Oba of Lagos not APC’s spokesman - Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has finally reacted to the anti-Igbo comments made by Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu. Tinubu said the Oba is not a member of APC and so can't speak on behalf of the party. Speaking to Punch at a rally in Iganmu today, Tinubu said;
“The oba is not a politician. His job is to accommodate all political parties, whether PDP, APC or SDP. So, what did he (Ubah) go and do at the palace? To you Igbos, don’t we pay your children’s school fees like others? Or is it the palace that pays for it? When we conducted an exam and a spelling competition, an Igbo boy, Ebuka, from Anambra, came first and he became the governor for one day.
“Those that won the competition three times in a row were Igbo. Ebuka was sent to Switzerland computer school and then Obafemi Awolowo University. We did not say he was an Igbo boy and he would not enjoy. He became an executive in Oando and he is now in Canada.
“Another boy, Felix, won and went to Switzerland and OAU. We paid his scholarship; we did not deny him because he is Igbo.”

Onyebuchi Ememanka writes and I reason along with him ~
What is the principal interest of the Igbos in Lagos? What do we seek to achieve in our sojourn here? My
take is simple. We seek a prosperous Lagos that is economically viable, peaceful....a mini Nigeria of sorts
where all people are able to live and pursue their livelihood without let or hinderance. As a people that thrive
on commerce, Igbos want a Lagos where there are government policies that promote the growth of
commerce and business. A Lagos where government builds roads, bridges, hospitals and is generally alive
to their duties. Education is free in Lagos and our children enjoy this. No Igbo child has been sent away
from any public school in Lagos. Lagos state government pays WAEC and NECO fees for all students in
Lagos....our children enjoy this too.
What do we really want in Lagos? The truth is that we are strangers here. Lagos belongs to some people,
just like Onitsha and Aba. Let's not carry on as if this place is a no man's land. It is not. All of a sudden,
Jimi Agbaje has become an Igboman....we have adopted him as our son.....the same way we adopted
President Jonathan in the last election against our strategic interest as a people...a decision that has left us
in serious political confusion and our senators begging to be admitted into the APC.
What is the difference between Jimi Agbaje and Akinwumi Ambode? Is any of them Igbo? What is our
problem? I believe that we have a fair share here. We live in peace unlike our people in the North. I don't
think there are more Igbos in Lagos than there are in Kano, yet we live peacefully here. Yorubas are highly
politically sophisticated people and they understand that it us better for them to have a government in
Lagos that belongs to the same party as the party at the centre. Igbos cannot love Lagos more than
Yorubas. This is their land. If anything happens here now, we will all leave and return home. These people
own here...this is their home and we must respect their feelings. Every person living in Lagos wants more
federal presence in Lagos. We want a 4th mainland bridge, we want so many other things that the federal
government can do. In the years past, Lagos hasn't enjoyed much federal intervention because of political
party differences. Now they have that chance and we want to spoil it for them by being more catholic than
the pope. Let everybody vote any candidate he wants but I reject any collective Igbo move to vote against
the strategic interests of the people who own the land where we live and make our living. Lagos has been
good to our people. We have succeeded here in business and the professions.
Let's not disrespect the people of Lagos. I will not support any move that will create an impression that
Igbos are against the interest of the owners of Lagos. Nobody has murdered our people here like what we
see in the north. Lagos remains the only state in this country where Igbos hold top government positions.
Even our neighbors and brothers, Rivers State have never given us that privilege despite our huge
population and presence there. As for me, I want Lagos to progress and on Saturday, I will proudly vote for
Akinwumi Ambode.

Tinubu Added insult to injury, Yes we now know we are defeated people.

Its clear now, listen to this drug dealer called Tinubu.
To you Igbos, don’t we pay your children’s school fees like others? Or is it the palace that pays for it?

What an insult meaning we are refugees that you help pay their school fee, this man made me hate his attitude.

All is fair in war, and starvation is one of the weapons of war. I don't see why we should feed our enemies fat in order for them to fight harder." Chief Obafemi Awolowo (Nigerian Minister of Finance)

Reminder of this whole Evil against igbos

Anonymous said...

Please answer, mr ubah.what did you go to the palace for? When fayose took front page ads insulting GMB,I remember the PDP issued a statement that, fayose was, speaking for himself and not for the pdp.

So why should the Obas statement be treated differently from Fayoses?Or that of the several high chiefs that made their subjects swear blood oaths in the east to vote pdp?

Enough of this already please.pdp should campaign with useful tools instead of something that most of us are guilty of.

