Court acquits former PDP chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor, over N170m fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, today October 2nd discharged and acquitted former National Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Vincent Ogbulafor, of a N170m fraud charge brought against him in 2001 by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC).

Mr Ogbulafor who served as Minister of Special Duties in 2001 was alleged to have connived with one Mr Emeka Ebila, the then secretary of the National Economic Intelligence Committee, to defraud the Federal government of N170m through payments to contractors for jobs that were not done.

The National Economic Intelligence Committee, NEIC, was a body under Mr Ogbulafor's ministry set up for the verification and payment of debts owed to local contractors by the Federal Govt.

Delivering his judgement today, presiding judge, Justice Ishaq Bello said evidences brought before him showed Mr Ogbulafor had no connection with the fraudulent activities that went on at the NEIC. The judge went on to discharge Mr Ogbulafor and sentenced Mr Ebila, who came into court on a wheelchair to 5 years imprisonment. He said a confessional statement tendered before the court without any objection from his lawyer, was a corroboration of the allegations leveled against him by the ICPC.

  15. When you are in the bad book of the government, you get convicted. When you are in the good book, you will be acquitted, or the charges against you may be dropped.. In Nigeria, ANYTHING can be arranged and ANYTHING bought, justice being one.

  34. do we really have a high court cos all the top fraud cases are being thrown out and acquitted abi is something wrong with the judges or are they servicing the judges with money i cant understand. and we have an attorney general of the federation what exactly is the person doing when all theses cases are thrown out we indeed are finished in this country. one day all the money that they steal would finish and then what?

  36. 13 years court case and 5 years conviction, rubbish, is the right to a speedy trial not part of out constitution? And were the accused detained all this time? When we start being a country that is about the bottom line things will change, the bottom line is "show me the money" if someone obtains money by any illegal means the investigation shouldn't end till the trace every kobo, the part is still in cash, the part that is property, the part that was shared to wife, mistresses and whores etc
