FG orders indefinite suspension of Resident Doctors in Teaching Hospitals

Resident Doctors in Nigerian Teaching Hospitals have been suspended by the Federal Government starting yesterday August 13th. According to a letter sent out by the Permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, the indefinite suspension is meant to help the Federal Govt 'appraise the challenges facing the health sector'.

Health sector in Nigeria is finally collapsing @ a time when d masses need it d most. Federal government can afford to suspend residency be cos when the politicians need medical care they travel to the best hospital in d world but when d common person needs it, he dies cos d health care system in Nigeria had long collapsed. At a time Ebola is killing Nigerians, d government should be looking for a way to resolve d issues they ve with doctors, but instead they do d worst. If der is no residency, der will be no training of medical students anymore and Nigeria will go back to a country dt do not ve Medical doctors. All a doctor does is trying to save lives but y d hate on doctors. Nigeria, I weep for d future

In a country where u have 1 doctor to about 4000 ppl, the president decides to make such a costly decision. It's obvious these politicians do not have any plans for the masses cos this will definitely lead to another mass exodus of medical professionals. If u don't need ur doctors, other countries do. I won't be surprised if saudi arabia starts advertising this month. If we do not insist that a law be passed that restricts public office holders from travelling abroad for medical care, then health care in Nigeria is definitely in a morbid state and it will die soon.

Anonymous said...

@glowy. Hope u also leave in canada like badoo o. If not, this ur president's decision will affect u or ur relative at a point in time.

Anonymous said...

Are u in primary school? Hope u know that it is not just doctors that are on strike. It's a reflection of the failure of this administration and they just made things worse with this decision. Segun, the only way this does not affect u or someone u know is if u leave abroad.

Anonymous said...

My thoughts exactly. This country now constantly remind us that it is unrewarding to go to school. I don't see anyone aspiring to go to medical school after dis decision. I think I'll buy a ball or a mic.

Retards how many of u have gone to govt/general hospitals and see how they treat patients like rags and they loose uncountable no of their patients daily as a result of negligence and greed some of them just flash their dirty faces @ the govt hospital by 11 and leave @ 12 to their private practice as against 8am to 6pm they are meant to work before nyt shit comes thereby shorting govt and tax payers. Are u aware that instead these doctors will treat u when u consult them in the govt hospital they will be marketing u to come over to their private practice and get better care Come on Is that not Sabotage???

All health professional residency should be sponsored not just the residency of physicians alone.

Doctors should pay for their studies like the other health professionals.

Blessing dearie, a medical doctor would never parade the streets in ward coats. They are called WARD COATS for crying out loud! Those who do that are usually the paramedics- lab scientists, record officers and the likes but you will never know because they pass themselves off as docs! So smh

Anonymous said...

Shame! A big shame on what is supposed to be called government/ leadership in this nation. This is worse that cutting off the nose to spite the face! It's as good as shutting down universities because the educational system is failing. It's like firing the police/military because there is insecurity in the land. It's like saying because we have poor leaders, all of them should be impeached at the same time, afterall, we have to 'assess the challenges of leadership'. I thought advisers were paid heavily to think about the good of Nigerians, but clearly, from their output, one can clearly see that all they care for is themselves. At this rate, Nigeria has no future. When u casualise a doctor, who takes responsibility for the 'continued medical education' that has come to become a pre-requisite for annual re-registration all over the world? Who trains the students...all u want to have is head knowledge with no clinical practice?

Our leaders do not think of the future......every man for himself, God for us all!!!

Your ignorance really stinks...the government hospitals are ill equipped likewise those private hospitals.
If you are mentally stable you would realise this singular action just moved you from frying pan.to fire... There are not enough doctors in Nigeria and 16000 thousand doctors out of the 30000 are sacked and you are happy the government just sabotaged the future.of health in this country

.when next you and other Nigerians have reasons to require specialist care you would be sent to places like Indian even Togo by those doctors that choose to stay behind.....because then these ancient crop of consultants would be long dead and they succeeded in training no one....and please dont think doctors from other countries would come down to Nigeria to work in these useless country for peanuts in a currency that is so useless.

