20 foreign shipping companies leave Nigeria over low business, 3000 workers left jobless

20 foreign shipping companies operating in Nigeria have reportedly left the country, leaving over 3000 of their staff unemployed. According to the President of the Dockworkers Union of Nigeria (DUN), Anthony Emmanuel Nted, the Federal government's importation policy is largely responsible for the closure of some of the shipping businesses.

The Federal government have put a ban on the importation of some commodities as part of efforts to revive the economy.
“The current government policy on importation though with the best intention seems to be wreaking more havoc on the economy and ought to be reviewed urgently” he told Guardian
He urged the Federal Government to review the ban on the importation of rice, wheat, vehicle spare parts and industrial machinery until the nation is able to produce for local consumption. Nted added that the failure to do this would encourage smuggling, diversion of ships to neighboring countries, idle ports, retrenchment of workers, unemployment and general loss of revenue to government.

Some of the companies that have left the country include Mitsui O.S.K Line, Nippon Yusen Kasha, Taiwan’s Evergreen Line, Messina Line, Hapag-Lloyd and Gold Star Line (GSL), among others.

APC are incompetent when it comes to running the affairs of our nation, they have done more harm than good.. they obviously have no men of honor in that deception of a party that's why no one is yet to resign for all this show of incompetence...

Unknown said...

They should all go to hell...bloody opportunists!..before they leave, they should transfer their assets to competent Nigerians to holdas principals...not the hopeless "local content" 3000 jobs...naira is our national currency not dollars! and we are trying to shore it up for Gods sake!...China did same...see where they are today...and yes, as a country, we cant keep on importing enmasse and expect any tangible progress in policies guiding local manufacturing...let them return in good time....to haul our export cargo...this great country MUST work for the future of generations yet unborn....not always for today!

Every move this clueless administration makes tends to be very disastrous and uncalculated! How can the economy be revived when thousands and more thousands of people are loosing their jobs on a daily basis... The other time it was in the banking sector, the other time in the oil and gas sector, the other time was in the aviation... I weep for this country! Shame on to all the people that voted bunch of wicked illiterates over professors and doctorate degree holders..

No1 is saying we should not improve our manufacturing skills like the Chinese. But we should do that before we ban importation or people would starve and loose their jobs unecessarily. This govt. keeps saying they want to improve our industrial sector but we don't see them take any actions. Instead they are busy searching for more oil in the north. What else is the definition of cluelessness??

Mr Larro you cite China, but Nigeria and China aren't on thesame level when it comes to the integrity and purpose of the leaders. For China to be where it is now as a global power, the leaders made sacrifices, they did what they preached, they created the enabling environment to encourage manufacturing and exportation, their leaders weren't seen junketing from one country to the other for holidays as most of your house of reps and senators are doing now, they stayed at home to treat themselves when they fell ill, their children went to school in China, they believed China will work and they put in their best to make it work. So please do not compare Nigeria with China because our leaders aren't of thesame pedigree. What we have are lying, insincere, corrupt leaders.

Nigeria is finished under this present administration. They're not opening doors for development, and busy adding to the sufferings of the masses that are striving so hard for just daily bread. Next time when Nigerians hear CHANGE, they'll think twice.

Unknown said...

Dont worry my dear12.08pm...the trends of the dollar driven craze for overaeas schooling is now in check as dollar is at a premium that will guide gradual inward looking...the senators are neverblike before obvious of the vibrancy of the power of social media/IT driven litracy of new day Nigeria, so callousness is in check...finally the pedigree of our current and past leaders though questionable, with resilience and good critique from people like you..and I, they shall be relegated to irrelevance...good response from you, all the same.

This report is completely false and a fabrication. Of the Shipping Lines mentioned, only NYK and EVG have left Nigeria. Hapag Lloyd, Messina and MOL are still in Nigeria and have recently increased their vessel calls into West Africa and Nigeria in particular. Therefore, this report is a figment of the imagination of the author. LIB is a very well circulated online blog known worldwide. If they have any ounce of respect or responsibilty, they would verify their stories before going public with such stories, especially sensitive stories as this. I know for a fact that the Management of one of the quoted entities had to write to one of the Maritime newspapers to retract a similar story circulated sometime earlier this year. I am also aware that some of the Shipping Lines are going to be meeting soon with a view to addressing the false impression this report will have generated in the minds of the general public as well as reassure their teeming customers worldwide that their business is secure and not in anyway in danger due to this fabrication.
Nigerians should be careful what they read and believe. They should also demand that news authors verify their fact as such news can cause incalculable damage to businesses, individuals and a Nation's reputation internationally.

My fellow Country people, pls join me to put d whole blame of all sufferings in Nigeria on Tinubu, d grassroots of APC actualisation of power to our elected president.
Most of us supported Tinubu's led APC campaign n hoped for d best to come but unfortunately, d worst has come.
My GOD alone help n redirect us to d right way as we all can see, ds administration has totally failed Nigerians n put us in a state of hardship, sufferings. Job loses, unexpected deaths etc. Fuel pumps from N87 to N145 n being rumored to amount N200 per liter.
We pray that d creator of Heaven n Earth will eliminate those behind d cause of our sufferings n deliver us. Amen
