"My wife can't cook" - Festus Keyamo

Popular Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo yesterday told an Ikeja High Court presided over by Justice Elfrada Williams-Dawodu that his wife, Irene cannot cook.

Keyamo who had last year instituted a divorce proceeding against his wife on the ground that their marriage had broken down irreparably told a bewildered court yesterday that his wife is absolutely irresponsible, foul mouthed, ill-tempered and cannot cook.

In the suit, he had also asked the court to separate the six years old wedding which was blessed with two children, but agreed that the wife should take custody of the children.

However, the wife, Irene in her cross-petition accused the husband of being tight fisted, philandering and grossly irresponsible, and prayed the court for a N20 million alimony from Keyamo.
The couple got married on May 15, 2004 in Benin City.

Narrating his ordeal before the court, Keyamo alleged that his wife severally harassed him at home and office, including barring him from his matrimonial home.

He said: “She is absolutely disrespectful, foul-mouthed and ill-tempered. I even had to greet in the morning. Worse still, she can’t even cook. Sometimes I had to make the food myself.”
Keyamo also denied the allegation made by his wife in her cross petition that he abandoned his children and that he was a wife beater. “I never abandoned my children. That is a wicked lie. My wife prevented me from seeing them to spite me. Despite that I continued to send her money for their upkeep. She said I battered her. That is also a blatant lie. I never laid my hands on her”
He recounted an incident when the wife prevented him from entering the house, after he had arrived late, despite repeated knocks at the door.
“I came and knocked at my door but my wife refused to open the door for me. I left in anger and my wife did not bother to look for me until after a month when she had finished the money for the house keep,” he said.

He also accused the wife of wild behaviour, stating an instance when she onced stabbed the four tyres of his Toyota Jeep, after assaulting him in the office.
The wife, Irene in her cross petition, had accused Keyamo of severally physically assaulting her and lacks respect for womanhood.

Keyamo, however, refuted the allegation and assured the court that he would not falter in his fatherly responsibility of taking care of the children.
“I proposed at the critical stage of their life (children), I might not give her the full custody of the children. In the event that she is married, I will get my children from her because I do not want them to grow under the tutelage of another man.”
Keyamo continues his testimony on 21 April, 2010.

  2. festus keyamo is a loud-mouthed egocentric bigot who obviously has no respect for himself, his wife or his kids. he likes yelling about his family to the whole world. he has gone down this road with his brother before. imagine someone that's supposed to be a high profile lawyer whining over cooking and airing his family's affairs in public. sissy. i hope he loses this case. he apparently thinks very highly of himself and i hope the lawyer cuts him to size.

  9. anon 8:33, marriage is not all about cooking so the man can eat and be happy. but this is a simple matter actually. if cooking is the only thing you want from a woman, marry a cook! i can cook but i'm not interested in men that only go into marriage for sex and good food and then give me upkeep money in exchange. it would bore me to tears. the honest truth is that women just settle because of the fear of being alone. i completely understand the "man-goes-to-work, woman-plays-house-wife-and-cooks-man's-favourite-food-before-he-comes-back" marriage model and I know it works for some people. but if you're a guy and you want this marriage model and you know that your wife can't cook, then for God's sake, spare us all the whining! hire a cook or tell her to go and learn it! but whatever you do, don't tell us about it! the world does not revolve around your pot belly! some of us consider some things more important than food! Neanderthal bigots!

  11. Oh wow, I wonder how much of a credible lawyer he is if he can't handle his domestic affairs.

Plus, did he not know his wife was "foul-mouthed" and "ill-tempered" before marrying her?

Anyway, I hope for the children's sake that they are able to work things out (as in custody, visitation rights, upkeep, etc.) in a civilised manner.

  12. Did he not know all these before he married her? Abi, was he given juju or blindfolded when he married her? It is because when men want to get married they tend to overlook the primary things needed in a woman (good cook, good home keeper etc) rather focus on how many degrees she has, where she works, her looks etc.

  13. Anon 11:06 Thank you! I completely agree with your post! I can cook (and cook well might I add), but that is not all I have to offer in a marriage. Yes, it can be part of it but it is not the main thing. I just can't believe the guy brought it up in court. Olodo.

  14. Irrespective of civilization, every nigerian man wants respect and good food from thier women. The lady hasnt denied she cant cook. Olobe lo loko oh. even if she has a Phd, she must still cook. A british man wont mind since they eat bread and potatoes all day long, but a nigerian man even in USA wont be happy in a home where there is no respect and good food, no matter how great sex is. That is why you see a lot of married bankers eating amala at shitta almost every night....

  16. "ile ola lewu" somebody should please translate that for me.The rich/famous wives you see and envy go through so much pains unspoken until it get to this point.
The rich/famous husband thinks they are doing their wives favour by staying with them and dish out all kind of thrash.Well,Life will definately moves on after this but they should proctect their kids and save themselves all the dirty washing and thank God,it has nothing to do with infidelity bcos thats the only weapon men use againt women when things go bad.
    I wish them well.

  17. The shock the horror! a woman can't cook...quick lock her up and melt the keys.

You can tell this asshole is a sexist, bigot, impotent garbage bag. This is the 21st century a man should be able to prepare a meal and share the household chores.

No woman is gonna put up with you "Pestus"..lol

  20. @ anon 6:24- tell me o! The man claims she's soo irresponsible, yet has no qualms with her taking full custody of the children. LMAO
I'm sure he even begged the judge to award custody to such an "ill-tempered" and "irresponsible" woman.

Erm, in what land does that make sense?? How can u be shouting that she's a horrible person but want the kids to go to her?
    Shameless animal.
