Is Etcetera a problem? - written by Onyeka Ibeanusi

Writer and social commentator, Onyeka Ibeanusi answers the question y'all are beginning to ask, is Etcetera good or bad for the entertainment industry? His article below...
Many people felt the rude awakening to the presence and existence of singer cum writer Etcetera. I got to know about Etcetera in 2008 when I was still in Uniben. I remember a guitarist friend of mine saying, "Dis guy hold guitar like who no sabi play am."
Then I heard his songs and saw his videos. The videos were nice at that time and Etcetera was on his way to becoming the male version of Asa. I watched some other videos from him years later but unfortunately, Nigerians hardly patronise his genre of music and Etcetera disappeared.
Now Etcetera is back as a writer and a columnist hitting Nigerian celebrities harder than the US is hitting ISIS and to be candid, the dude is good!

Maybe somebody should have signed Etcetera and helped him reach the height of his music career. Perhaps Dj's, Vj's and OAP's shouldn't have charged him too much and spare everyone this vocal warfare penned down in computer fonts. Now Etcetera is here to piss everybody off.

I remember when Tiwa Savage described him as 'coma' or 'full stop' and now Freeze is after him after making very creative and epic statement like, "The light skin radio presenter who does the evening show on that Cool station on the island.’
‘Honey can I turn off the AC before I freeze?"

Charles Novia was enough trouble for Nigerian entertainers and now Etcetera joins him. Having both of them around is like fielding Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi at the same time in the same team.

Maybe Etcetera should have been a rapper, because the punch lines this guy drops is just too much to ignore. Sometimes I imagine him surfing the internet and laughing hard at people's reactions and comments whenever ever he writes.

To save Nigerian celebs from the hands of this creative terrorist, I think we should call Don Jazzy to sign him with the responsibility of releasing 5 albums in 3 years, maybe we will all have peace by then but since I don't have that power or the ability to 'retract', 'debunk' or 'condemn' anyone's opinion, I will just sit back and wait for his next article.

    5. Come to think about it. Somebody need to checkmate the stupid excesses of our so called celebrities and since journalists are too weak or corrupt to do it, these guy has offered himself the job and I believe he is doing a great job only dt I don't know if he gets paid. For me, he should be writing instead of singing even though I never heard his music before.

    1. To me, ETC has no problem, neither is he a problem to anybody. He is simply a critic and every human society should have critics. The essence of criticism is not to destroy but to build through constructive critiquing which ETC is doing at the moment. The result is to reform and draw more effort from those he criticised.

  52. I completely disagree with the writer, Nigerians are yet to understand the dynamism of celebrity attainment. Media scrutiny is what you have to deal with once you chose that path. I admire Ecetera writings and I think they are borne out of sheer ingenuity. He simply pens down most of the things we whisper but afraid to voice in order to be ' correct'. Irrespective of how you look at it, he is a good writer, and yes, he should continue. Such people are needed for the industry to be on their tippy toes and thrive....

  77. I totally agree with etcetera's article. We the "dancing generation" turn a blind eye to all that is happening around us. Your lyrics says a lot about your ideologies and what you can do with yourself and the people around you. Make some sense people, sometimes we need to go home and reflect, Nigerian music hardly provides us with that. With the exception of 1% of total Nigerian artistes, the only genre we have is shouting......bla bla bla. It never ends.

  81. Nigerians self. You need both praise me and critics. Makes for a balanced media. When you are not afraid of being critisized there is the tendency to not seek higher achievements and also a tendency to be part of a race to the bottom. Cerritos is healthy and if you can't stomach it don't be in the public eye. Et cetera to me is like the Internet Lou Dobbs, Bill O'Reilly, Rachel maddow or piers morgan. Grow Up Nigerians. It can't be Linda showcasing your jewelry and happiness alk the time. Some one needs to write provocative stuff every now and then to keep you in line.

  83. In as much as I agree that etcetera crosses boundaries sometimes, I'd also like to point out that most of us,Nigerians really hate to hear the truth. Etcetera speaks a lot of truth for the most part and then spews bullshit sometimes,no doubt....that's my opinion.

  105. It isn't enough that Etcetera tells bitter truths. Good critics juxtapose their criticisms against a better reality. They inspire by showing the alternative to the situation they criticize. People who only critize are whiners. Those who formulate their ideas for an improved alternative lead and inspire. The best known critics in the US media, Bill O'Reilly, Maureen Dowd, et al don't just complain. They point out faults but suggest solutions too. Etcetera should propel himself to that level instead of submitting a bunch of gripes to Nigerians every week. Some of his insights are interesting, but we all get tired of someone who never has anything good to say.
