I just received a mail confirming that schools will re-open on Monday 22nd September, 2014. After reading it, I felt compelled to put on paper my thoughts since the announcement of same by the Federal Government. One thing that struck me is that I am yet to receive information about confirmed (not advised/suggested) nationwide measures that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our children from the Ebola virus upon resumption at school in two weeks." Continue...The reason for moving the resumption date forward by three weeks was given as “containment of the Ebola virus in Nigeria”. How does that statement stand in view of the present situation in Port Harcourt?
I returned to Lagos from a week’s trip to Abuja on Friday 5th September, 2014. The first issue I had, which I mentioned to an airport official was that just before boarding the planes (in Lagos and Abuja), passengers (adults and children) are given a rub-down. The officials checking our bodies were wearing gloves. However, the same gloves were worn while touching a good number of people.
The officials were protected, but how about the passengers being touched with the gloves that had been used to touch many others? On arrival at the Abuja airport, the temperature of every passenger was taken before entry was granted into the Federal Capital Territory. Of concern is that on departure from Abuja, this was not the case. Worse still, Lagos State that had the index case of Ebola welcomed us without any precautionary measures of any kind. We simply picked up our bags and walked into the city. With instances where infected people have traveled from one state to another, we should be worried.
It is understandable that we want our children educated, but we need to be reminded that we can only educate the healthy and living. Ebola virus in Nigeria is an unprecedented occurrence that has to be handled as such. “Better safe than sorry” should be the motto here. So far, we have been blessed in the manner that no child has contacted the disease. Children play indiscriminately with one another.
A child of what age can be guaranteed to identify the symptoms of the Ebola and keep away from it? How many times do we have to remind our children not to put their hands in their mouths and cover their mouths when they yawn, cough or sneeze? How do we tell them not to play with their friends as they are used to or not to show concern if one of them gets hurt and is bleeding? How can we really be sure that our 3 to 16 year olds would be safe from Ebola in a place where we cannot control who they come in contact with; a place where they share toilets, eat and play with others. How about our babies at crèche who we can’t even attempt to explain this to and who cannot verbalize their day at “school”?
I am the typical “Nigerian Mum”….ensuring my kids are on top of their school work, home work and leisure activities. At this time, I must pause and realize that prevention is the only option here as there is no cure! If the children have to stay home a little longer while this epidemic is eradicated or contained NATIONWIDE then so be it. If this implies a shorter Christmas break this year or just four weeks of Summer break next year to make up for the lost education time, so be it.
One thing I am sure no parent wants to deal with is the anxiety if a child comes home with a fever. We all know that at school, children love to share all things with one another from the water in their bottles to the flu. Then again, which parents want to have to take their child to the hospital these days?
If the doctor in Port Harcourt could go to work for some days after being infected with Ebola then we should be more concerned. This was an educated person, in fact someone who knew the consequences of his actions more than most, but he still put others at risk. Worst of all, these were colleagues and patients who could not tell from his demeanor that he was sick. They trusted him and could never have imagined that he would expose them to a deadly virus.
To our leaders, I ask what control measures against Ebola have been put in place in ALL schools, particularly the government and state schools? I visited a private school in Abuja and before we could go in, our temperatures where taken. We should remember that even if private schools are well catered for, the children of our drivers, domestic helps and “junior staff” attend public schools.
How many infrared thermometers have been distributed across these schools in Nigeria? Who would be responsible for taking the temperature of EVERYONE going into ALL schools? Since a symptom of Ebola is sudden fever, how often would the temperatures of students need to be taken in the course of the day? What Ebola emergency responses have been set up by location of ALL schools in Nigeria? What awareness has been carried out in the villages and remote areas of the country, where we have schools too? How will adherence to control measures (if and when they are in place) against Ebola in Nigerian schools be monitored, by whom and how frequently? What steep penalties have been put in place for schools that default?
As a parent I want to see action and not hear words! In a country where a nurse can flee quarantine and a primary contact with the index case can evade detection, with both of them traveling across state lines, I demand action from government before our children are asked to return to school. It’s not enough to ask “Ministries of Education in the 36 states of Nigeria to appoint desk officers on Ebola before resumption or that they should ensure that at least two staff in each school (public and private) are trained by appropriate health workers on how to handle any suspected case of Ebola, should in case there’s one or workers should embark on immediate sensitization of teaching and non-teaching staff in schools on preventive measures”, ALL STATE MINISTRIES OF EDUCATION and SCHOOLS (PUBLIC & PRIVATE) MUST be MANDATED and SUFFICENTLY EQUIPPED with ALL RESOURCES to ensure Ebola virus does not hit our children.
In Nigeria, it’s just schools that are closed. In some other African countries, communities are closed-in.
