South East loses out in producing Nigeria's next Senate President

According to political analysts, the South East has lost the opportunity of producing the next Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representative in the Gen Buhari-led administration come May 29th. According to political calculations, anyone who is to occupy these positions must come from the ruling party. Since the number one and two positions have already been taken by Gen Buhari a Hausa man and Prof Osinbajo, a Yoruba man, the Igbos were favored to produce the third key official, the Senate President.

But with all the 15 senatorial seats in the South East states of Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu & Ebonyi won by the PDP in last week's elections, the Ibos may have lost out in producing the next Senate president. Senator Chris Ngige representing Anambra Central senatorial district who many believe was being positioned by the APC to be the next Senate President lost his bid to return to the Senate to PDP's Uche Ekwunife.

And the Igbos will come up with their marginalisation theory now...my advice to them is to free their heart from hate, let go of whatever past grudge or grievances they have against this nation and just maybe things will work out. I'm from a minority but I don't even think about that shit cos I'm first a Nigerian, ethnicity means nada to me.

That's what you get when u play regional or religion politics. The SE people are so poor when it comes to politics; imagine PPA, APGA not able to win any senetorial seat and just common LP having one to herself. In my own opinion, I think people of the SE should just face their business cos obviously politics is not their call. Think Saraki from the Middle belt will be in nice position of getting it. So how is that suppose to expand my account balance? You guys should stop preaching division when a united course has been won. David Mark was Senate president for 8 years and his people benefited nothing rather the Nigerian Senate enjoyed stability which trickled down to the Nigerian people. So people should just give the SE and SS a break for performing their civic duties. After all the north has always voted for Buhari even when it was clear he was going to lose and heaven did not fall. The SE and SS voted OBJ as well as Yar Adua. So everyone should suck it up we have a depleted economy rebuild so that you and you and you will be gainfully employed. Now ya all should start bringing it on!!!

Truth be told. The SE sheepishly followed the PDP, voting against GMB in all the SE states in a glaringly vindictive manner. This was not a smart move at all. They've not only lost the opportunity to produce the next senate president, but a may also have made their quest for a SE president in this country a mirage, as they sent a clear message to the north by the way they voted in this presidential election. They forgot that a large chunk of the electorate base is northern. Loosing the support of the north and without a reliable alliance with the west, how can they garner enough votes when it comes to voting a SE presidential candidate in the nearest future? Even if the entire SS and SE vote for such a candidate it will still not match the numbers from the North +West. This may sound ethnic but it's the reality. In a democratic system, if U don't have the numbers U don't have victory. This was an opportunity in which the SE could have established a reciprocable support for the north but they missed it. They may insult me for saying this but it's a bitter reality. I'm an ardent proponent of election by merit and competence void of ethnicity, but election is only by ballots where numbers matter alot, and in Nigeria the ethnic factor hasn't dissappeared from the electorates decision equation. It shows up every in every presidential election overtly and covertly. Sorry, but I must say that the SE fell casualty in the 2015 presidential election battle between the APC and PDP.

I wonder why people are weeping louder than the bereaved. When the Igbos were voting GEJ (which sounds as if no Igbo at all voted GMB!) it was not because GEJ is an Igbo man. He is not. if he had won, the Igbo certainly would not have gotten the Senate Presidency either, and they knew that when they were voting him. I am Igbo, but cannot recall any good the 5 Igbo Senate Presidents we had during OBJ's era brought to the Igbo as a group. Please leave the Igbo in peace. I wonder why nobody is talking about the Niger Delta whose son just lost an election. Or is it a case of 'Igbophobia'?

Anonymous said...

Shut up if u don't know ur constitution

Nkechi J. said...

