The Rivers State Government has announced that it has saved about N1 billion through the Bank Verification Number (BVN) validation of civil servants ordered by Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. Also, the State Government has announced that it will embark on a comprehensive biometric confirmation of all civil servants in the state as a further measure of blocking all other existing revenue leakages in the system. The resolution was reached at the State Executive Council Meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House, Port Harcourt. Addressing journalists after the meeting, Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam-George said that the resolution would enhance the financial management of the state. The State Executive Council noted that the biometric verification will also confirm the actual population of civil servants in the state for effective planning.
The Information Commissioner said that as a result of the revenue constraints being experienced by the state the comprehensive biometric verification became necessary to boost the finances of the state. Also, the State Executive Council resolved to hand over the Dr Graham Douglas Secondary in Khana Local Government Area to the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic.
According to the State Government, the resolution was reached because of the need to put the school facilities to use after several months of neglect. The school will now serve as a campus of the State Polytechnic. Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.