Now is the time to speak up, so that never happens to us. In my opinion, there are still too many unanswered questions and too many checks to be put in place before schools can resume. Parents, let’s preserve our lineage. Government, let’s preserve the future of Nigeria. Together, let’s preserve the lives of ALL Nigerian children.
I agree with what she said, I hope they listen
ReplyDeleteI agree
DeleteI agree with this statement wholeheartedly. As much as we would want our kids in school, we want them alive more. Thank you for your courage in making this statement
ReplyDeleteAll is well

BORN TO SHINE!!!!
We all are really concerned I just pray the best step is taken as regards this resumption date. It is well. Psalm 91:1-3. BishopDammy#
ReplyDeleteThe fed government still insist on opening on sept 22.. Don't know what their plans are. They had better think twice to save lives..!!
ReplyDeletevery inspiring
ReplyDeleteWe have decided not to let our daughter go to school till further notice. Better safe than sorry. Well written article.
Deletena tru talk be dis
ReplyDeleteWow true talk Nice one cheers***
ReplyDeletewell written, well said
ReplyDeleteShe has said it all. This was exactly the same question I asked when I heard that schools are re-opening on 22nd. What preventive measures have been taken to ensure the safety of these kids? But my country Nigeria and her leaders are always in a hurry not minding the risky situation at hand. Kudos for this write-up Madam.
ReplyDeleteI'm out. ***CATCH ME IF U CAN***
Goodmorning Linda,it's a nice read and I think she is right. Are we well prepared enough as a nation for managing such huge emergencies in health care? How many health personnel are stationed and ready to be monitoring and checking up with the risks of Ebola virus? Abeg, they should be well assured of preventive measures enough and review the decisions of schools opening too soon.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree less. Nice piece. Well said. Food for thought for our government. It is a pity we have a government or leaders who has little or no concern for us. Mother, God bless you for this article. God bless Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree less. Nice piece. Well said. Food for thought for our government. It is a pity we have a government or leaders who has little or no concern for us. Mother, God bless you for this article. God bless Nigeria.
ReplyDeletegood talk!!! hope the government will do something fast.
ReplyDeleteI agree with her 100 percent..Opening sch dis month is a risk and not a wise decision at all................................#KingOfKings
ReplyDeleteWell said ma, this has actually being my fear. One of my kids had a slight change in temperature, u need to have seen my fears that is with them being in doors so if school had resumed what would have been going on in my mind.
ReplyDeleteHmmm its not funny!my 2yr old girl had malaria nd after 2 days wid high temp.i began to think odawise. My children elts is of great importance than certificates right now. I fully suport d postponement motion.
Deletei totally agree with Efe,i personally will not send my kids to school now,we still have not contained the epidemic,we still have a long way to go.it is such a shame.
ReplyDeleteSupported! ! It bothers me too ... #Typical Nigerian Mum# Owu Onye di ndu na aga akwukwo!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the write-up. In as much as I want my children to resume school after the long holiday, my mind keeps boggling about this Ebola virus that can be easily transmitted amongst school children once a child catches it.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteMadam u read my mind,am nt a mom yet bt I hv a lot of little kids I play wit on daily basis, they can't even explain 2 d doctors wen they fall sick#federal government let no group of people pressure u#our nation our pride#sexypem
ReplyDeleteSo true,I support this
ReplyDeletebeta safe than sori..... prevention has always bn beta dan cure....... Only the living can be educated.......Jona be wise
ReplyDeleteSeconded
ReplyDeleteGood talk
ReplyDeleteToo many unanswered questions truly. My kids' school started sending homework so the children can revise. They have taken adequate measures as a private school, bt like this mum said, what abt the public schools? It's really sad
ReplyDeleteExactly. My neighbours kids attend private school, but theie maid attends public school and she takes care od the little ones wen she returns. What happens if she picks it up from public school
DeleteCold hard common sense. What those pressing for a quick re-opening fail to understand;is that if there is even one case of ebola in any school...disastrous doesn't even begin to cover what'll happen. As usual,we NEVER think things through. In this instance though;a "too little, too late" approach will entail the kind of sacrifices no one should EVER have to make.
ReplyDeleteWell articulated write up.I sincerely hope the government will see this write up and do the needful
ReplyDeletewow, this woman is too smart n she has said it all.I fear for my nieces n nephews, those kids can play
ReplyDeleteWell articulated write up.I sincerely hope the government will see this write up and do the needful
ReplyDeleteWell said I will not allow my Children to go to sch til Jan Ebola or not schs have bribed d govt cos of Loan Frm banks
ReplyDeleteGod bless u madam,i hope d government hear dis.i hv bn saying all these too.dis is evry mothers' word on dis case
ReplyDeleteGod bless you madam.....i'm a mother and i'm with you 100% on this issue! nice article also...
