Photos: Anger, condemnation as Enugu traditional ruler accuses his subjects of witchcraft

Report by lawyer and blogger, Chukwudi Iwuchukwu. Read below...
The story sounds like a fairy tale or a Nollywood Epic Movie script but the story is real and happened in Unadu community in Enugu State.
The traditional ruler of Unadu community In Nsukka Enugu State a retired police officer, Barnabas Agbaji who allegedly forced himself to become the Igwe of the town recently elevated the act of wickedness by arresting" two of his subjects Remigus Nwa Ikeagwu and Silas Ameh, arbitrarily accused them of witchcraft, convicted the accused of being guilty of the offence of Witchcraft, hung a tire around their necks, tied fresh palm fronds all over their bodies and paraded them around the community as common criminals!!
According to a source in the community, the Traditional Ruler has been ruling the town with high handedness and impunity, leaving his subjects in fear and misery, boasting that nothing will happen to him because of his Influence in Enugu state Government.

Tension is already running high in the community and from my investigation, his people are spoiling for wall threatening Fire and brimstone if appropriate action is not taken against the ex-policeman now.

Traditional Ruler and some of his subjects are calling for his dethronement because his recent bizarre action on his subjects is the height of what they can tolerate

The question is: During his service years in the Nigerian police, did this man ever arrest and successfully prosecute anyone for practicing witchcraft? Under which law did he do this?

  71. Linda, I sent you an email with a story like this last year about my brother in Osisioma Ngwa who was accused of witch craft and lynched by the village youths. On the process, my dear brother lost his eyes and the doctored in teaching hospital asked for 50k for the eye operation. I also put his number in the email for confirmation. At the end my brother couldn't go because of money. It is exactly a case like this, he was humiliated this way and sent away, he is still banished without justice till today, begging for food. what a world.

  73. lol. I don't know, but what's the story here? besides what I just read sounds funny. where did the igwe see the proof of witchcraft or his he tryna pay em for something else? well that's none of ny business.

    JUST MY OPINION...

  74. This is just fabrication by unpatriotic indigenes on Igwe Barnabas Agbaji, and these group of people spreading information that may cause chaos should stop. These case of witchcraft was reported to the igwe by their children and relations, threatening to kill those involved in this act of witchcraft but the igwe refused their request and with leniency passed a judgment after investigation that these people be paraded at the market square and allowed to go without torture as tradition demands. To serve as deterrent to others and these people are alive and in their different houses. WHY CAN SOMEONE SAY JUNGLE JUSTICE? If not after the action of igwe Barnabas Agbaji, most of the youths have stopped coming home and those at home has resorted to OK Ada riding as their major jobs. I want to state here categorically that Igwe Barnabas is a God- sent to Unadu community and since his assumption to office we the Unadu youths have been enjoying peace and serenity in the community.

  75. Hope the traditional ruler is not innocently accused.what happened was initiated by relatives and friends of the victims as such actions cannot take place without the support of close relatives.
My advice is for the community to change from their premodial thinking and embrace God.
