Murder probe after boy's stabbing
A teenage boy has been stabbed to death in Manchester.
Police said the victim, who was thought to be 16 years old, was stabbed once in Moston Lane, Harpurhey, at about 0200 BST on Saturday.
Paramedics tried to treat the boy for a puncture wound, but he died on the way to hospital.
Moston Lane has been closed between the junctions of Ashley Lane and Cole Street. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
Det Supt Shaun Donnellan said: "We are at the early stages of this inquiry, but we believe there may have been witnesses who could assist our investigation into finding out what happened."
Italy's illegal immigration soars
The number of illegal immigrants entering Italy doubled in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period in 2007, Rome says.
The figures come in spite of a government crackdown on crime and an increase in the number of deportations.
More than 15,000 illegal immigrants entered the EU via Italy between January and July, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said.
Many illegal immigrants arrive on boats organised by people traffickers. Find more here...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7564584.stm
Ex-leader, 11 rebels sentenced to death
CHAD N'DJAMENA - A Chadian court yesterday sentenced a former president and eleven rebels to death for crimes against the state. Former president Hissene Habre is in exile in Senegal and is awaiting trial there for torture and murder. He is unlikely to be extradited to Chad, officials said. The Chadian court concluded that Habre killed tens of thousands of political opponents during his eight years in power until he was ousted by rebels in 1990. The Olympics
Michael Phelps; Greatest Olympian?
The 23-year-old from Baltimore is already the winningest Olympian ever with 13 golds and most likely a 14th before he leaves Beijing. Phelps swam into history with a magnificent finish Saturday, tying Mark Spitz with his seventh gold medal by the narrowest of margins in the 100-meter butterfly. Hopefully, he will win his next race...

Ribadu: FG insincere about anti-corruption war – Reps
By Chiawo Nwankwo and John Ameh, Abuja
By Chiawo Nwankwo and John Ameh, Abuja
The House of Representatives on Friday said that there were genuine fears about the Federal Government’s commitment to the anti-corruption war, given its role in recent events around the former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu. It said Ribadu’s demotion from Assistant Inspector-General of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police and the surreptitious moves to withdraw him from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State, barely one month to the completion of his course, smacked of a deliberate design to diminish his tenure or reverse his achievements.

Bernie Mac to be buried...
Large crowds of people are gathering in Chicago to attend a public memorial for actor and comedian Bernie Mac.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson and Mayor Richard Daley are among the speakers expected to pay tribute to Mac at the large House of Hope church on the city's South Side.
Also expected to speak at the Saturday afternoon gathering are Mac's co-stars from the documentary "The Original Kings of Comedy" — Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.
Mac died one week ago Saturday at the age of 50 from what his publicist says were complications from pneumonia.
He had been at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital since the middle of July.

Guns for Texas school's teachers
Teachers in one part of the US state of Texas are to be allowed to carry concealed firearms when the new school term opens this month.
The school superintendent in Harrold district said the move was intended to protect staff and pupils should there be any gun attacks on its sole campus.
Teachers would have to undertake crisis management training first, the superintendent, David Thweatt, said.
In recent years the US has seen a number of fatal school shootings. Read the full story here...http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7564654.stm

Point of correction: As as now, Michael Phelps has won 8 gold medals, not 13/14. He is expected to perform just as well in the remaining swims. He still stands as the only Olympian to hold the most gold wins.
ReplyDeleteMichael Phelps won 6 gold medals at the 2004 Athens games and now has won 8 in Beijing, making him a 14-time olympic gold medalist, the most by any olympian ever(Linda is right here)...one record.. The 2nd is his winning 8 gold medals in one "Games" breaking the record previously held by Mark Spitz who won 7 gold at the 1972 games.
ReplyDeleteOne another note..I most name my child Michael cos this Michael thing is becoming too much (Jackson, Jordan, Phelps, Angel..., well not really for Tyson tho..lol)