ReplyDeleteGod bless you ma! You have said it all.
ReplyDeleteHmmm she has said it all
ReplyDeletewell said. i hope d govt get to read this.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. The risks far outweigh any benefits to be gained from early resumption. Kids are kids and will always want to play, touch their friends, clean their sweat, etc. How will we protect from this reality.
ReplyDeleteHmmm lord av mercy....dont blame them their kids re all safe and cool outside the country.... common sense our leaders would still delibrate on it
ReplyDeleteLet this kids stay home till next year abeg
She s really a concerned mother nd i wish d govt shud listen 2 her cries. FAFA
ReplyDeleteI suggest dat d FG shud keep sch on pending till ebola is finaly wiped off to avoid spreadin d EVD.
ReplyDelete#skaler#
I honestly do not support the September 22nd school resumption date. Children are very vulnerable and they can be very reckless. How many times would a class teacher tell his/her pupil not to touch things or would they tell them not to interact with one another!?? Worst still, how do they intend to manage their Physical Health Education activities where students sweat out and they still get to touch one another. Do they want children to come home and their parents are scared of hugging them or when they fall sick, hospitals shut their doors against them even when it is not Ebola........so many questions left unanswered
ReplyDeletei tell you if i was a mother, my children would stay back at home for a whole session. nothing bad in them skipping one year from school. it won't hurt. this shit is too scary. please mothers dont expose your children to any form of risk because of the selfishness and greediness of our government. the minister of Education must have bribed the health minister to come spit out lies. i dont trust nigerians really.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!! i totally agree with her. besides why the rush to get them back to school. like she said u can only educate the healthy and the living.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!! i totally agree with her. besides why the rush to get them back to school. like she said u can only educate the healthy and the living.
ReplyDeleteMe I been don already make up my mind sha say my pikin no dey go anywhere yet
ReplyDeleteno ctrl measures put in place n they want skul to start? Na wao! No b to rush start na to see who.to teach
All has been said.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this mum. As mum's we need to raise one voice in support of the Nigerian Medical Association to allow the EVD saga clear completely before our children return to school.
ReplyDeleteApt and well said.
ReplyDeleteNice write up ma,I rilly appreciate we nid to create awareness about the safety of our children lives(our future)so am in support all school shuld be shot down until further notice..kus am also a mother nd I know aw its feel wen ur child temperature is high, not to talk of ebola deadly disease for that matter..#lets save our children, our hope nd future#
ReplyDeleteLike I said earlier, they were overzealous, that explains how they came about the resumption date.
ReplyDeleteAdults could at some reasonable level take care of themselves and ensure good hygiene, but same can't be said of those innocent children.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed.
~BONARIO~says so via NOKIA LUMIA
She couldn't have said it better. Our children are so vulnerable and whatever spreads through them, spreads like wild fire. All Nigerian mums where are thou?
ReplyDeleteFederal government shouldn't risk the lives of kids. i will advice Fed govt to please extend this resumption a bit for we all to know the outcome of this Ebola Virus. Cos kids are not safe. What measure have they put in place to protect these kids from this deadly virus? by dobis112@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWell said...
ReplyDeleteI seriously concur with her, FG should take drastic measure and ensure the safety of the children.
ReplyDeleteWell said...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful well said God bless you ma....
ReplyDeleteThese are the same points I was discussing with some other mothers yesterday. The government should wait and do the necessary first biko. God bless this woman for speaking our minds
ReplyDeleteSweet mother l beg tell them...there must be adequate measure before resumption fixed
ReplyDeleteWell said...
ReplyDeleteyes, well said, the government shd pls ensure that all cases of EBOLA is a thing of the past before our wards resumes.those in isolation centers shd be monitored as well .I pray to God that our kids will not contact dis virus INSHA ALLAH(AMIN)
ReplyDeletewell said!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGbamest!!. Making sense all d way.
ReplyDeleteThank you ma! Pls govt consider this well
ReplyDeleteI am totally in support of this, how I wish all moms all over naija will stick to this and refuse their kids going to school on the said date.
ReplyDeleteConfuse got
ReplyDeleteEFE SPOT ON ... THE OLD MEN TAKING THE DECISION HAVE ALL THEIR KIDS, GRAND-KIDS, GREAT GRAND KIDS.... ON N ON ABROAD. SO THEY DO NOT CARE. I KEEP ASKING IF THE PEOPLE IN NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT HAVE HUMAN BRAINS OR GOATS BRAIN.. BECAUSE THE WAY THEY REASON IS BEYOND ME.
ReplyDeleteTHE GLOVES USED TO TOUCH EVERY ONE IS AN EASY WAY TO TRANSFER THE VIRUS IF ITS FINDS ITS WAY ONTO THE GLOVE.
