LIB Exclusive: Boy who was lynched at Orile was not 7 years old.. was a notorious criminal in Alafia bustop

Here's an update on the young man who was beaten and burnt to death in Lagos recently. The event went viral on social media this week because we all thought the young man was a 7 year old child who stole garri. Read initial story here.

From investigations carried out by LIB, the boy was not 7, he's said to be in his 20s, but had a small frame so many thought he was a young boy. He was also allegedly a notorious thief in the area..
LIB exclusively gathered that the incident happened on Saturday, November 12, at the popular Alafia busstop, Orile. According to residents of the area who spoke to LIB, the lynched man was a notorious thief in the area and he and his gang had tried robbing a woman of her valuables but met his waterloo when he was caught by a Hausa man who refused to let him go even though he stabbed him. Others gathered and the young man was lynched.

Jungle justice should never be an option no matter the crime committed and those involved should be brought to book.

From LIB's investigations, it doesn't look like the police are even interested in the matter because the guy is a criminal and in that Alafia area criminality and killing of criminals is common practice.

A lot of people in the area refused to speak to LIB for fear of being attacked because the place is a very notorious zone as killings, robbery and cult operations are normal occurrences in the area.

A woman who preferred to speak under anonymity said:
"The incident occurred on Saturday morning, the boy who is between 20-25 years is a notorious thief in the area. The Hausa man who caught  him has been targeting him for a while as he is tired of his notorious activities. So that Saturday morning, the boy and two of his friends robbed a girl of her bag and phone but was caught by the Hausa guy who insisted that he would be killed after they stabbed him. Two of his friends ran away but the Hausa man held on to the guy even as he stabbed him, and insisted on lynching him. That day wasn't his first time of stealing but that was his last day."

Another resident of the area who identified himself as Ike, said he wasn't there when it happened but according to the stories he heard the guy
'robbed a lady in the early hours of Saturday, although I was not there when they burnt him, but when I came back I saw the remains of him. They said he robbed a lady of her hand bag.'
'They were three that robbed the girl, but one Hausa man that saw them robbing her attempted to help and eventually got hold of one them, before the other two started stabbing him, they even used bottle on him sef.'

'The Hausa man was adamant, very very adamant that even with his last strength he didn’t let go of the thieve, they even said the hausa man swear  say even if them kill am him nor go leave the boy, even as blood started rushing out from his body, him nor gree let the guy go.'

As people started coming that's when the other two robbers left the boy and ran away.
So when they caught him they beat him up mercilessly and then burnt him

According to eye witness reports, the Hausa man said he even knew the guy that was lynched, and that he had been targeting him for a long time.

'But I nor go lie ooo, the Hausa man know him, him don dey target am since…."

Another resident who preferred to be anonymous said:
'All i know is that I came to my shop and heard that someone was lynched. The corpse has been there since that day. It was today an ambulance came and picked up the body.'

A Hausa guy who works around the crime scene said the Hausa guy who insisted the thief must be killed was stabbed initially by the thief and his friends, this made him angry prompting him to insist that he must kill the man even if it means he would die too.

"He dey give am money N200, N300 make him go chop free am but him no go gree. That Saturday, as him thief, the Hausa man come catch him and his friends, he come stab the Hausa man before the Hausa man begin beat am people come gather as he they beat am. They come put am tire, pour am petrol na so he die. Ambulance come today come carry am"

LIB visited the Nigeria Police Force Divisional Headquarters, Orile-Igamu, Lagos to ascertain if any arrests had been made but the DPO said 'she isn't aware of the case.' and that LIB should go contact the Lagos State Police PRO if we needed information.

  1. It still doesn't justify it such heinous crime, his killers may have no case with the authorities, but they sure have a score to settle with their consciences and with God! #evil

    1. I hope they stab your mom, rape you then allow you to do justice in Jesus name so we can atleast know how you will react, since you sit behind social media as a judge

    2. It still doesnt warrant killing him and taking law into their hands. They should have handed him over to the police and allow the police do their jobs by arresting him and sending him to jail. Hausa people too like death sef. Any little provocation must result to killing in the hausa world. Stmcheew

    3. If the federal government makes education free and compulsory at nursery, primary and secondary school level as it is done abroad, i dont think that young boy will be on the streets stealing. If our politicians didnt loot our billions of naira and destroyed our economy, i dont think that boy will be on the streets with a knife as a gangstar desperate to survive. Whatever his age or whatever he did, i still do not support jungle justice because you that is killing him cannot say you have never sinned in his life. God creates lives and takes life. You have no right to take another person's life no matter what. #SAY NO TO JUNGLE JUSTICE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!!!