"Bestialities and indignities of all kinds were visited on Biafrans in 1966. In Ikeja Barracks (Western Nigeria) Biafrans were forcibly fed on a mixture of human urine and faeces. In Northern Nigeria numerous Biafran house-wives and nursing mothers were raped before their husbands and children. Young girls were abducted from their homes, working places and schools and forced into sexual intercourse with sick, demented and leprous men. Mr. Erif Spiff (Eyewitness, 1966)

"There has been genocide, for example on the occasion of the 1966 massacres ... Two areas have suffered badly [from the fighting]. Firstly the region between the towns of Benin and Asaba where only widows and orphans remain, Federal troops having for unknown reasons massacred all the men. According to eyewitnesses of that massacre the Nigerian commander ordered the execution of every Ibo male over the age of ten years." Monsignor Georges (sent down on a fact-finding mission by His holiness the Pope), Le Monde (French Evening newspaper) April 5, 1968.

"... 650 refugee camps... contained about 700,000 haggard bundles of human flotsam waiting hopelessly for a meal, outside the camps... was the reminder of an estimated four and a half to five million displaced persons... the Kwasiokor scourge... a million and half children... suffer(ed) from it during January; that put the forecast death toll at another 300,000 children... More than the pogroms of 1966, more than the war casualties, more than the terror bombings, it was the experience of watching helplessly their children waste away and die that gave birth to... a deep and unrelenting loathing... It is a feeling that will one day reap a bitter harvest unless... " (Frederick Forsyth, Umuahia, Biafra January 1969)

"...I saw several hundred of Zombie-like creatures -men, women and children, lying, sitting or squatting in the midst of others who were dead. I believe that any foreign troops from anywhere in the world occupying Ikot Ekpene or any other town in Biafra would have shown much more sympathy..." (Gen. Alex Madiebo, Ikot Ekpene, July 1968)

"One word now describes the policy of the Nigerian military government towards secessionist Biafra: genocide. It is ugly and extreme but it is the only word which fits Nigeria's decision to stop the International Committee of the red Cross, and other relief agencies, from flying food to Biafra ..." the Ibos must be considerably reduced in number" (Lagos Policeman quoted in New York Review, 21 December, 1967)

"I want to see no Red Cross, no Caritas, no World Council of Churches, no Pope, no missionary and no UN delegation. I want to prevent even one Ibo from having even one piece to eat before their capitulation. We shoot at everything that moves and when our troops march into the centre of Ibo territory, we shoot at everything even at things that do not move... " ( Benjamin Adekunle. Commander, 3rd Marine Commando Division, Nigerian Army).

"...The war aim and (final) solution properly speaking of the entire problem...is to discriminate against the Ibos and in their own interest. Such discrimination would include above all the detachment of those oil-rich territories in the Eastern Region... in addition, the Ibos' freedom of movement would be restricted, to prevent their renewed penetration into other parts... leaving any access to the sea to the Ibos... is quite out of the question..." (Federal Nigerian Minister to E. C. Schwarzenback, Swiss Review of Africa, February 1968)

"Let us go and crush them. We will pillage their property, rape their womenfolk, kill off their menfolk and leave them uselessly weeping. We will complete the pogrom of 1966" (The theme song of Radio Kaduna, government-controlled, 1967-1970).

"Unfortunately this [Gowon's] enlightenment at the top level does not penetrate very deep: a Lagos police officer was quoted last month as saying that the Ibos must be considerably reduced in number" Dr Conor cruise O'Bien , 21 December 1967 New York Review

"The same UNICEF representative went on to convey something of what lay behind this intransigence: "Among the large majority hailing from that tribe (Yorubas) who are most vocal in inciting the complete extermination of the Ibos, I often heard remarks that all Nigeria's ills will be cured once the Ibos have been removed ..." Dr Conor Cruise O'Bien (21 December, 1967, New York Review).

"Until now efforts to relieve the Biafran people have been thwarted by the desire of the central government of Nigeria to pursue total and unconditional victory and by the fear of the Ibo people that surrender means wholesale atrocities and genocide. But genocide is what is taking place right now - and starvation is the grim reaper. This is not the time to stand on ceremony, or to go through channels or to observe the diplomatic niceties.. The destruction of an entire people is an immoral objective even in the most moral of wars. It can never be justified; it can never be condoned." Mr. Richard Nixon, September 9, 1968 (During the Presidential Campaign).

