Don’t detain suspects while carrying out your investigation- Arase warns policemen

The Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase yesterday warned operatives of the Edo State‎ Police Command to avoid detaining suspects indefinitely while still conducting their investigation on a case. Arase who gave the warning while addressing officers and men of the Command during an official visit to the state, also frowned at operatives of the Force interfering in civil offences relating to land matters and the criminalisation of such matters.

According to him, the police must abide by the Nigerian constitution
“I don’t expect most of you to bring people into our facility and detain‎ them indefinitely while you are shopping for evidence. You must be able to have evidence before you bring them into our facility. You cannot abridge the fundamental rights of Nigerians; you cannot treat them as if they are people who have been conquered. You must respect these rights,” he said.
According to PM News, the IGP said police officers must not also get involved in land matters as only civil courts have the constitutional power to allocate land and get fully involved where there are disputes.

  19. I've heard we've got intelligent police men, so true to show for.......... BUT@ARASE PLEASE can I know why we only get to know our right if it involves the rich people in these country ,@ Festac police station the one right by the first gate, I'm sure they can't remember these case of them arresting a 16year old gyal last 6years December 15 for nothing she knows about throwing her into the cell no investigation nothing, threatening to kill her if she doesn't confess because the father of the person who detained her was a rich man like they say...... Azubuike Aghawana abaja arrested miss Gloria because he thinks she threatened him.... To cut the story short, after they decided to see the csse one of the police men was sent to the bank without the suspect who they've kept there for more than 24 hours, was caught drinking beer and saying na money we need not knowing a relative of the girl was in the restaurant , meaning they did it all for money, they didn't care about the underage in their cell and so On and on, I'm sure they didn't even file the case cos how it ended was with the glory of God and the help of family and friends ..... Arase check your boys I bet some of them don't even know the law themselves or maybe it's corruption.... #protectusnotkillus

  24. I hope they are listening. This is a huge issue in our police and will go along way to transform and put them on right track.
I also wanna call on Arase to go beyond talking and dishing instruction. See to the implementation. Implementation is a major key here!!! Most times it's easier said than done.
Thanks anyway for trying to do things differently
