Linda, Please use your blog to flag this issue, and also help educate people if it is illegal for anybody whose vehicle have the capability to tow even if is not a towing van is illegal.
I do it a lot because I have a very strong tow rope and my vehicle have the capability, I have in many occasions help people out of dire need of their vehicle been towed away from a bad dangerous spot, I always get my reward with the relief on their faces.
They should provide standby towing vans,they derive joy in making people part with money

Linda I guess she tweeted you,ask her to call FRSC customer service on 070 022 5537 72 to report the issue, it's not wrong what the young men did, she can report the issue and they will handle it,they only want to collect bribes from those guys and its wrong. Knowledge is power,we have to fish out these bad eggs in our public offices.

Lol. I just like the way the produce charges. Illegal towing. Anyways sha, my opinion is they should have called a towing van.... I think the whites we compare ourselves to or seriously wanna be like done tow cars with cars.

Yes It is illegal to tow a car without a towing van. They could have caused accident because it posses danger to other road users. Towing van has hook to suspend the car being towed instead of rope. We should learn to start getting things right.

Nigerian law enforcement agencies have no human sympathy. All they are after is to make offenders pay a fine so they make their money. Whether u have a genuine reason or not. #sad#

FRSC is becoming something else. All they care is just that road safety. But coming to other areas of safety their brains are dead in those areas. How can they say the woman should stay on a dangerous longbridge with a broken car? Are we even talking of all round safety or just about the road ? Towing is towing whether wit the right van or not. This is very stupid of them. Honestly the police and other paramilitary are part of the main reasons why people no longer help people including accident and robbery victims. May God help us in this country.

this can only happen in Lagos where even the Govt. is busy rubbing people of their valuables. that is why people in need don't receive assistance because people are either afraid of helping the wrong person on finding urself in police or all these hungry agencies net on the road.

You don't tow a broken down vehicle without a towing permit. Towing vans are reserved for that.

It happened to us ( my friends and I) three days ago at Ajah roundabout. The car broke down and we called another friend to help us tow it, after a mechanic made several attempts to fix it. We were at the roundabout for almost 4 hrs ( from 9pm till almost 1am). Eventually our friend came and helped us to tow the car towards Ado road. Before we got to Abraham Adesanya ( to use the roundabout and turn back) some policemen arrested us. I didn't know it's illegal until that day. We had to beg and beg, at almost 1am. It is actually an offense.
They r just looking for money as usual. We all know FRSC is only interested in revenue generation...

Considering the circumstances, the road marshals should have tampered justice with mercy. However, the truth remains that it is a traffic offence all over the world to tow a vehicle with a non-towing vehicle because it poses a serious danger to road users.
D frsc guys are just plain nasty. I won't be surprised if they call on thieves instead of towing vehicle.
This woman most-likely obtained her drivers licence from the back door. It is only a towing van that is allowed to move a broken dow vehicle. Why try to paint the agency bad?. Depending on the arresting officer, maybe the party involved should have been warned but then again, ignorance of the law is not an excuse
Worry not. Some day, the FRSC officials will find their families in similar situation and nobody will help. KARMA.
I have been their victim b4 when they seized my license over unnecessary law(a single line on my tyre which I bought three weeks b4 d incident). They made me pay b4 collecting d license. So anytime I see them on d road, I zoomed off with speed and they will run out of d road. It have been working 4 me bcos once u stop,they will manufacture any fault and charge u.

Now ur rite but wrong. 1, if she could get a towing van but opt out due to d fact she wanted to save money and used d poor guys...pls lady pay those guys their bill charged. 2, if she couldn't get thru to a towing van coy due to dead phone or number can't be gotten easily...den how d hell was she going to sort herself out in dat situation. dem silly fowls should make d towing van emergency call number something a day old baby can recall in danger E.G 101010, 505050,708090 HABA!!!. Wen a friend's car broke down it took him an 1hr to get thru to a towing van guy willing to work, some said too much traffic can't enter it,another start calling mad price....d police had to take over and say guy dats too much money now kool down, and he only did dat cos he had collected his own money 1st. After he agreed to come, it took him another 45mins due to traffic.....mind u he was lucky cos dis happened in front of a police station ooo, if not he was done for dat day, to make matter even bad must police men didn't even know d towing van coy's number, dey kept passing him from one police officer to another.....So is dat d kind of situation u want ur sister, mom, wife or baby boo to be caught in.....at an odd hour again ooo...so my dear be real...na nija we dey so were emergency will go to buy fuel after being called OR fire service arrive without water in d tank!!!..we r getting there but na small small

Hello Linda, am a regular blog visitor though I hardly comment. But I want to educate ppl on this: Towing a vehicle with anyother vehicle other than a towing van is an offence. Pls try to educate blog visitors abt it. The woman iin question doesn't knw traffic rules. Pls its an offence, the FRSC officials were right to arrest her. GBAM!!!!

IT IS AGAINST THE LAW....she actually disobeyed the law by doing that. you need a towing van to tow another vehicle. do u know its so dangerous to other road users. the rope can cut or other dangers might occur. we all need to read our frsc road users manual. shes wrong. all she could have done was ask them to tamper justice with mercy. though ignorance is not an excuse in law court.

I thought the primary role of law enforcement agencies are; 1. to protect and keep safe the citizens, 2. to serve diligently? Shouldn't the primary concern of any officer that sees this situation be, to ensure that the person in distress is safe before applying the 'Law' to the letter (as they deem fit)? I am sure that the law that people like Mr. Benjamin Etim is quick to point out, was meant to be applied to persons that use such vehicles in that situation for profit... Ignorance of the proper law is also not an excuse for law enforcement agencies and its officers.

Illegal towing as an offense doesn't exist in Nigeria. The officials were simply out to extort. My advice, have a copy of their schedules of offenses. You can by at any of their offices or download from the internet. Really no one should be extorted anymore. We have rights and we must enforce same.

I do know that this happens a lot, however I am yet to see the enabling law that makes it an offence. I have reviewed both the FRSC Act and the Federal Highways Act and nothing in them can be construed as making it an offence to use a private car for emergency towing. If the private car is being used for towing as a business then perhaps it would be different.