  2. I don't even know how anyone in their right mind thought he was 7. From the size of his feet and his face in some angles. Bandwagon people. Instead of each individual to critically inspect and read for themselves, they hear 7yrs old and run with it. (Chibok girls.... ring a bell?)

Anyways after reading that young man Harrison's brother's story, I have a different take on jungle justice. People say take them to the police station or leave them to/for God: when you leave them to/for God, they are still around to terrorise, steal & kill. Our first job is to protect ourselves before others. I really don't blame them for killing him seeing as security in this country is zero to none. Now in regards to the police station: all these area touts are known to the policemen already. They give the police their cut in other to continue roaming around and terrorising people. I've seen this because I've seen a girl get raped and honestly the police didn't care. Everyone was on their own. And they knew the culprits. So to be honest, I understand where these people are coming from sometimes. The downside however is some innocent ones get lynched. The only person I blame is the Governement. Jungle justice is their fault. Every dead person's blood is on their head. Until they learn to tighten security everywhere in Lagos, 'not just on the island but on the mainland and also the rest of Nigeria, it will never stop.

  4. Imagine this mumu DPO, a crime was committed in her Domain and she wants the police P.R.O that is Ikeja to tell us what had happened because of fear! Cowardly act

  5. shameless police force awaiting reform. A blogger was able to gather all these info but a socalled police force enjoying tax payers money don't know their job. Tomorrow it can be the turn of anybody. who made them judge to take the life of another person? This is part of reason it has become difficult to demand justice for cases like Aluu 4, the preacher woman that was killed recently and other senseless killings in the north. Those who cannot speak now shouldn't speak up later for any other victim. justice must not be selective. shame to nigeria police for encouraging this kind of act by not doing anything.

    1. Are you minding all these useless police. They know criminals have been terrorising innocent people in that area yet they dont go there to patrol and protect innocent people. All they know how to do is sit in their office and be collecting bribes from people. I hope the Lagos government will put police there to be protection that area so those criminals can let innocent people feel safe.

MY ONLY ADVICE TO NIGERIA YOUTH IS LETS EXTEND THE LYNCH TO APC SECRETARIAT OR ASO ROCK BECAUSE THEY ARE THE REASON OF THIS MESS. The mobs knows that calling police is a waste of time cause they will release him to start stealing again so the best thing is to send them to hell by lynching. 16. Irrespective of that, it does not give people the right to set him on fire., him being a thief does not justify their action...they should have handed him to the proper authority.... the people who lynched him need to be found and punished. That is manslaughter..that is cruel

  24. Linda, it was really very hard reading this. Not because of how gruesome the account is; not even close! The grammatical errors are just out of this world; very poor sentence constructions, poor usage of verbs, tenses, lack of editing/editorial skills. This is a very very poor reporting. I love LIB but the people you employ to write or report on issues should be very serious minded individuals please!

More of this Linda, way to go. Please bring back investigative journalism, I salute you.

  26. Linda you are annoying. First even the policewoman said she isnt aware of the case. secondly what's the point of bringin them to "book" if they will still be released to kill again. abeg sometimes be critical in your thinking. or is it because you live in banana and you're safe?

  34. The DPO is not aware because she did not do her job. Useless police force in Nigeria. She must be investigated since crime rate is high in that region. She is either not doing her job or benefitting from the crimes

  35. So now that you all have heard the story first hand you can now put closure on your hypocritical judgements. I don't support jungle justice , I support a change in the way we think as a people and life would be a lot better for us. P.s this goes out to each and everyone of us from the president, to the people and to even thieves like this young man. Nobody deserves to die this way, and nobody also deserves to be stabed and robbed too. God help us all. Amen

  39. Our youth are incinerated for being “suspected cultists”, A child is getting burnt in the street for stealing Garri and yet those who have looted our country, pillaged our pockets and mismanaged our lives are living just opposite us in their mansions where they throw us the crumbs off their tables and all we do is hail them “baba oo!”, shower them with prayers and vote them in the next elections to enable them continue from where their fathers stopped before they went 6 feet deep with their thick fat bellies in their gold-plated coffins.
We need to realize that our problem is not that child that stole…it’s not those young men. We have all in one way fallen victim to these demons in high places, they are the problem!
They are the reason that child was not in school, they are the reason he was hungry, they are the reason WE could have placed so much value on garri or whatever he supposedly stole as much as to take his LIFE (in such animalistic manner). They are the problem! And we are the cause of the problem because we keep putting them in the position to hurt us over and over again.
We need a revolution (mostly mental though) to enable us recognize the enemies and not see a fellow victim as one. We are all one in this struggle…When will we unite? (remember if “one will chase a thousand, two will chase ten thousand”…what can over 175 million do?)
Our enemies are getting fat and we are here killing ourselves for wanting to survive. Nigerians, Think and Unite!
