Team UNIBEN wins international award for vehicle innovation

Students of Faculty of Engineering, University of Benin, called Team UNIBEN, broke grounds in an international competition - Shell Eco Marathon in Europe and South Africa in Oct. 2014 and won a distinguishing award for 'most innovative vehicle design' throughout Africa with its made in Nigeria car called Ecocruise. Continue...

Shell Eco Marathon is a global competition that challanges students to build, test and drive fuel efficient vehicles. In other words, all the cars built are set to race and the vehicle that goes the farthest on the least amount of fuel automatically wins.

Team UNIBEN has previously also broken a record when they attended the Shell eco-marathon Europe in may 2014 with its first made in Nigeria car Tuketuke, making it the first team from Sub Saharan Africa to participate in the Shell eco-marathon. These two cars were handmade by these students alone in the workshop.

Tuketuke has innovative features like automatic windscreen wiper, button actuated gears, fingerprint access, ankara interior and fibreglass body. Both cars won all 10 technical and safety inspections, which I might add, are world standard, that qualified them to race on the track.

They are currently taking yet another challenge to build two cars that will participate in another shell eco-marathon in the Netherlands next year.

Students involved include: Osas Omijie, Festus ibidapo, adekola adeyemi, abdulmalik tajliad, Daniel okwoka, justice Oyemike, emmanuel Ajari, eloghosa iyamu, James itoro, Jennifer orji, Anne monye, Michael olukoya, and Victor adegboye, 13 students in total supervised by Professor Akii Ibhadode (Winner, NLNG Award for Science, 2010).

You can follow their complete story by liking their page on Facebook www.facebook.com/eco-tuketuke

  14. Dis is serious, looking at d 13 names i can see young nigerians from different part and also a muslim among dem achieving dis for d country. That show dat der is no problem wit ordinary nigerian, some group of pple created dis in d name of wat dey want to get or der selfish interest. Dis is a lesson for all of us and also beware of pple who will wan o use sentiment to gain our support.

  27. All these our telcos should recognize these guys and encourage them and not only endorse local musicians. Truthfully some of them sing rubbish.
Every youth now wants to be a singer. They are not learning anymore. We cannot only export music. It's not sustainable

  36. Congratulations to the team and I am truly proud of them and these along with that Dr that risked her life to save nigerians from ebola are the sorts of people that deserve national awards. Not those overfed looters and people who have not contributed anything to the society but questionable wealth... Also note that the team is composed of all tribes/genders showing that merit and not discrimination should be used as a yardstick... Congrats to them once again... More of these abeg - I don tire to dey read about psquare, wizkid and tonto dike rolex watch or hermes bags...

  44. I work at Shell in HQ and would really like to congratulate my fellow Nigerians. My people this is a HUGE achievement. This may look like it but its not just a toy car building contest. This is a global contest to actually develop an eco-friendly vehicle FROM SCRATCH. Can you imagine?? It attracts all the TOP science students in the best universities around the world. These great kids were alongside competitors from MIT, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge you name it they were there. It also has the highest attention from the top brass at Shell quite a few who attend the events and meet the kids. Some even ask the students to come and share their story of their development as lessons for their staff...can you imagine UNIBEN students getting the opportunity to go to The Hague or Houston and TEACH those engineers something new? kudos!! You have begun to secure your future at Shell, Mobil, etc or other major companies, Google etc, now finish school strong and believe in yourselves and shoot for the moon
