Lagos state govt give reasons for the serious flood in Lekki, VI, Ikoyi, Lagos Island

The Lagos state government has released a statement on the flood that ravaged some parts of the state particularly Lekki, VI and Lagos Island. According to the statement, blocked drainages caused by indiscriminate dumping of refuse is a major cause of the flood. The statement also adds that the Lagoon which is supposed to receive all the rain water is currently swollen. Read the statement after the cut...

Lagos State Government on Sunday urged residents to remain calm and vigilant in the wake of the torrential rain experienced in the State in the last few days. State’s Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, who spoke after inspecting areas affected by the flood in the State, allayed fears of residents, assuring that the Government has activated its emergency response system to respond efficiently where necessary. He said most of the flooding would recede after a period of time, attributing the cause to the high tide of the lagoon, slowing down the flow of rainfall water from drainage channels.

"We are on top of the situation. The Government is concerned by the recent occurrence of flooding in some parts of Victoria Island, Lekki, Oniru and its environs and our emergency lines 112 and 767 are open 24/7 for residents to report any emergency situation," he said.

But more importantly, the Commissioner urged residents in the habit of dumping refuse indiscriminately especially in drainage channels to stop forthwith, saying that engaging in such does not only portend health hazards, but could also lead to loss of lives and property. He said dumping refuse in drainages meant to take flood water to the lagoon, blocks such channels and as such had dire consequences that could lead to loss of lives and properties.

Adejare also expressed concerns that despite the vigorous campaign by the Government on the dangers of dumping refuse indiscriminately, some people still engage in such act.

“The lagoon is swollen up, there is high tide, so it would lock on our outfalls, the water would not recede or go into the lagoon as fast as it used to be, so that’s one of the main reason why we are having flooding all over the place and coupled with our own man made problems such as people blocking the drainage channels, people even building on drainage channels, that’s what has also been causing all these problems.

“That is a criminal thing to do, it is not good, their actions can lead to loss of lives and definitely to damage of properties, so they should stop it because it would affect some people adversely. You do not need to dump refuse in drainages, eventually we would come to pick them up and with our improved services through the reforms that we are carrying out, there would not be anything like that, we would be evacuating solid waste faster than we have done,” Adejare said. He said that the Government was concerned about the safety of residents, hence the continuous call on those living in flood-prone areas to relocate temporarily pending when the rain recedes.

“Like we have been telling them, if the rain still persist, please don’t go out of your homes, except you are living by the coast or by the low line. If you are one of those, you have to move upland, move away from the coast until the rain recedes. But if you are living upland and it’s raining persistently and it’s not necessary or compulsory for you to go out, please stay indoors. If you also have contact with flood water, wash your hands always, whatever has been touched by the flood water should not be eaten, it’s important,” Adejare said.

The Commissioner also assured residents that the ongoing reforms in the environment sector through the Cleaner Lagos Initiative would evolve a viable solid waste management system which would make the State cleaner and healthy for residents.

“This is a transition period, most importantly it’s not that the reforms have taken so long, you need to plan very well so that you don’t plan to fail. We are making sure that when we start, we don’t hope to fail, we hope to give our people a world class service in solid waste management, that’s what we are planning for and we need to take our time to do that and give Lagosians good service. It would commence, it would succeed and it would give us a better way of managing our solid waste here”, he said. He however urged residents to continue to maintain a high level of cleanliness, especially in disposing their refuse, while assuring that the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration would not relent in its efforts until it achieves a cleaner Lagos.

“I want to tell our people, no pain, no gain. To embark on any kind of reform is always very tedious, as a government the priority is to see these reforms through and to make our people live better. Our refuse should not be a disgrace to us, it should be a resource and that’s what we intend to pursue,” Adejare said.

Coman see how the reason long. What reason ehn? You pursue water, water coman dey pursue you now you dey blame 'indiscriminate' ah this oyinbo word hard me to pronounce o. The first thing you would have done was to get prepared for the rains clearing all the drainage and creating awareness since we are known to be dumping rubbish and littering the whole place. Next time do the needful thing. You think it's easy to govern.

blocked drainage is always the culprits according to them. they should realize that lagos

island, lekki and v.i are on flood plains that are bound to get flooded when the rainfall exceeds a certain level, the whole idea that we can always blame it on blocked drainage is getting old. the system needs a complete over-haul.