WHO IMPOSED THAT RULE SEF? I BELIEVE IT WAS SOME UNEDUCATED MUMU WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF SCIENCE. THAT BEING SAID, WITH THE 8 BILLION DONATED BY BILL GATES DISPOSABLE GLOVES CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE SO ONE GLOVE PER PERSON . TOUCH REMOVE DISPOSE FULL-STOP. OR A BODY SCREENING MACHINE BOUGHT. BUT WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS BODY SEARCH? THAT A MACHINE CANNOT DETECT.
WE ENJOY BEING AN ANCIENT COMMUNITY. BUT MY CURIOSITY STILL STANDS WHAT IS BEING GIVEN TO THE INFECTED TO KILL OFF THE ebola VIRUS ? IS IT ZMAPP OR ANOTHER DRUG. AM JUST CURIOUS. ALSO WHAT IS THE POSSIBILITY OF RECURRENCE? WELL AM JUST ASKING SHA OOO. ANYWAY LETS SEE IF SCHOOLS REOPEN OR NOT.
well written, i not fit play gamble with my pikin life.
ReplyDeleteWell written.I support you ma'aam. Though not yet a mother, but I have them cute nieces and nephews.God bless 9ja
ReplyDeleteWell said .
ReplyDeleteDis is a well written article, federal govt should see to d utmost safety of our children and citizens at large.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing to do is for the FG to postpone the resumption date. I doubt if they are gonna do that. They prefer continous fighting the Ebola virus so that they can have the chance to divert tax payers money in the name of fighting Ebola..rather than preventing it.Jona you and your cabinet members are all goats
ReplyDeletehmmmmmm, great write up, only hope the leaders get to read this and work on it. you forgot to mention our boarders by road..... people go in and out of Nigeria every day to other African countries, who monitors them? its time for us to fight for security in our land.
ReplyDeleteFantastic Write Up!!! I don't understand why this Minister of Health is so much in a hurry to declare that the Deadly Ebola has been contained. The last time he did so, 2 days Later the Port Harcourt Doctor Died from the Disease and Infected several contacts.
ReplyDeleteThe Nigerian Medical Association has declared that School Should remain Closed!
We need to band together to ensure that we do not become one of the other countries devastated by the disease.
Better safe than sorry. Politics should not be played with the lives and safety of our Children and the potential devastation of our Nation!!!
well said
ReplyDeletespot on!! I agree with her.
ReplyDeletei support her saying, government should not put the lives of our children in line. we the nigeria mom wants action not words.
ReplyDeletevery well said
ReplyDeleteGood article, maybe it was written before government announced there was no more confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteAnother point, I left Abuja to Delta this past Monday and before you proceed to security (just before you go to climb that long stairs " everybody's temperature was checked.
Anyways I think the resumption should be moved back to Oct.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree with u on this, better safe than sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks poster (concerned Nigerian mum). You spoke my mind and even beyond. Just like I said my child won't resume school on sept 22nd, I won't allow that, cos only a living/ healthy child attends school. Just like u said, there's nothing on ground to show that there is any preventive measures put on ground for these children when they return back to school. The two weeks extra initially was for 2 teachers or 2 non teaching staffs of each school in d federation to be trained should incase of any Ebola issues in schools, but I guess Nigeria with their non challancy has shoved that aside. With all the monies that has been put on ground by govt, individuals n organisations, I see no reason why they shouldn't go ahead and stick with the original plan. Trust Nigeria n half way of doing things, should anything, that's when you see people running helter skelter. What about those under surveillance, have they all being certified Ebola free? Pls those in authority should not joke with the lives of our children. Most of their children school abroad, hence they have nothing to fear, and I term that to be wickedness. RESUMPTION OF NUR/ PRY/ SEC SCHOOLS SHOULD BE POSTPONE, TILL ADEQUATE MEASURES ARE ON GROUND. Those under surveillance too should be cleared to avoid an EPIDEMIC....thats my take on this. FROM: Another concerned mum.
ReplyDeletewell said madam. God bless you.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you
ReplyDeleteGod bless you madam
ReplyDeleteYou are very right. Prevention is better than cure. Only if there is cure.
ReplyDeleteI must say that I'am really impressed with this write up. My thought exactly!
ReplyDeleteLast week I called up the head teacher of my kids school, asking her the measures that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our pupils when they eventually resume, she said they have attended seminars and they have thermometer to check temperature when they arrive school. The first question I asked her was; who checks the temperature of the school bus driver who probably leaves his house as early as 5:30am or the bus minder before they go to pick up our kids? Mind you the checks should be done before pick up and not when they arrive school, because these kids are from different homes and we do not know which family had contact with an ebola patient.
We all need to be patient at this time and pray this disease is contained because prevention is better than cure.
