Tobechukwu was arraigned before the court on a 12- count charge bordering on forgery, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.
Justice Akapo found him guilty on all 12-counts and sentenced him accordingly. He was sentenced to 7 years on counts 1-8; 8years on count 9; 7years on count 10, 8years on count 11 and 7 years on count 12, making a cumulative of 37years imprisonment.
The sentence is to run concurrently with effect from October 28, 2013.
The court also ordered Tobechukwu to return the $40million as a restitution to the victim and forfeit a Toyota Corolla car, which is a proceed of the crime, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Tobechukwu was arraigned on Monday, October 28, 2013 and pleaded not guilty to the 12-count charges pressed against him. He later changed his plea to “guilty” and was convicted by Justice Akapo accordingly.
Before the conviction, the prosecuting counsel, Kayode Oni tendered various exhibits before the court which were all admitted and marked as such. However, defence counsel, D. A. Omougbai prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, since Igbokwe has shown enough remorse for the offences he committed. Tobechukwu Igbokwe (Alias David Prince) and his accomplice, Ifeanyi Obi were alleged to have duped an American: M. Silva, the sum of $40million in an inheritance scam.
Silva was made to believe that Igbokwe and his accomplice had a huge inheritance which they wanted to move to a foreign account for safe-keeping. The victim was asked to send money to “process” the transfer and in the process, he wired $40m in several installments through Western Union to Igbokwe. Igbokwe also confessed that he had duped other foreigners. Some of them are: T. Bedwell, $6,000 and R. Hunt $15,000.

Serves him right

So in essence he's been sentenced to 7 years ? And not 37 years as sensationally put ?
ReplyDelete8 not 7. One of the count carries 8. To run from 2013. 18 hours not 24 make a day in prison. So practically 2 years are out of it. The guy should be out by 2021 or thereabout.

Do you guys think America is Nigeria where everything goes? Please tell that story to your brothers and sisters in Nigeria.

ReplyDelete$40million ke? You mean N40million? Abeg make they investigate the man sef cuz something is off here. Where did he think they go bring that money from? Where did he get the money he sent? Thieves. I cant imagine Western Union transcating such amount without notifying authorities... not even possible. Sending $10,000 at once raises eyebrows, so I cant imagine sending large large sums till e knack $40million. Again, something is off. Lock all of them up and throw away the keys. Fools.
ReplyDelete40m funking dollers in this buhari regime...dude how did u let urself to be caught???

ReplyDeleteIf this guy is 19 yrs now that means he was 16 yrs in 2013 when he committed the crime. Why would a judge commit this souls to prison when he was just a minor when this crime happened. Injustice!
ReplyDeleteD sentence is too much,we are waiting to see wat will happen to Dasuki and others because I know in Nigeria they like sentencing ordinary Nigerians not looters, deris God ooh justice lateef

All lolters shall perish in this country one day. I pitied the boy who has taken after Nigerian leaders. But I still believe that one day ......
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the caption,I knew immediately that the convict must be nobody but Igbo man..Biafra thief.Igbo boys with fraudulent practices. An average igbo man is a potential robber.

ReplyDeleteTHIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNCALLED FOR, WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR COUNTRY, WHY SENTENCE HIM FOR 37YEARS, HE IS 19YEARS OLD WITH SUCH KNOWLEDGE TO DEFRAUD SOMEONE OF 40MILLION USD, WHY CAN'T WE NOTURE HIM FOR SUCH INTELLIGENCE, THIS IS WHAT AMERICANS WILL DO, HE IS SHARP AND INTELLIGENT YET HE IS GOING BEHIND BARS FOR 37YEARS, I DON'T THINK THE AMOUNT IS UP TO 40 MILLION USD, SECONDLY I DON'T THINK THE YEARS IS UP TO 37YEARS.
ReplyDeleteOUR COUNTRY IS ACTING NAIVE IN MOST CASES, DASUKI EMBEZZLED 2.1 BILLION USD OPENLY AND THE MONEY WAS SHARED AMONGST MOST OF THE BIG NAMES IN OUR COUNTRY AND YET HE WAS BAILED WITH 200 MILLION NAIRA AND DOKPESI TOO WAS BAILED WITH 200 MILLION NAIRA. THE YOUNG BOY DEFRAUDED FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY HIS SENTENCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LESSER AT LEAST 2YEARS THAT MEANS 1 YEAR.
WE NEED SHARP BRAINS LIKE HIS IN THIS COUNTRY AND NOT DUMB HEAD LIKE OUR PRESIDENT. OSIBANJO WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER PRESIDENT THAN BUHARI. THE JUSTICE THAT SENTENCED THAT BOY TO 37YEARS MUST HAVE BEEN DEFRAUDED BEFORE. WE SHOULD WISE UP AND THINK TWICE. WE ONLY LIVE ONCE AND 37YEARS ADDED TO THAT BOYS AGE, MEANS HE IS SPENDING HALF OF HIS ENTIRE LIFE IN JAIL.
THIS COUNTRY NIGERIA HAS NO DIRECTION AT ALL.
POLITICIANS EMBEZZLES BILLIONS OF NAIRA FROM THIS SAME NIGERIA AND YET THEY ARE NOT BEEN SENTENCED, THEY END UP BRIBING TOP OFFICIALS AT THE END OF THE DAY WE FIND OUT THAT THEY DID'NT GO IN FOR THE CRIME THEY COMMITTED. MOST FRAUD CASES END UP BEING INCONCLUSIVE IN OUR COUNTRY ALL IN THE NAME OF BRIBERY.
THIS IS NOT THE CHANGE WE NEED, THIS IS CHAINS.
i wonder when they will start jailing those govt officials that steals govt funds instead they jail guys that use their intelligence to collect abeg make dem free the guy him no steal na