Say what? Been living here since 2002, and it has always been like this every year. Always finding what to blame it on instead of putin a lasting solution to it, I'm sure next year, u wil stil blame it on wrong dumps of refuse and lagoon swells. I remember those day in jakande estate, oh my word, it's well. To even hear him say move out as if he he gave them money to move or provided a place, this people shaa.....

But what's the reason for the flood at Awoyaya where there is no drainage system and the roads are bad?

Why is the lagoon swollen? Is the the first time the rains have fallen like this? aside the blocked channels, the government keeps approving the sandfilling of the lagoon for the rich to build on. This is the major reason why the water isn't receding fast enough. The lagoon is becoming smaller and since it has been blocked then water will definitely remain on land

the reason is that they are pushing the lagoon to the wall. I pray Lekki is not finally consumed by the lagoon soon. the Lekki trade zone and maroko sand fill are part of the probs. doing omo onile with the lagoon. isokay. continue u hear. I wonder how those in banana island too managed to leave the area. govt should do something fast so we don't all end up becoming casualties of the flood. later now dt man in dark glasses will start asking for money to Mae sacrifice to the yemojas. it is well.

Why won't the lagoon be swollen when sandfilling is taking place daily.

LASG must start telling Residents of the State the truth about flood being witnessed in parts of Lagos State especially in highbrow areas like Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki etc. The honest truth is that LASG is currently sand filling the Iyana Oworo end of the Lagoon up to Ogudu swamp to put up another housing project for the rich few. These swampy areas traditionally serve as flood plains for the lagoon water whenever it over flows during rainy season or in the words of the Commissioner "whenever it is swollen". I believe that no Environmental Impact Assessment was carried before the commencement of these land reclamation exercises. Add this to the ilubirin land reclamation exercise of the previous administration. All the investments and buildings in Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki are in jeopardy as long as LASG continue to artificially raise the sea level at Iyana Oworo and Ogugu end of the Lagoon. Lagosians need to know that the foundation of the 3rd mainland bridge is now being compromised by the thoughtless excavation of the sand under it; near it; around it and surrounding it by LASG and her contractors.
Lagosians must call LASG to order. Affirmative action against sand mining/dredging without Environmental Impact Assessment Report must cease immediately! Lagosians whose properties were affected by the flood should consider a class action against the government and the contractors. More importantly, they must seek an injuction to restrain further land reclamation at the expense of their properties.

The man is talking bullshit. How many drainage channels, gutters, canals did he clean out/dredge before the start of the rains? Too much indiscriminate sand filling is also the culprit. The whole of Lekki phase 2, Abijan GRA and parts of Lekki phase 1 have not been developed and they are sandfilling the lagoon and ocean to take more land for big guns to live in. The areas that people are selling/trading- there is insufficient garbage disposal. Come to the new Freedom Way in Lekki that leads to Orange Island and see people trading and throwing their junk into the canal. It's the same everywhere. If Lagos State allows street trading they should provide sufficient garbage disposal to clean the mess the traders leave behind

STOP INDISCRIMINATE SAND FILLING Lagos State . Eko Atlantic city is the cause of the flood at Jakande etc side

Ambode left us under water and went for wedding at Abeokuta.

Rubbish, Lagos has failed to prepare for the rains in the last two years. The budget for clearing the canals have been cut. Canals are filled with silt and water hysen stopping the free flow of flood water. Governor Ambode, please up your sleeve once more and govern.

This simply means the govt. won't fixed it.The annoying thing is this simply means lekki and v.i residents will only experience this again next year. This is not only about the drainage system but other contingency plans put in place when drainage collection points or lagoons overflow. Amsterdam and Buenos Aires(Argentina) have similar solutions put in place to combat flooding despite the fact these places are slightly above sea level.Buenos Aires drainage systems even has IT sensors to monitor water levels at various points.

Like the its name goes Victoria Island...which means its surrounded by water meaning flood is bound to occur Especially during excessive raining season we are experiencing now...they should be thankful it might have been worst.