Kids usually contact flu from their friends in school. My nephew contacted mumps from school(boarding house) before we knew what was happening all the siblings came down with the disease, I'm sure other students in that hostel too would have infected their siblings as well.
What I'm I driving at, we(adult) can handle this situation more than kids, so we implore every parent to exercise patients because prevention is better than cure and in this case, there is NO KNOWN CURE. God help us.
de govt re pressured by some private schl owners to call off de brake bcos most of them run their schls on loan.i pray they listen.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but this woman is ignorant...the government too are ignorant....you close only schools?,she takes her children to church, they attend parties during this holiday and she herself as she's said travels so she's at risk of contaminating her children with Ebola..so why should the primary and secondary school students be deprived of education. it's totally ignorant.
ReplyDeleteI bet u aint a parent.. u go to church with ur children nd most likely stay with dem.. but do u stay with dem at school????.. Who is d ignorant one now...
DeleteUse ur brain !!!
In church the children stay in children's section. Away from their parents.
DeleteStudents deprived of education indeed. The ones that has been given the education what are most of them doing now? Professor of education, abeg go siddon jor. We are talking about the lives of these kids and you are here talking about education.
DeleteYou are very right. Prevention is better than cure if only the cure is even available.
ReplyDeleteSpot on! i'm a parent too, better late than sorry I say. We need action and implementation ,accurate measures and not just policies and mere words. We are all ready to cooperate and contribute in our own little way. Fed, State & Local government, Ministries of health, the P.T.A of all schools, state school boards, we should have meetings to put heads together wherever we are on preventive measures to take, as well as control and emergency response on this scourge before any resumption is fixed. The Government needs to be realistic for Christ's sake how can schools reopen in 2 weeks, that's the height of selfishness I say.
ReplyDeleteWell said. She's totally on point. I'd rather have my children at home in good health than in school and at risk. And besides WHO says a country is Ebola free when 42days go by without a new case surfacing. The last case discovered 2weeks of thereabouts, and the count should begin from then. I wonder why we are so lackadaisical about life impacting issues. If a child gets infected, it's a given that the mother will get it so also the siblings.
ReplyDeleteGOD has helped us thus far to curtail the spread in spite of our ill preparedness. Let us help ourselves by doing the only logical thing which is to maintain precautionary methods like keeping our children at home till we the indicated time.
And yes, I'm a working mother with 2 children, a 4year old and a 7month old. I will find a way to manage them at home. It will be stressful, but I'd rather be stressed and have my children alive and well than to put them at risk.
Well said, lets hope they listen! All parents should be ready to boycott this planned resumption. This Government is one of the most insensitive and wicked we ever had. The Chibok girls saga is a casein point, now we hear Private school owners have been lobbying Government what happens in State schools? Who will speak up for them to ensure that adequate measures are in Place?
ReplyDelete1Million likes for this write up! Madam, may God bless u with more wisdom!
ReplyDeleteMost of these teachers are so selfish and greedy! All they think abt is the monetry aspect and not abt the lives of these children! What measures hv schools put in place to fight the disease and what measures hv govt put in place in order for this children to be free frm this dreaded disesae! God help us cos am so scared for the lives of this kids resuming sept 22!
ReplyDeleteYou have well spoken. I agree with your statement. No mother will want her child to come back from school with Ebola hence putting the whole family in jeopardy. Kids are kids no matter what you tell them. I will prefer my children to loose one academic session and be alive. Does the minister have a child in school. NMA have spoken, teachers have spoken. Do we need God to come down and talk to our leaders. God save Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteVery well written ma'am...I 100% concur.
ReplyDeleteMadam...u spoke my mind..I pray they lesson as well..God bless us all
ReplyDeletevery much agree....we can not Jeopardize our children's life..because some private school want to make profit..even the public school too are not left out.since the crisis of EBOLA...what are the effort made by the federal Government to protect the children in public and private school...i think all the parent needs to wake up and stand for the life of this children.prevention is better than cure.
ReplyDeleteThese were my taughts exactly.....what measures are they making for the spread nd awareness of this virus... Well Independence Day is coming so their looking for ppl to match at the stadium for them lol
ReplyDeletePlease parents, I will advise we hold on with our kids at home rather than resuming school on September 22nd.
ReplyDeleteI personally have decided that my child is not returning to school until around end of October, when at least we can be sure all the people under surveillance have been certified free of the virus.
Mothers, Fathers... let us take the right step... Our kids are not returning to school YET!!!
Please ensure to buy their books and study materials... lets do the teaching for now!
Very true. lets start a revolution
ReplyDelete#keepourkidssafefromebola,
let it spread till they hear us.