Find out utterances and circumstances that led to the massacre of 3m Igbos during the war. You guys hv never been in our shoes so u can't tell us to let this go. We know the implications of what the Oba said and the whole world must take note. Oba Akiolu will be held accountable for whatever happens to Igbos before, during or long after the elections. Forget what Oba said he is entitled to his opinion and besides if you all want to be honest we have all made mistakes in our lives, having said that don't we like the way they have developed the state? Nigerian politics is something else, it is also possible another political party is behind his statement so as to discredit APC. Just my thought. Tinubu Should just go and have several seats, instead of apologizing on the Oba's behalf he's here to tell us what he did for igbos, for crying out loud the people you mentioned that benefited merited it, so it would have been a crime on your part not to Favor them accordingly, because that's what should be obtainable everywhere including in a foreign country, merit is merit and nobody can deny anyone their due recompense, but now the question is, what has the Igbo nation living in Lagos done to deserve a death threat from the royal father? Tinubu should pls stop begging the question, he claims the Oba is not a member of the APC, yet he (the Oba) claims he picked Ambode, and also categorically mentioned that people should vote for the party, so I wonder what point Tinubu is trying to make, the truth is that the royal father has desecrated the throne by meddling with things as dirty as partisan politics, and at such has ruined Ambode's chances, and as my people would say ''Onye kpara nku ahuhu si ngwere putara ya oriri''. Meaning- ''he who gathered firewood full of insects has himself invited the lizards to his house'', so whatever the insult his throne receives for this singular statement he made, he should know that he asked for it, period!!!

If we are to lay claim to Lagos, let me put it this way, TINUBU will go back to Iragbiji in Osun state, I still haven't found the Fashola ancestry of Lagos and Ambode, go back to Ondo. But NO I won't campaign on such calumny. Not some Ife v. Modakeke war again.

Jimi Agbaje is not 'selling' Lagos to igbos. As a matter of fact, APC in last 16 years has sold 69% of Lagos lands to Igbo businessmen.

Registration of voters is as per residence NOT state of origin. The igbos drive Lagos economically, they've not asked to be Governor. However, there is nothing wrong if Jimi solicits the support of the igbos, registered electorates, to win an election. Why are not mentioning Sabo and the Lepers association in Oyingbo where he even promised the disabled people, a Special Adviser on Disability needs. Why not talk about that one too???

I cannot disrespect HRM Oba Akiolu and though his sentiments are registered, they are desperate. It is common knowledge that most of the lands in Lagos are linked to some ancestry of yours and so you have deep pocket ties with government. Never mind Sir, as promised, the role of Traditional Rulers will hv better significance under Jimi.

Let me promise you this fellow Lagosians, with Jimi, there will be even distribution of attention, amenities and infrastructure between the rich and the Poor. What is the essence of suspended bridge and flowers where the people can hardly eat or find shelter. Instead of setting up to help the poor, you use them to get votes, ignore them, bring people from outside Lagos to be commissioners and train them to go back as Governors. When the poor that voted request for succour, you give them 3k to GET OUT of the state.

Lagosians, the idea of aligning with the centre is so weak an argument that I know even Ambode considers a facade just to have something to say in an attempt to stop the WIND OF CHANGE.

its the condescending manner in which they say 'you igbos' that i find particularly irritating. can they all just BE QUIET.

the oba's statements were wrong...period. don't go any further like fani kayode to start telling us how you dated igbo women in the past and that makes you an igbo tribe lover.

its obvious the oba spoke non tinubu's behalf from the tone he adaopts here.

peopel will vot who they want on saturday..based on pesonal prefernce not on what all these 'owners of lagos' order them to do.

Well said Senator Ahmed Tinubu, but the truth is that Oba should withdraw or apologise for daring to throw igbos into Lagoon. Again, I wanna use this medium to tell Tinubu that igbos are not happy with Lagos state Govt ranging from harassment from Lstma,VIO, to Revenue collectors in d whole lagos state. Lastma in particular is a disaster to igbos, very partial and wicked. I beat traffic light @ Adetokunbo Ademola junction by law school 2yrs ago, 3 cars trailed me n Lastma pursued us with Okada and freed the other 2 cars n extorted 25,000 from me I swear. Becos they sighted d cash in my pocket. I cried out n one of them almost returned d money but d 2nd man said "na omo igbo" he get money. The rest were freed! It's height of tribalism n wickedness.
Fashola,no doubt has tried in security as long as am concerned but he too hated igbo. U tinubu did not hate igbos during ur regime n I like d way u fought federal Govt (Obj)when he seized lagos allocation. We igbos were with u! Am appealing to u to caution who ever that will be d nxt governor of lagos state plz. We need peace in lagos n not hatred from ur men. God bless u.

Onyebuchi Ememanka writes :

Let all these people shouting Igbos will not vote for APC please stop. Let them speak for themselves. They speak as if they have power to decide who every Igbo person must vote for. Come on, please speak for yourself and not for me. I have every right to decide whom I vote for likewise my family. I don't believe in bandwagon effect style of doing things. I have my conscience to direct my actions and in-actions. Please stop this trash of Igbos will not vote this and that person, simply say "I WILL NOT" and not "IGBOS WILL NOT". Who the hell are you to decide for the entire Igbos. In as much as I strongly condemn Oba's comments, but that has not changed my view about Ambode being a better candidate for the Lagos top job period. So enough of this IGBOS WILL and WILL NOT. How many people commenting here even have a PVC not to talk of voting. Akuko Ejiagha, Akuko Okoko

#Something to ponder on....

