MBGN and other beauty pageants should be banned- Etcetera writes

Etcetera now shares his opinion about pageants in Nigeria. He thinks it should be banned...lol. That won't happen. Pageants have been around for decades and will be around for many years to come. I absolutely do not agree with anything he wrote here but read for yourselves and share your thoughts.
Every year, thousands of girls compete in various beauty pageants across Nigeria. While the organisers may believe that they are helping our girls to feel “beautiful,” they are also in many other ways causing significant damage to the self-esteem and body perception of other girls. The girl who won may feel as beautiful as the prettiest woman ever created, but what about the girls who didn’t win? How do they feel? I spoke with some past contestants of one of the pageants (the girls that didn’t win) and asked them why they think they didn’t win, and this is what some of them said, “Because I wasn’t pretty enough,” “Because the organisers didn’t like me,” “Because it is a racket and who knows what she has offered,” etc. Things like this inspire jealousy, low self-esteem, and other self destructive behaviours such as self isolation, social anxiety, eating disorder, drug abuse, personality disorder, bitterness and social phobia among our girls. Continue...
Beauty pageants in Nigeria should be sanctioned. Where do we draw the line between “beauty pageant” and “prostitution?” These pageant organisers and agencies are doing nothing but exploiting our girls in order to make money. The society is becoming so twisted and our sense of right and wrong is becoming so skewed. You gather politicians and paedophiles to watch girls in G-strings and bikinis wriggling their waists all in the name of making a show for TV. Are the contestants always meant to lie about their beliefs and relationship status in order to get a good score? Have we totally lost sight of what is morally right and wrong?

Beauty contests seem pointless to me. To tell a woman to submit to someone else’s definition of beauty is crazy. So when the contest is over and someone wins, does that immediately make them more beautiful than the rest? Are they more beautiful according to a panel of judges? I think it is a sick idea and the money spent organising these beauty contests can be more useful for other causes.
Beauty pageant has been nothing but degrading and harmful to our women and children. It turns our women into objects to be used and played with. It makes the women that don’t make it through feel bad about their looks and even those that do get through feel like they still have to do something more to look prettier. These beauty pageants also set false standards about how beautiful women are supposed to look. So, just because a woman is thin with certain looks, it makes them more beautiful? And women that are thick or big can’t be pretty or beautiful? All they have succeeded in saying is that beauty is only skin deep. Well my friend, it isn’t.

Isn’t it bad enough seeing young Nigerian girls forcing eating disorders on themselves just to be perceived as prettier? ‘I am so fat and it is just not healthy’ has become the chorus of every girl on the street. Parents have become very competitive trying to make their daughters more beautiful than their neighbours’ by forcing their children to make unnecessary adjustments to their bodies to look better than their peers. Now we see six-year-olds having hair extensions, permanent mascara and waxed eyebrows. Do these children really need to be exposed to such things to know that they are beautiful? Do we need our children to think that their looks are judged and if they don’t stand out among their peers, they are not beautiful?

Can a woman ever have a sincere appreciation of her body when the only time she is ever praised for her looks is after hours of preparation with dozens of beauty products? Beauty pageants can only judge what we can see at first glance, and women are so much more than that. The society needs to protect the children from the sick idea of assembling girls in camps and tasking them with over-sexualised dance routines. These beauty pageants can only ingrain into our women that in order to be beautiful, they need to be skinny, which for some body types is incredibly unhealthy. Sincerely, what is the moral behind these beauty pageant shows? How have they helped the society in general? With sports, we can talk about mental discipline, fitness and advance body control. For all the money that beauty pageants cost to organise, is it really worth it? Of all the things you could expose our girls to, are pageants really the best thing out there?

When you teach people that beauty is only on the outside, it can cause major problems, not only health problems but social, physical and mental problems also. If a beautiful girl enters a pageant and doesn’t win, she may begin to consider herself ugly or fat or too skinny. Beauty pageants create a lot of problems that can affect not only the girl but the people she surrounds herself with.

Women have always demanded respect from men. Not only should they demand it, I think they deserve it. But why make them scamper around in G-strings and bikinis showing off their bodies, knowing that men are going to go “gaga” and lick their lips. I don’t want to sound disrespectful, but can you blame the men? Men will always be men. We can’t change our nature, but you know what we can change. We can change the fact that our women are naked and competing to be “the most beautiful in the world.” We shouldn’t endorse beauty contest because it brings money to some people. I believe that there are still a handful of women out there that share the sentiment that beauty contests are wrong and give men the wrong idea of what a “true wife” looks like.

Its just about the money to the point that even if u dont win u can make more money than the winner nd trust me a lot of them know this. Its only those from wealthy families eg Adaeze Yobo that can enter nd win based on who know who. The rest use sex. Ask Munachi Abi.