I seconded this write up.....the Nigerian leaders should not handle Ebola issue slightly....no more playing of kites with our life enough is enough
ReplyDeleteDear Parents, i plead with us all to ensure this epidermic is contained totally and a vaccine that will care EBV is readily available to the common man is on ground before our children go back to school. These heartless lawmakers in conjuction with corrupt private school owners trust me have there children schooling Abroad hence the lack of conscience on their part. NO TO RESUMPTION FOR NOW!!

its really breaks my heart when I tend to see the kind of law they pass sumtyms. the basic truth is that they don't care about us because their children are not in public sch or rather Nigeria.as the Yoruba adage wil say, okele gbigbe pelu Alafia, o san ju ile tokun fun wara ati oyin lo. i will rather teach my son at home myself than for them to resume sch then be nursing ebola. God4bid.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with her considering that I have 3 kids all under 7yrs. *anya_o2003@yahoo.com*
ReplyDeletethank you ma
ReplyDeleteI concur #WORD
ReplyDeleteYes, we need to keep our children and indeed ourselves away from this deadly disease. It is said that the very last case in isolation has been discharged but a 21 days healthy nation clean bill pass is supposed to be observed. Please postpone the resumption date!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! I plan not to send my child to resume school till next year no matter what our unrealistic government decide on. The government take irrational decisions like It's a game of "hide&seek" rather than a serious issue with regards to life they can't create.May God pay them&their household back in their own coin so they know what average Nigerians face
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this woman. Govt please leave politics out of this, these are the future generations we are talking about.
ReplyDeleteWell written. Well done "mom". Over to the Federal and State government.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree.. Unfortunately some moron within the health ministry has probably give the contract of supplying hand samitizers in schools to one of his people and is getting a cut of the profit... Therefore the lives of millions of Nigerian children is no longer important. Shameful country. Nigeria has no future with the types if leaders we get lumbered with.
ReplyDeleteWell said. My children will stay home even if they have to lose a full year. Life is key for me.
ReplyDeleteYou have spoken my mind as a mother too.I am not ready to gamble with the lives of my kids.
ReplyDeleteVery well said ! God bless you madam ! i ma akwukwo pieces !
ReplyDeleteI'm not a parent yet, but since the new date was announced, I've been so concerned about the well being of all my nieces and nephews as well as children of my good friends. And I keep wondering when parents will revolt and speak up about on what measures the government has taken to protect these kids when they resume. I hope the appropriate people see this write up and more parent speak up before we are all sorry about the ugly out come afterwards. A concerned future mother!
ReplyDeleteWonderful write up, you said all that is in all mothers mind, but our country - do they care? most of them their children are not here, they are outside this country schooling, the private schools must have given them big fat envelopes. THERE IS GOD OOOOO!
ReplyDeleteOne thing we must know is that we love our children we will not let them. We want them to go to school and get the best education, yes - we want them alive.
Federal Government use your head not your envelope.

Good morning Linda and Libers,
ReplyDeleteEfe captured my sentiments spot on. As a mother of 2 toddlers, I almost became paranoid with fear when the first case of Ebola happened in Nigeria. I was just thanking God that kids were out of school because as she rightly pointed out, how do you tell children not to play with one another? How do you protect them??
When govt shifted the date of resumption to Oct 22, 2014, It made so much sense and I felt proud in my leaders for once in a long time.
What doesn't make sense is the sudden change back to September which I can't even begin to fathom why? I am beyond perplexed at the sudden shift but we parents should take action because our leaders don't have any of their wards in Nigerian schools so they can afford to play political games at our expense.
I can take anything but I draw the line @ ANYBODY playing "kalokalo" with my kids lives so my OWN action plan is to keep my kids home a little longer. I will advise any concerned parent to do same.
My piece

Well said madam. My own suggestions is , if the government stubbornly refuse to hearken to wise advice, let parents for once learn to act jointly and refuse to send their children to the schools until adequate facilities are in place phisically for prevention. Most of these government decision makers don't have their own children in Nigerian schools and the crooked among them are only interested in monetary gains from allocations and contracts to their supplier friends if there is a pandemic. As for me , none of my kids is resuming until I'm totally convinced the coast is clear.
ReplyDeleteLinda helpppppppppp.....am a cooper serving in Ogun state batch B.....i was posted to a public sch abeokuta wit no pay and accommodation...I won't be resuming if d federal Gov does not knw how to deal nd contain dis Ebola tin... cause I will by be dealing wit local nd public student nd hv to worry about ma safety most because dis people knw nothing about ebola... ma life is most precious to mi
ReplyDeleteI totally agree I for one is not sending ma daughter to school until am quite sure of the measures d govt are taking to eradicate dis disease I would totally blame any parents that sends his or her child to resume dis children are not the govt'kids but ur own child so you must protect them at all cots .until we Re sure dat Nigeria is free from Ebola the kids should stay home.(prevention is better dan cure)
ReplyDeleteWell said my dear, I just hope they will hear

ReplyDelete120 % in agreement. My children may not go to school till end of October or first week of November.During Babagida and Abacha era we were at home at times for more than one year,Today we are graduates and many of us are during very well in our chosen profession.WHY THE HASTE NIGERIA GOVERNMENT?IT BECAUSE YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT SCHOOLING IN NIGERIA.