Am Igbo and I have to say, you are 100% correct in your analyses. Most of us sold our birth to GEJ even when it was obvious he was not going to win. And even if he had won, many Igbos were so blinded by the past they refuse to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you don't support others, don't expect then to support you!
A few Igbos stood with Buhari though, but unfortunately they are in the minority.
I hope with this election, we as a people have learnt to leave our past in the past and look forward to the future. No-one ever moves forward looking back!
GEJ while he might be a nice man was not a good leader, not was hehe ready for the office if the president. He definitely was not in control, this fact is obvious even to international communities, but my brothers and sisters somehow thought wishing it makes it a reality.
Another thing, we need to understand that hypothetical theories are pointless if it cannot be proven in the court of law. Many of my people came here making noise about underage voters, these are not provable, and you have to know Nigeria to know that northerners have a larger population by far, so cheat or not in a number game, they will win if we don't have allies to help increase our numbers.
Another issue is that while many talk, a lot are ill-informed, and some of those informed display their complacency by not voting. If you don't vote, how do you expect to impact change?
Finally, my people need to understand that we are in a new era; well enough is no longer good enough. That you see the truth and refuse to speak it does not mean that others won't talk about it!
We can only increase our chances of joining the leading group again when we understand the new rules of the game and play accordingly!

The Igbos on their own placed themselves on political exile by their attitude in this last election. Common, it was like a show of shame, uncomfortable to see how much their vote speaks volumes about their dislike for GMB! It was so obvious that foreigners noticed that a particular section of Nigeria undisguisely showcased their non approval of him. They have taken their politics a hundred years backward and also revealed the fact that they are politically irrelevant with their votes. Rivers thought they were mocking Ameachi...now see. You guys were a mere sacrificial lamb for GEJs political bid at the detriment of the nation at large and now, he's heading to Otuoke. The gamble or sacrifice wasn't worth it, decorum should have been applied and now you guys will want to do want you know how to do best..."everybody hates us".

I am igbo man I want good 4 my country dats why I'm supporting gmb cos I believe he will be active more than jonathan so it's nt just about tribe, although we messed up by supporting a corrupt party pdp while apc was clamoring for change and we didn't grasp the change slogan

I am really confused on why this article is even titled this way. This thinking/mindset is what continues to take Nigeria backwards. Basically it should be said that the region is not represented, point blank period!. Each party works for its own agenda, it should never be broken down by tribe what so ever. Once Nigerians realize that outside Nigeria we are Nigerians, Outside of Africa we are considered black/savages/niggers we will finally unite and fight for one cause....but until then we will be looked at as SAVAGES who fight each other over who is who. You people should be ashamed of yourself! Maybe if you worked together as one and get the country together ya'll wont be stuck in Nigeria talking all this self hatred towards different tribes and get to see what is outside of compound!!!

As a matter of fact, that rash uncalculated move by the SE against GMB was simply a political suicide

We know the north rigged the election 2 cos those mallams could not have gotten that number of votes with the so called card reader that judas Jega brought.

Good for the Igbos. They cut their noses to spite their faces. That's the price to pay for foolishness & needless tribalism.

Anonymous said...

But you also forgot that the same SW voted overwhelming for GEJ in 2011. Even the north voted for him appreciably then. This 2015, GEJ had 6% votes in Kano while Buhari had only 1% in Bayelsa. E dey una body.

Senate president south. So David Mark is south for you. Smh.

@Anon10:29, one of the reason Igbos remained where they are today as far as Nigerian politics is concerned is becos they keep ur type of mentality, and failing to do an honest introspection and see how to make progress in Nigerian political arena. Sorry, their situation will remain like this until they have a change of mindset.

Anonymous said...

So the Yoruba's and Hausas were bribed by the opposition party then? Blind fool!!!

Anonymous said...

Did you feel Igbos were bad at politics during GEJ's rule. So in that case Yoruba's were bad in politics during GEJ's rule then?

smh! People just open their mouth and talk nonsense.

Anonymous said...

O shut up! It's just politics. Yoruba's had nobody in the top 6 positions for 6 yrs during GEJ's tenure. How did it affect them?

Anonymous said...

Refusing to tell yourself the truth keeps U perpetually in bondage.

Anonymous said...

@Anon10:31 If PDP takes over Lagos how does that benefit the SE ? Is Lagos ur state? Truly Igbos are politically backward.

Anonymous said...

@Anon8:55, So ride on with ur hard labour as that's what u chose/prefer in the Nigerian entity, hence the Igbos should not complain of marginalisation anymore.

Anonymous said...

Whether u belief it or not, politics in nigeria is about tribe.
