As her condition began to deteriorate she was rushed to hospital. Her skin began to shed and she was put into a medically induced coma.
'Unknown to me, I had a rare, deadly allergy to eye drops which caused by skin to peel off from head to toe. When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home.'

'I hate to say that, but there were so many blisters - her skin was just tearing off and her lips were very swollen. I looked at her and I was so scared she was going to burst open. I saw death knocking at my daughter's door, all because of eye drops. I was crazy, beyond the worried stage and near to losing my mind. After a week I thought there was no hope - but then as she lay on the bed, unable to talk, I said "Marian, you've just made it to university, that's your dream" and she moved her toe. Realising she could hear me I started to sing our favourite songs to her.Instead of crying all the time I went to the intensive care unit and danced.' Maria lost so must skin she had to be wrapped in a foil sheet and still has to be fed through a hole in her throat. 'Everywhere was swollen. My nose was huge and my eyes were so red you could take a spoon and scrape out the blood.'she said
Specialist skin experts who examined her had told her mother that she will not be able to survive the reaction but miraculously, Maria pulled through. Today, she says the terrible experience has made her stronger.
'When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home. I've overcome a lot of in my life. Losing my skin because of an eye drop is just another obstacle I've made it through. I am so happy to be alive and share my unique story. No matter what the struggles are, you have to believe in yourself - and have a positive attitude towards life"she saidMaria has since gone on to complete a degree in early childhood studies at the University of Roehampton and has written two books, My Life Is Not My Own and ReachOut2All.

ReplyDeleteThis looks exactly like TENS a severe form of Steven Johnson's syndrome where people react to certain things severely especially to medications and end up like this - blisters forming, skin peeling and have to be managed like burns patients. So sad...

ReplyDeleteLinda, pls look into this story further, I am not very sure of the purpose for sending this story to you. A woman brought (maybe here mum, I cant remember now) this story to my church in RCCG Faith Chapel in Catford, London some 5 or 6 years ago and also noted that the girl is now fully healed and needs to get back on her feet. Infact, there was a video show of these same pictures during service and everyone rallied round and donated money. I am confused. What is the moral of this story? Are they trying to enlighten us about the steven Johnson's syndrome because that is what the story says here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1361401/Marian-Adejokun-nearly-dies-rare-allergic-reaction-eye-drops.html We shouldn't use eye drops? We should be encouraged from her experience? Linda, pls ask them to call the names of the eye drop or mention the doctor's name. Even mention the name of the hospital she was treated. I am not being prudish but I need more clarity on this story. If I hadn't come across this before? I would have been a lot more empathetic to the situation but if all of this really happened, how much longer would they continue to milk the story???
ReplyDeleteLinda, I beg you put on your investigative journalism hat biko, get all the details down for us. I will certainly be watching this space.
God have mercy on her

What!
ReplyDeleteIt's Steven Johnson's Syndrome
ReplyDeleteWhat she used was OPTREX, a rehydrating eye drop. This is also sold over the counter because it is believed to be harmless. However, she has an auto-immune disease tendency and reacted to something in the ointment. She developed the very rare condition Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. Ingesting drugs that contain sulfones can also cause in someone with the trait. The doctor can't be sued for prescribing the drug because they may never have known that she has the tendency to develop Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. Only doctors that give her any drug that is known to be a trigger henceforth can be sued.
ReplyDeleteGosh! Sowi