ReplyDeleteWe talked about this today. Greedy private schools should consider children in public schools where hygienic conditions are poor. Come to think of it, if a child in Ajegunle whose Dad drives a big man in Ikoyi contracts the disease, Ebola will come to those who want to collect school fees at all cost.
ReplyDeleteVery well said madam. Nigeria mothers' rise up and challenge this madness. Refuse to send your children to school if they insist on resuming sept 22nd. If they sack NMA & NUT, they can't sack Nigerian mothers. It is only the living that gets educated. It's amazing how selfish and greedy people can be. God bless Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteMy child is not resuming any school till jan next year if federal government like dey shud resume today!! Smh selfish pple
ReplyDeleteIf i were in Nigeria i will keep my children at home till i am convinced the country if free from Ebola.
ReplyDeleteuhmmm gbam...ds is just d bitter truth
ReplyDeleteThis is all about money for next year's campaign. Its not about the well being of students, pupils, teachers or lectures. It all about money to be made for politicians and others that have schools. The break is draining the hell out of them, so they need for schools to resume in other to reimburse their pockets. Every good thing comes with a cost. The government is ready to sacrifice as many as possible for what they call the greater good. It's left to Nigerians, not just parents alone to look out for themselves. Government do not give a shit about you. All they care about is money coming in from all sectors. The educational sector seems to be setting them back on their agenda to raise money for next year bloody campaigns. Be wise and take precautions. Na who dey alive go go learn. Person wey don die no fit learn shit. Try not to sacrifice your family to Mr EVD.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are going no where this year until the vaccine is out. Period.
ReplyDeleteNice write. God bless u ma. As for me, my kids are going no where until this EVD is no more. Senseless govt.
ReplyDeleteCome sept.22nd,Nigerian schools will reopen and our children will resume and continue their studies without contracting Ebola. Enough of all these pessimism. Ebola is not yet so endemic in Nigeria that government should shut down the future of our children.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Efe Farinre, and God Bless her for this piece.
ReplyDeleteI have been agonizing over the federal government's decision about the school resumption date and I honestly felt it was pressure from parents that seem to have no idea the gravity of this Ebola scourge. Yet all I read and hear are parents of the same opinion as mine. So why is the federal government not postponing school resumption dates? I honestly think all parents should just ignore the resumption dates and keep our kids at home. If we all stand united in this, the federal government will have no option but to concede.
The writer @efefarinre has created #allittakesisonechild. Please spread the word.
ReplyDeleteThanks for speaking on behalf of many of the concerned mothers....
ReplyDeleteThats a scintillating and sensible comment from a more concerned mother...Million Kisses to all Loving Mothers...

ReplyDeleteEBOLA, IS NOW THE TOPIC AND HEADLINE EVERYDAY.SOMETHING REALLY ABSURDING HAPPENED COUPLE OF DAYS BACK.A GIRL, CAME INTO A PHARMACY IN MY AREA, AND WAS LIKE SHE JUST NOTICED THIS SUDDEN BLEEDING ON HER LEFT LEG.SO, SHE WENT AND MET THE NURSE THAT IS WORKING IN THE PHARMACY AND TOLD THE NURSE THAT THIS BLEEDING IS STRANGE TO HER AND SHE NEEDS TREATMENT.THEN THE NURSE SCREAMED AND TOLD THE GIRL THAT THIS IS A SIGN OF EBOLA, AND CUSTOMERS UPON HEARING THAT TOOK TO THEIR HEELS AND EVERYBODY WITHIN THE PHARMACY BUILDING RAN.SO THE NURSE, PICKED UP HER PHONE AND INFORMED THEIR MANGER, THAT THEY HAVE A PATIENT WITH EBOLA, CASE IN THE OFFICE AND THE MANAGER ORDERED THAT THE GIRL BE COMMANDED TO LEAVE THE PHARMACY HALL..SO, THIS ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF SOME SECURITY PERSONNELS THAT WAS ON PATROL.SO THEY STOPPED THINKING THAT THEY WAS ROBBERY,INCIDENCE GOING ON.BECAUSE THEY SAW THE WAY PEOPLE WERE RUNNING WITHOUT KNOWING THAT A NURSE CONCLUDED THAT A PATIENT THAT CAME FOR TREATING IS HAVING EBOLA, ALL BECAUSE SHE WAS BLEEDING..THE GIRL WAS EMBARRASSED.EVEN THE SECURITY PERSONNELS THAT CAME AROUND DID NOT HAVE THE BOLDNESS TO CONFRONT THE GIRL, WHEN SHE WAS LEAVING TO ACTUALLY CONFIRM FROM HER IF SHE IS HAVING EBOLA.THIS IS TRUE LIFE STORY..IT HAPPENED WITHIN MY VICINITY,JUS COUPLE OF DAYS BACK..BUT I CAN NOT MENTION THE AREA FOR SOME SECURITY REASONS..BECAUSE, THE SECURITY AGENTS WILL SOON COME FOR THE NURSE THAT INSTIGATED THE WHOLE DRAMA..
