Video: The Igbos are the richest, most educated Nigerians in the country today- Sen Ben Murray-Bruce

Yesterday, the senate had a debate on the need for National Unity and Peaceful Coexistence in Nigeria. While speaking on the floor, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce said that the Igbos who are currently saying they are marginalized, are the richest, most industrious and educated people in the country. He stressed the need for those clamoring for war to be educated on the dangers of war as seen in the 1967-1970 civil war in Nigeria.

"They say the Igbos were marginalized. They fought a war and they lost. Today, they are the most industrious people in the country. They are the richest Nigerians in the country today. They are one of the most educated people in Nigeria today, yet they feel marginalized. If you compare the Ibo man to the other sectors of the society, you would say the Igbos are very privileged because of what they have. Yet, a generation of Igbos say they are marginalized and they want to secede and want a Nation. A young generation of people who have never seen bloodshed, destruction, people being killed, amputated, families being divided, can surely think like that. But what have we done as a Nation to educate them about the destruction of what? Absolutely nothing"he said
According to him, it is important for Nigeria's education system to teach young Nigerians about the ills of war.

Watch a video of him speaking below...

    1. This man no mean well for Igbos or Yorubas. How can a man as educated and as media savvy as Ben Bruce not know the consequences of such an unsubstantiated statement in these trying times? Is Ben Bruce being used to further an agenda? Yorubas and Igbos please use your head, the mischief makers that have kept us at loggerheads for decades are at it again.

    8. It's absolutely uncalled for to always use every opportunity to attack yourselves. I'm pure unadulterated igbo. Birth and marriage but when I see the attacks on tribes I'm sad to my bones. What's the point, is it to down grade and shame the next tribe so they begin to feel like second class citizens. When there is news good or bad all we do is look out for their names and start an attack on their tribes and there is a counter attack. There are bad and good eggs everywhere let's stop these attacks cos it would continue and our children might carry it on. How do you really think racial discrimination passes on. Nobody is born a racist. Please just ignore any attacks on your tribe and hopefully this would stop.

  13. My issue with this guy is that his statements are full of sensationalism and embellishments, over-exaggerated facts...to what recent statistics did you Mr Ben Bruce base your claims on? Can you kindly provide data to support your claim?...you can make your point without embellishing. You don't want igbos to go period then speak about how they have contributed to the development in terms of GDP growth and economical stability by wealth creation and academic achievements ...don't go on the floor of the Senate bragging about something you don't know or you dont have facts to back up. It should be law that when you must speak as a distinguished member of an order either academia, business and especially political your claims must be based on fact or else you are charge for wrongfully misleading the public, especially when those views are made public knowledge.

  15. To be industrious, rich and one of the most educated, you have to be civil, respectful of others, have integrity, have self control, be a problem solver and be a unifying force. I'm sorry but Ndigbos are yet to show they have these qualities.

  19. The problem is that history is not taught in Nigerian schools. Also he says Igbos are industrious and rich, it is all self made. No help from Government.
Government, which has been in the hands of the Northerners-except for Obasanjo and Jonathan- has never opened the till, the way it did for the Yorubas under Awolowo and the indiginisation decree; or the Northerners. This is why we talk of being marginalised.

    1. Imo state, always come on top in the record of academic results and performances, followed by Ekiti state. Being the richest does not mean having one man or some people on Forbes list, no. It is the number of people in a community who are above poverty level. How many millionaires you can get in a community, how many billionaires you can get. How enterprising and people's survival tendecies.

  29. Yes Ben... It is beyond necessary for our youth to be educated on the I'll of war. The government should also bring back history into our curriculum. So we can all know the truth and also avoid some patterns of the old from repeating itself in this time.

  30. Oga u lie....as in, u too lie. Yorubas remained the most educated while hausas remain the richest.Get ur facts right

    1. You don't know what richest mean. That they have Dangote a few others does not make them richest. How many rich Hausas can you find in a typical northern village? Many of the few northern rich guys made money from our Nigerian common wealth (oil). How many families in the North can pass above nigerian poverty level? Apart from what the government is doing for them, how many of them can really stand on their own and do financially intensive projects? How many Dangotes, Dantatas and Indimis do the Hausas have? But come to Igbos eastern states, before you count five families, you must get a millionaire. And a lot of Igbo families are above poverty level. As for education, Imo state and Ekiti are tied for the top, some times, Imo state tops Ekiti.

  33. I see some fools taking his words so personal .. when you say richest tribe . He simply means how the riches, education and industrious is being spread wide on the tribe . Not by being rich individually while others are dying in abject poverty.. 90% of the Igbo can categorically say they are confortable to take care of their families due to hard work..

    2. Thank u very much for this comment u really have sense not all those fools saying igbos are not the richest cause they are not on Forbes forgetting almost all Nigerians on Forbes list got that wealth form oil wells which still boils down to corruption sharing oil wells among themselves.see the northern nigeria the gap between the poor and the rich is on a very wide margin compared to other parts most uneducated and full of beggars on the streets.yet some people want to claim they are the richest cause they stole government money mcheew.

  36. He is right. But i can see a lot of persons saying Yorubas are the most educated. Well, that was in the 70s, 80s and 90s. In this present dispensation, i am of the opinion that Igbos have started to overtake the Yorubas in the number of graduates from higher institution within and outside naija. For instance, if you take a look at the law school campuses in Nigeria, ask anyone that has attended, the Igbos are more in numbers. The UME statistics of the past 3-4 years have shown that persons from the igbo states are more, and you all would agree with me that in all Universities in Nigeria, both State and Federal, Igbos have the higher population with respect to non-indegenes. Ask anyone from AAU Ekpoma, Lautech etc.....

Here's the fact and real truth, Yoruba's are the richest in Nigeria followed by Ibo's. Yoruba are then most educated followed by the ibo's. The Hausas are the most unfortunate and the ibo's are also the most people with criminal minds. The Ibo's have almost destroyed Nigerias image with crimes overseas .

  47. What senator Ben Bruce is saying is that a lot of Igbo families have passed poverty level and Igbos have a lot of middle class families who can have a fairly comfortable life without govt's help than most tribes. You can call them ritualist, kidnappers, drug dealers etc. When it comes to that, I guess Ben Bruce will equally tell you the tribes that does what, because no tribe is a saint here. We all know who the ritualists are. We equally know who steals govt treasury because all na thief, wether na with pen or gun. As for education, he is saying that Igbos have more number of people who are educated and also those thriving well academically. One thing you guys fail to understand is that some of this guys that have shops are graduates. I said "some", I did not say all. But oga Ben, should we continue to stay marginalized because we can hustle? Are we not supposed to enjoy the proceeds of the govt of Nigeria? In this animal farm called Nigeria, are some animals more equal than others?
