Unilever Engages Retailers to Accelerate Growth

Unilever Nigeria Plc brought a unique landmark in the history of Nigeria’s organized retail with its first ever organized retail forum held recently in Lagos. The event which brought further evidence of the high regard and strong partnership that exists between Unilever and its partners was held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.

The event themed, “Accelerating Modern Retail Growth in Nigeria” was aimed at heralding a new era in the Retail landscape of the country. With a variety of topics and presentations that ranged from “Shopper insights from the Nigerian Shopper”, “Emerging trends in the Nigerian Retail landscape” and “Safety in the Retail Environment”, it was indeed an engaging and enlightening experience for all in attendance.

The Unilever Nigeria team, led by its Vice President Marketing, Robbert de Vreede, Customer Development Director, Felix Enwemadu, Brand Building Directors, David Okeme  and NsimaAlakwe, Finance Director CD & Marketing, ArnoudWisse, Head of Modern Trade and Trade Category Management, TreevinNaidoo, National Supermarket Manager, OmotadeOke-Egbe among others, had an interactive session with the retailers on accelerating growth.

Speaking at the event, Unilever Assistant Company SHE Manager, Shola Oladeinde shared insightful tips on making shopping safe for customers. Citing the electricity example, Mr. Oladeinde advised that cable wiring done wrong could lead to fire outbreak.

“Itis very important that professionals do the electrical work. We also need to ensure employees are constantly trained, so that if there is an emergency on ground, they can at least, administer first aid”, he said.

“Another key to success is respecting employees’ dignity. This involves fairness in the workplace and treating employees’ right. This includes, but not limited to timely payment of salary, competitive salary consistent with industry standard, avoiding child labour and employee abuse. Once employees are happy, customers will be happy”, he added.

The evening was an evening of fun and laughter and music at the gala night which rounded off the event at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.

Through its brands, Unilever is encouraging people to make smarter shopping choices and take sustainable actions at home. Unilever’s brands include – Close Up, Pepsodent, OMO, Sunlight, Knorr, Royco, Lipton, Blue Band, Rexona, Vaseline, Lux, Lifebuoy and Pears.

Really?! Seeing this and I'm 5secs away from wailing. I know for a fact that some employees there are very far from happy. Some of them there earn as low as 17k, Linda! That is, 17, 000 naira! Some of them with kids. This isn't fairness to employees, contract labour or otherwise. It's so sad some of these companies are exploiting Nigerians. Very sad indeed.
I hope Linda posts this, someone needs to see this.