I like the part that says CONFIRMED .....they said they would educate schools on EVD matters and prevention. Have they?
ReplyDeleteSchools will resume 22nd Sept, nothing can change it. PERIOD.
ReplyDeleteDear Efe, every worry and concern you have is the same you'd have when you go to work and allow your children have a life. Life goes on, Ebola or no Ebola. The only solution is to call on our higher powers (God, Allah). If living a breathing is a threat, why not just life enough to be satisfied if life happens to turn on us.
ReplyDeleteProtection is important but it is still not 100% sure. Nothing is sure. So live above the fear!
I am so infuriated and angry at this useless post of this woman. I wonder what level of education or exposure she has. More annoying are this foolish comments. Are you people so shallow in your thinking dat u don't think round at all? No wonder this country may not make it. I am a father too and I love my kids enough to die for them without a second thought. What is problem with resuming schools? Why do you not ask the govt to close down higher institutions too? Why do you not ask your children not to go to church/mosque again? Why do u urself still go to the market? Why do you still enter public transport? Why do still let ur children play within the neighbourhood? RUBBISH. Ur children may not get ebola in school and still get it somewhere else. It makes no sense to stop schools from resuming because of irrational fear and illogical thinking. Just pray and hope to God it doesn't last and teach ur children what they need to know. Believe it or not, u can't shut ur children in foreva even if u don't allow dem in school, it makes no difference. Use ur sixth sense
ReplyDeleteI do hope you know the same reasoning means no one supporting this should go to work, travel, go to church or even banks. Stay locked up at home, or is your life less important than your kids.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, you do not have to send your child to school anyway. Let the ones that hate their children send their own to school and you who's love is too much can keep them safe.
It is not by staying at home that will keep you from infection. You do your best and leave the rest to God.
I agreed with this super mom writer.
ReplyDeleteTell our leaders fear God,everything is not money, private organisations are behind this just because of money.I am a teacher and I know what I'm saying.
Fine my son is attending good school having care but still he loves playing with kids in the church and around, intact I have paid the fee in advance but still I can't let my child go because he is my life,I'm begging God for more.
How can we care for these kids, how many schools can follow the instructions for just a week.
What I just want us to remember is that,God loves children and it will be bitter to shed their blood, don't let us face the judgement of God. Let these children be pls.
Ask those proprietor/as that are complaining how much they pay their staff, they eat the money alone, travel aboard, buy very expensive wears and ignore their staff, they can't pay a teacher just one child fee as salary, why the noise now, what of the profit they have been gather since many years.
I beg TANBA DASILE TAN,APAA WON KONI KA OOO.
All moms shout now oooo

Good write-up.But is it only in school that children come together.Let the government do what they can do. Leave the rest to God.
ReplyDeletechildren wouldn't be the only ones to be protected. what about the parents and teachers? Govt should put all measures in places where people gathers; churches, mosques, etc.
ReplyDeleteSchool at thıs tıme? It can not happen! My chıldren have not even gone to church sınce, we do that at home. For me and my famıly school hopefully resumes ın January 2015. So long as Ebola has been well contaıned. Goverment ıs defınıtely thınkıng about money only.
ReplyDeleteNo to resumptıon of schools!!!
ReplyDeleteNo school resumptıon you people want to kıll chıldren, greedy Nıgerıans!
ReplyDeleteYOU NEED TO VISIT YOUR CHILDREN IN SCHOOL before sayıng open schools! Stay and observe.
ReplyDeleteThe lady has said it all, I couldn't say it better myself. I have a child whose empathy is a joy to see in an uncaring world. Am I to advise him to become callous and unfeeling to his friends and colleague. Even if I do, would he listen?
ReplyDeleteMy advise to parents: ignore the FG . They can ask schools to resume they can't force us to bring our children. They have their agenda, we have ours: keeping our children alive. I don't plan to send my son to (boarding ) school cine 22nd. Let the FG do its worst!
Excellent Words. Its very encouraging for all of us. I am totally agree with her points.
