.Lease 9ja babes stay away before you guys make it expensive like indian lace wig oh.
But that oil once a week (cheap but i bought it from morroco and i am not going there soon so i am "mizing" it.Makes my face radiat and mosturised before i dey fear winter but no more.

  42. Hello Linda!
from the little biochemistry I know shea butter is good but not best for the skin.
it does contain a lot of fatty oils, and for great skin you need something more.
I will suggest tocopherol(vitamin E) as it has the uniqueness of the ability to produce synergism between all compounds.
coconut oil is good too,I read somewhere.

Shea butter in little quantity might not be that harmful though, but bio oil has all you need already sha.

    I hope this helped.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Linda, fantastic combination. Just use sunscreen 50+spf on exposed parts of your body and you are good. This will deal with the issue of you getting darker. Continue to be your beautiful self. Try some shea butter on your hair too, it's fabulous. JOISAYS.

  44. I feel like shouting this from a rooftop.
dermatological reactions differ from one individual to another. What works for one person might no work for another.
For universally accepted products and remedies, the law of averages might apply.
Some people swear by Bio oil, yet others think it is a fraud.
Some swear by snake oil, yet i used it religiously on a keloid and it did no good.
try it, if it does not work after a while, just move on.
I use only petroleum Jelly and everyone says i've got the loveliest skin.

  51. I've also started using Sheabutter! I whip mine with processed aloe vera, vitamin E capsules and virgin olive oil! What I know is, all these products have wonderful properties, its very important not to buy fakes, cos they r everywhere. I've just been using my mix for about a week, my strech marks are lighter,I've noticed good difference, and ill continue. As for darkening, its important to avoid the sun, and use this at night. Shea butter is also a very good eye cream, works for wrinkles. In anycase, its important to use these creams in moderation, so as to avoid clogging your pores and creating more problems. The key is don't use too much moderation! Shea butter works!! You can melt it down a little to increase viscousity, because its really difficult to rub.

  70. Linda, using shea butter alone will darken you but when mixed with some essential oil will give you the glow you needed. Bio oil is good but it is more of a mineral oil than a natural oil. When I used only the shea butter, it darkened me until I did a research on how to tone with shea butter. For me, I mixed the shea butter with grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and some drops of lavender essential oil. Guess what, my stretch marks started fading and my skin glowed. But note, only a small amount is needed so as not to clog your skin. Try mixing yours with all the natural organic oils I mentioned and rub on your skin while it is still damp. Tell us how it goes. Good luck!

  80. Shea butter/ori/okuma is a natural wonder, darkens but smoothens and softens when used alone. To get a natural even glow I mix with Vitamin A and homemade coconut oil. Works wonders for Pregnancy not bleaching stretchmarks and makes ur skin glow brightly. For bathing I use Dove and the combination is great on my skin, at least DeHusband continues to say how I'm 'eating' his money and looking fresh, lolzzz. Bdw bio oil didn't work nada for me, even though I used it for yrs. Shea butter is a blessing! Snake oil too does wonders on burns and scars.

  82. This is my testimony about the good work of a man who helped me..My name is Tracy Adams, and I base in Canada. My life is back! After 2 years of marriage, my husband left me with our three kids. I felt like my life was about to end, and was falling apart. Thanks to a spell caster called Dr John who I met online. On one faithful day, as I was browsing through the internet, I was searching for a good spell caster that can solve my problems. I came across series of testimonies about this particular spell caster. Some people testified that he brought their Ex lover back, some testified that he restores womb, some testified that he can cast a spell to stop divorce and so on. There was one particular testimony I saw, it was about a woman called grace, she testified about how Dr John brought back her Ex lover in less than 72 hours and at the end of her testimony she gave Dr John e-mail address.