Please I'm a doctor and I know Nigerians thanks to poverty can't even take care of themselves most Nigerians are poor and malnourished presenting to the hospital late and they expect a miracle in a poor medical setting

orela said...

Hmmmmm.....and you expect the doctor that paid for his residency to treat your malnourished self for free because medicine is charity... When you are given bills you lament..... Jesus wept

NMA response to sack of resident doctorsConfirmed now that the FGN has released a lettrer to the ministry of
health directing it to
Suspend d residency programme
CMDs to sack all resident with 1 month salary in lieu
Board to ensure hospital runs with locus medical officers renewable 6monthly
Consultants are left out
Divide and RULE
Casual ideation of medical profession

Way forward
1. EDM immediately
2. NMA directs MDCAN to embark on strike over unconstitutional sack of
our students and stoppage of specialization in the nation.( the court
case in question do not affect these matter)
3. NMA direct MDCN to withdraw training of medical students
4. NMA directs all doctors not to pick up any locus job and enforce it
via picketing
5. Any CMD that enforces the sack is black listed
6. Group practice to Cather for our needs to be set up.And d battle line is drawn

Anonymous said...

Let's note dat Jonathan just single handedly destroyed d health sector in Naija. If MDCAN joins in dis strike den private hospitals wud have to shot down. Also dis means dere ll be no more training of medical students as all medical schools ll be shot down.Make I sidon dey watch.Jonathan Jonathan Jonathan.u just lost d 2015 elections without contesting.heheheheheehhehe

Dear Libbers,
If you put aside your hatred of doctors, for whatever reason, for a moment, and THINK... AND EVEN GET SOME BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE ...
1. Residency program is the period, after qualifying as a medical doctor, during which SPECIALIST TRAINING, to become a gynaecologist, or paediatrician, physician (internist), oncologist, general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeon, pathologist, radiologist, cardiologist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, to name a few specialties, occurs.
2. The teaching hospitals and many general hospitals and federal medical centres where you can see a specialist run residency training as a service to the nation PLUS a source of additional manpower to provide service.
3. Other countries are striving to either establish residency training or strengthen existing programs because the doctor with just the MBBS degree only pRovides a level of competence that cannot treat all complicated disorders.
4. It's like suspending PHD degrees to appraise the education sector?..unfortunately, the ripple effect involves human lives. It is a CRAZY DECISION. FULL STOP.

Unknown said...

The most worst n stupid decision ever by joe.it was 1 doctor to 4000 patients bfor now.now it's going to b worst cos the colsultate don't do d work,d residential doctors do.its d common man dat would suffer cos wen d so called big men fall ill,evn for headache, dey r flown out.....

My contribution is not directly about the strike but about institutions saddled with the responsibility of residency trainihg. There are 3 postgraduate medidal colleges, two are international, west african college of surgeons and west african college of physicians owned by west african nations. The headquarters of these colleges are in Lagos. By Law of the Federation, the nation has its own National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, located in Ijanikin, Lagos. These 3 Colleges
were established to oversee training of resident doctors to become specialists.
I am only giving information to readers to guide their contributions. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Spot on! Those doctors should be replaced immediately. There are countless numbers of willing and more dedicated medical personnel who can replace them. Come to think of it; in whose interest have they been on strike? What about the lives of friends and loved ones (including my beloved cousin) that have been lost as a result of their refusal to attend to patients? If or after they may have achieved their strike-aims, of what benefit or advantage will it be to the families of the bereaved? Doctors/medical personnel should not compare themselves with lecturers and others who can go on strike at a moment's notice. They must not forget that they swore to protect and save lives; hence, there are others better ways to lobby or drive home their points and demands. I totally support this move by the Federal Government.
