Dimeji Bankole loses 7 year old daughter to sickle cell disease

Former House of Reps Speaker Dimeji Bankole has lost his 7 year old daughter, Yewande Semiat Bankole to sickle cell. She died in a London hospital yesterday October 1st. The family released a statement today. Find it below...
"With gratitude to Almighty Allah and with heavy hearts we announce the demise of our daughter Yewande Semiat Bankole aged 7yrs at a London hospital. Yewande is the grand daughter of Chief Alani Suara Bankole and the daughter of Rt Hon. Dimeji Sabur Bankole.
Yewande was born with HbSS Sickle cell disease. She was a radiant girl who struggled with the disease. We originally managed her condition at a Lagos hospital but later transferred to a London hospital. Sadly we lost her at 10.30pm on Wednesday October 1st, 2014.
Her remains will be buried according to Islamic rites.
We wish to thank you for your prayers and support at this very trying time.
May almighty Allah make our affairs easy…
Signed: Bankole family

  41. An example of how uneducated Nigeria's ruling class is. Any sensible person who is AS will not marry another AS because you know the risk involved and wont intentionally create a child that will suffer most of it life while battling sickle cell disease.

  53. There s a cure to sickle cell now. It involves transfer of stem cells from donor to patient. Its can be done in Nigeria also (ubth) though its quite costly n treatment can last up to four months but still prevention is better than cure.

  70. Hmmm sad... rip little one.
Dear Libers... one cannot overemphasize the importance of checking out one's genotype compatibility with ones future partner. I don't think enough orientation is done about this to the youths. I know the churches have tried in this regard! But lots of couples do the trad weddn and there is no institution to enforce the genotype compatibility tests! Esp now that all our celebrities are baby daddies and Mamas, our youth are even emulating them...
All it takes to be free from this is a "BLOOD TEST"!
We all don't wanna know what it is to loose a child.. may this kinda calamity be far from us. Amen
Know your Genotype today! #wordforthe wise

  92. Bankole is a wicked man! In this day and age, who goes into wedlock with risk of producing children with sickle cell disease? Which kain yeye love be that? Out of greed, the woman married him. Now the child suffered before dying. Our greed and selfishness is legendary!

  96. Things like this makes me so sad.In this day and age nobody should have a child who is SS.This is not 1970.The only other way i can think this happened is if the child was born to a casual girl friend of Dimeji Bankole,so they didnt plan the child hence didnt ask the question of each others blood group. If that poor girl was born by his real wife,i will be shocked cos they should have known better to check each other's blood group. That poor child suffered for 7 years in great pain for nothing. All the same i wish the family strength to bear the ,loss. But pls people, know your status, there is too much pain both for the child and the family when you give birth to an SS Child!

Anonymous 12:42am you are the stupid goat of a friend......ignorant fools like u are pathetic.....do you know that in IVF you do not fertilize only one egg......u stimulate the woman and they get plenty eggs and fertilize them......sometimes you can get up to 10 that way u can choose the quality ones from it before implantation in the mother.....science has given people more broader options......I pray never to get a friend like u who will call me a goat behind my back......stupid idiot, fake friend....,
