Graphic photo: Very strange baby born in Benue state

A LIB reader based in Benue state sent in this graphic pic of a strange baby born in the state recently. According to the sender, the baby was allegedly born on Friday September 5th in Wanune Local Government Area of the state. I've not been able to verify this but check out what the baby looks like after the cut. *Warning Graphic Content*

    1. What is anencephaly?
Anencephaly, also known as “open skull,” is a birth defect in which the major parts of the brain, scalp, and skull of the fetus do not form completely as it is developing in the womb.
Anencephaly occurs when the neural tube, a narrow channel in the fetus that normally closes to form the spinal cord and brain, does not close properly between the third and fourth weeks of pregnancy. An infant who is born with anencephaly has some or most of the brain missing. These infants are unconscious, cannot feel, and are usually blind and deaf.
In many cases, some brain tissue may be exposed because parts of the skull are missing. Some infants may have a primitive brain stem at birth. They may seem to respond to sound or touch, but their reactions are involuntary and are caused by the action of the brain stem.
Anencephaly is a fatal condition. Infants with anencephaly are stillborn in about 75% of cases. Newborns who survive die within several hours, days, or weeks.

    1. What causes anencephaly?
The exact causes of anencephaly are unknown. A lack of folic acid (vitamin B9) before and during pregnancy may increase the chance of neural tube defects, such as anencephaly or spina bifida (a birth defect in which the spine is exposed). If a woman takes certain prescription drugs during pregnancy, such as drugs for diabetes, this may increase the risk of having an infant with anencephaly.
In about 90% of cases, the parents of an anencephalic infant do not have a family history of the disorder. However, if the parents have had a child who was born with anencephaly, they have a greater chance of having another baby with this condition. The recurrence rate for anencephaly is 4-5%, and rises to 10-13% if the parents have had two other children with anencephaly.

  51. It's a condition known as ANENCEPHALY - literally, 'no brain'. Of course, there would be other defects in the body. The last time I saw this was when I studied Morbid Anatomy as a medical student fifteen years ago! Truly a rarity.

  53. It's a congenital anomaly. Folic acid during pregnancy can reduce risk factors. The doctors should have realized from all the scans and everything when she Wuz pregnant so they wuddav performed a medical abortion that's if she even went for proper checkups while pregnant. This is pure torture for the woman.

  71. Its a medical condition called anencephally where the baby has no brain- literaly- or is without parts of the brain, skull and scalp.
What i wonder is how this "reader" got this picture. If the person is a health worker then he/she needs to be purnished for this intrusion and recklessness!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous Mitch says...
Linda there's nothing strange about this unfortunate baby. Its just a malformation. Sometimes things don't go according to plan even with nature.
I wonder why and how all the scans the mother had through her pregnancy didn't detect the problem to give the parents the choice of terminating or carrying the pregnancy to full term and delivery.
Besides, does your source say if the baby is alive or not? Because this degree of head and brain distortion I doubt it will survive even if the parents are prepared to shower it with all the love in the world.

  82. It's not strange at all. The baby has anencephaly. Sad. Will eventually die if not already dead.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Jesus Christ! I think the baby's mother probably took pills (abortion pills) during pregnancy leading to this abnormality.

    ReplyDelete
  84. This is anencephaly. it is a birth defect.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Sad. Abnormal baby probably a variant of anencephaly, defect in brain development. I'm sure he can't survive. This may be prevented by goin 4 early antenatal care, n ladies should take folic acid daily even b4 conception

    ReplyDelete
  86. That is what happens where there is no antenatal scanning. A fetal scan would have picked up this congenital anomaly very easily.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Linda ikeji this is 2014, biko and you are educated. This is not a " strange baby". Google anencephaly and educate your readers.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Let's no wallow in ignorance
This baby clearly has Anencephaly, failure of the brain to develop. The cannot survive outside of the womb.
Usually this is identified very early in pregnancy with a complete Ultrasound of the baby. But you know Naija now

    ReplyDelete
  89. Anencephaly- absence of part of d scalp, skull, brain, the baby just didn't develop normally inutero,

    ReplyDelete
  90. This is anencephaly, a well described congenital malformation with absence of large parts of the skull and brain. The mother obviously did not have antenatal scans and if she did the ultrasonographer needs retraining.

    ReplyDelete
  92. This is not strange.
It is a congenital malformation called anencephaly that would have been picked up on ultrasound scan at 12weeks of pregnancy and the parents warned about it or offered a termination of pregnancy very early on as it is not compatible with life after birth. We have no antenatal screening care in my country! God help us.

  132. Linda, this is a medical condition where the fetus is not fully formed, after due term. It is possible that said "strange" baby was born prematurely. You can see that the cranium (upper skull) is not present and the brain is not fully formed. That baby will have 2 weeks tops to live.

  138. Linda, This is a congenital malformation called anencephaly. we see it rarely, I've only seen about 3 cases since i started practice in 2009. we just pray it doesn't happen, but it still happens once in a blue moon. The brain is completely gone. The baby may survive for some few days before it goes back to God. They can only help d child by baptizing him/her and giving d much needed care until that time comes to go. Let's learn to thank God no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Being parents is not all about getting pregnant. Any animal can get pregnant and give birth. But parents should spend time and research about pregnancy. Take lots of calcium, iron and phosphorus rich food when you are pregnant. It helps development. It seems the skull is not fully developed which is a clear deficiency in calcium and phosphorus rich food. I might be wrong though because I'm a man and never been pregnant but my simple integrated science and biology knowledge prompted my opinion. We still need to make primary education to jss 3 free and mandatory.