Dear Lagosian,

Yorubas are very decent and reasonable people. No tribe will entertain on their land what is going on in Lagos.

We all condemn in totality the statement of OBA AKIOLU!!!

But lets ask ourselves one important question, WHY IS OBA AKIOLU SO ANGRY WITH IGBOS?

My answers are:

1. "I WILL ELEVATE EZE NDIGBO TO THE STATUS OF OBA OF LAGOS" -
JIMI AGBAJE.

2. IGBO WILL DETERMINE WHO RULES LAGOS- IFEANYI UBAH

3. LAGOS IS NO MAN'S LAND.- IFEANYI UBAH DURING TAN CAMPAIGN.

4. IGBO DEVELOPED AND CONTROLS LAGOS- JIMI AGBAJE DURING GEJ CAMPAIGN IN AKWA IBOM

5. WE MUST PRODUCE THE NEXT DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF LAGOS- EZE NDIGBO

MY QUESTIONS TO IGBOS,

1. CAN OBI OF ONITHSA ACCEPT ALL THE ABOVE MENTIONED?

2. CAN EMIR OF KANO ACCEPT ....?

3. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER SINGLE TRIBE IN YOUR CABINET IN THE EAST?

4. CAN ANY TRIBE CLAIM ONITHSA OR ABA TO BE NO MAN'S LAND?

5. CAN OBI OF ONITHSA ACCEPT THE ELEVATION OF SARKIN HAUSA IN ONITHSA TO OBI STATUS?

My conclusion:

We have been living together as brothers for years in peace.

You must respect our tradition and institutions. Ifeanyi Ubah should stop jumping around Lagos beating drums of war!

GOD BLESS YORUBAS , IGBOS, HAUSA'S & THE MANY OTHER TRIBES

GOD BLESS NIGERIA!!!!🙏

@ power if you buy land for 400milliom in Lagos where did you get the money from is it not from the same Yorubaland and that is because it is a prosperous land, how many people who go to do business in the east can boast of such achievement no matter how much they try and this is because there is really nothing there, the only viable business i can talk about in the east is estate business and farming that is why they can kill their blood brother who dare to compete with them over land matters. Are there not Igbo's living in Kano and contributing meaningfully to the development of the place why cant they claim it's no man's land or ever try to raise their voice politically not to talk of trying to dictate the politically space there, they know it will be an overnight massacre for them so they act like cowards and mind their business.Even Abuja which they ought to claim to be no man's land they have not deemed it fit to undertake such clamor so that they too can contest as senator representing Abuja federal constituency.Ibo's always think they know while knowing nothing, knowledge of business does not translate to wisdom that is why they have continue to make themselves irrelevant within this entity called Nigeria, whether during Military or Civilian regime the just concluded election being a good case study, this outcome alone shows that they really have no one who can see ahead, settle down and think a right what a shame to handle such important national issue that dictates their collective well-being with mere emotion and instead of trying to correct this self inflicted restriction resulting from lack of vision,go back to the drawing board and see why they are always not getting it right politically and finding a lasting solution to it but instead of doing this they are busy trying to claim another man's land.I'll end my piece by praying for them that God will help them to see what their problem as a race are,and with humility seek the help of other race or region who could assist them in achieving their aspiration which political emancipation and relevance.

The Oba is not a card carrying member of APC. Y did he not hand picked his son who lost under APC. He stated categorically dat he is a relative of JK n didn't state his rship with Ambode ( it is possible dat he is not related to him). Therefore, where is JK's comment condemning his Uncle's speech

Anonymous said...

Even JK has refused to condemn his Uncle's speech

Gosh! One can't win with you lot! Damned if you do, damned if you don't! He clearly added "like others" but highlighted you guys to show no discrimination. Again zero culpability on your part! Why is some of your ire not directed towards your Chiefs who went to see the Oba in the first place? Why no insults towards them clearly heard clapping and cheering the Oba on during his ridiculous speech??! Don't let you judgement get clouded by pure revenge. Be rational. What is in the best interest of your people and Lagos (and really Nigeria) as a whole. If you feel it's Agbaje. Fine. If Ambode, fine. Don't get sidetracked by a politically irrelevant entity. #OneNigeria

One is free to vote as they want but my questionto you is: What do you think Bode George (a convicted felon) is to Jimi Agbaje? How do you think he won his primaries? Let's keep it real. JK pre-PDP, perhaps. Now? No. Thank you.

Thank you brother for your unbiased, rational attitude. #OneNigeria

Then you will also suffer because your people are so lazy to run a shop not to talk of a market.
