Tameka (Usher's ex-wife) was Tameka Foster before she married Usher and changed her name to Tameka Raymond. After their divorce, she kept the name, Raymond.
Coming to Naija - Fathia Balogun is divorced from her movie star husband Saidi Balogun. She kept the name, Balogun.
Saidi recently made this statement to the press - "As for my name that she is still answering (Fathia Balogun), the deed will be done soon. The Nigerian law says that after three or four years, you can do something about it. If somebody wants to keep my name, what of the new person coming in? This has nothing to do with grudges. How many wives do you want to keep my name? How many wives does the Nigerian law permit us to marry at a time? What does the Nigerian law say about that?"
Most divorced women keep their ex-husband's last name because it's a bit of a hassle to change it back to their maiden name, especially if it's a name they've had for many years. And then some like having same name with their children, and in some cases it's the name that's made them well known - in the case of Fathia Balogun, Funke Kuti, Kenny Saint Brown (nee Ogungbe) etc...
So what happens if your ex wants his name back...or maybe re-marries?
Please share your thoughts...
am not even changing my name in the first instance. Why doesnt everyone keep the names they have always be known with since birth, instead of taking someone elses name
ReplyDeleteIt should be the woman's choice. If she wants to keep the name because she likes it or because of its sentimental value, it is her decision. Nobody can choose for her.

I think he's just being spiteful asking that she not use his last name anymore?
ReplyDeleteShe has made her name as Fatiha Balogun why should she now change it? Same with Cheryl Cole...she isn't gonna go back to using her maiden name cos firstly it'll be difficult to rebrand her as Cheryl Tweedy, plus Tweedy doesn't have the same ring to it that Cole does.

These men should chill jare, a name is a name is a name. Is there only one Balogun in Nigeria? He probably insisted she take the name, now he wants to force her to stop using it. Good luck with that. Let the law decide.
ReplyDeleteDitto Anonymous. Why should anyone want to change their name in the first instance? Is it a sign of a woman's undying devotion or something? Because apparently if a woman chooses to keep the name she was born with, it means she loves a man less. I've just never understood that concept.
ReplyDeletehe should shut the hell up. she has built a career with that name so what's the big deal after all like Myne said, its just a bloody name. he's not the only one with it.
ReplyDeleteHonestly speaking; if i were fathia;i will just purposelly look out for another man named balogun to marry;thank God saheed is not the only balogun in the world.he is been childish to demand for his name;he is simply jelous of the poor lady;if she drop that name today;her carrier can not suffer.Saheed thinks because they are no more together;that should be the end of her life.Let people tell Saheed that THE GOSPEL OF LIVING DOES NOT START AND END WITH THE NAME "BALOGUN".He should get lost with his local name "balogun"
ReplyDeleteRubbish. its her choice if she wants to keep the name she grew popular with, or if she wants to drop it. After all people no dey change their names to some funny names?
ReplyDeleteHe should let her be jorr. He isnt the only Balogun in Naija
I understand why she would want to keep the name but I don't fault the man for not wanting her to keep the name. She took on the name when they were married. They are not married any longer. If she gets remarried, is she going to still remain Fathia Balogun? As crazy as it sounds, he has the right to want her to drop the name...her reasons are not that concrete.
ReplyDeleteHe should go straight to hell.
ReplyDeletesaheed is just jealous of the fathia;he could not understand why their separation has not affected her carrier negatively.he is plotting to bring her down and he foolishly think the best way to go about it is by withdrawing balogun from her name.......what a dump idea!!!!fathia is good in her works and their is nothing saheed can do about it. balogun or not;fatia remains my girl.
ReplyDeletethis is why i cherish people like joke silver ;who maintains their name even in marriage;the concept of changing name after marriage should be revisited.what does that imbecile saheed mean by saying what of the other woman coming in?does 4 women dont bear the name of one man?i cant remember how many women bear mrs mko abiola!!!saheed is unreasonable!!!!!!!he should get a life!!!!
ReplyDeleteI dont Kenny Saint Brown is keeping her husband's name. Kenny Saint Brown is her stage name.
ReplyDeleteWhich law is he talking about sef? She can do whatever she wants with any part of her life.....and that would include keeping, changing, turning or upside-downing her name. What part of "divorced" does he not understand? He has no right whatsoever to say what she can or cannot do? He should get a life! Nuff said.
ReplyDelete@the people wondering why the woman has to change her name in the first place: it's not as a symbol of undying love, it's just a family thing. How can tow people truly become one if they have different surnames. Also as the children will bear their father's name, the mother would sorta be left out.
ReplyDeleteBut is you don't agree, do as the Spanish do, the women keep their names and their children get their mother's maiden name as their middle name.
Personally I have no problem changing my name, as long as it is not some unpronounceable Ifa worshiping sounding name.
Saheed kinda disgusts me. I read the full article, what a bad specimen of a man. No one can tell her to change her name, when she got married, it stopped being his name but also became her name so he has to STFU.
Sorry for the rant guys and forgive any typos(gbagauns). :)
This idiot should go find a sharp nail and sit on it! He sounds liek a mega illiterate! If at the time she married him, if she had not wanted his yeye last name, it would have been a problem, he would have said "ah, you don't want other men to know you are married?!? etc" Now, she has the name and they are divorce, he wants her to give back the name, well here a list to things he should give her back when she hands back the name:
ReplyDelete1. All the sex pre/post marriage!
2. All the support, prayers, encouragement that I am sure she gave him especially when the going was good!
3. All of the energy expended running his house hold and I don't care if there were maids for that, she still had to go all the organizing.
4. All the energy dealing with him just as individual and his family.
He is wondering what will happen if he marries another woman and how many women will have to bare his last name - First, Mr. Saheed you last name is COMMON! It doesn't carry any weight, it isn't "Akandae", "Abacha", "Awolowo", "Obasanjo", "Anikulakpo Ransome Kuti," nor "Otedola" or names linked with money, power, affluence!
Secondly, if you are wondering about too many women baring your yeye last name then I suggest YOU REMAIN IN YOUR MARRIAGE AND WORK OUT YOUR DIFFERENCE RATHER THAN RUNNING TO THE NEAREST NUBILE FEMALE AND TO DIVORCE COURT!
Lastly, she has EARNED the right to that name! She is known for that name, it is her bread & butter so STOP TRYING TO TAKE FOOD FROM YOUR CHILDREN'S MOUTH...assuming you have some and if not, well she's got to live too!
Stop being a bitch! Move on with your life, mister!

this is the more reason why in islam, women are not allowed to change their name wen dey are married. shariah says: call your wives with their fathers name. thou most muslims doesnt follows this law, especially in nigeria. in most of the arab country, they call their wives with their fathers name, say for example: Linda the daughter of ikeji, the wive of babangida

ReplyDeleteSaheed Balogun should shut the hell up, at least they are not yet legally divorced, He should divorce her first before making all this noise on name change, besides he is not the only Balogun in Nigeria.
ReplyDeletehahaha Saheed cannot force her to change his name. Not legally at all. If I decide to change my name to Balogun and take advert in newspaper, who can stop me unless the name is copyrighted????