  31. Too long to read this gibberish, especially when you are repeating yourself and your article is aimless! Now we know why he couldn't make it in the music industry because he couldn't compete so he ran away and became a bitter critic! When he says losing affects those who did not win, I am forced to think this guy is nuts, when the said girls went into the competition; key 'competition', she knew it was 50-50, either she won or she lost. So if she allows it affect her psyche, she only has herself to blame! The current most beautiful face has being trying for years to win a pageant, if she had given up after her first 2 competition, would she be face of Anambra today? Yes there are a lot of under handed activities going on at these pageants, but it is something not peculiar to Nigeria. Yes I am against objectifing of women, but beauty pageants have existed and will exist for a long time, but sanity is gradually creeping into the industry, like they now have pageants for plus sizes and model don't have to be rail thin anymore! As far back as the time of Cinderella, there have being beauty pageants, so if we banned everything that offended us or was not done properly, I assure you Nigeria would be in the stone ages. So my brother, pick up your pen and write something meaning like your failed music career and why you haven't tried again.

Making ourselves objects instead of being women of substance...don't get me wrong I am talking about pageants and not modeling.. Modeling in general shows a woman is beautiful anyway. Skinny, plus sized, fully covered, exposed, we have models with everyone's kind of body type and choice of clothes, but pageants ...i mean have you seen Toddlers and Tiaras... Sad sad show. If I take chimamanda and an ex MBGN to a company, that ex MBGN would become a marketer and chimamanda would be a manager. It's all about how u make men see u. Are u an object of sexual pleasure or are u a woman of substance. Linda don't be bias cos u were a model. That man has some points. I'm not saying it should be stopped. It appears that men are beginning to see some ladies as objects rather than humans and this is because those ladies let them. Otherwise why would they parade themselves half-naked to be admired and judged? I just don't get it!!!.

Ladies, you need to love and appreciate yourself first. Almighty God made you in His image and called you "Beautiful". Since God already says so, that settles it!! You don't need to parade yourself before any man to prove your beauty or appreciate you. You are beautiful just the way you are.

  96. I agree with you on banning this stupid, unnecessary, unfounded pageants. Its merely a means of prostitution and a way to demean women by watching them parade in next to nothing. Its almost like a show for men to pick their choice.
This is the only country that has over 1000 pageants that range from MBGN, to MISS Face, Miss leg, Miss peace, ms etc....nonsense
These pageants are baseless, dont reflect any form on intelligence or self worth.
I actually blame the parents for letting their children become spectacles of sex and degradation!

I concur that stress should be put on different aspects of intelligence and not what others perceive as right. Even Countries we imitate has series of areas that meet other needs... How about promoting the Opera and different genres of Literature and Science? Or do I have to recall that band wagon 'these-days' churches are worse in hypnosis and psychological twisting of folks, so much to say n' weep for- but suffice to say for recall: "There is INDEED God!

  105. I agree with a lot of point he is making here. but I do believe that while a lot of this pageant are exploitive, some really focus on the overall personality of a woman. they make sure that beauty is much more than skin deep in their pageant. stricter rules are needed to ensure that beauty doesn't equate to prostitution and exploitation.

  126. Biko, what's the sense and rationale behind the overhyped musings of a sad and depressed man? Human beings, not just women, feel inferior or suffer from low self esteem every other day not just from physical attributes and preferences. In fact, I'll prefer that one suffers from the aforementioned from physical beauty than intellectual or talent. While in school, right from play group right through university, parents, fellow students and even parents have come down on kids who are not 'taking first' in class'. At least, physically, you can take care or do something about your deficiencies but we all know that humans have different intellectual dispositions. You can't be as smart as the next person but you can be as good looking. Hdjdidhdjjdi needs to understand that. About being naked and whatnot, girls run around the streets naked everyday so why not do that and get paid while at it? Really. And suddenly, he's had an epiphany that beauty pageants should be banned in Nigeria okwia? Some years ago, in Abuja, those "senseless organizers who waste money organizing pageants" paid this boffun to perform and he sis. I guess their money in his account wasn't immoral huh?! And why is it I. Nigeria he wants pageants stopped? Make we no copy oyibo people again ne? Is that what he wants? And he's frying his hair like them. Why does t he go Djimon on his head?! Ewu Afghanistan. In fact Linda, I will email you a vn venting my displeasure with this man's spews before my hand suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome. Lol

  127. I'm sorry but I totally agree with him, we have to agree that beauty goes beyond blonde and make-up, to be beautiful is something deep far beyond artificial materials used to make one beautiful ( as the idea), we should see beauty as very significant, soulful n spiritual and that way it reflects with outward appearance and so if you're that, it is acknowledged by all known to them. We need a society where African beauty is characterized as pure, not women covering their God-given natural hair with extension they claim are more beautiful than theirs, we need to be liberated fro the shackles of colonial mentality and free ourselves, I may not agree with some of the writer: Chimamanda Adichie's beliefs but I like the fact that she is natural, wears her natural hair and she is a proud, strong African woman, also that she speaks without faking her accent this is something we can all benefit from and not be left out by feeling down because of the fake ones out there, we need to embrace ourselves and let others embrace us as we are, only then can our lives truly have a great meaning and the blessings it entails be fully given. Bless..

Because I know some of these pageant winners.. Nd trust me.. It is not about doin good.. It's bout being in music videos... Some of these music video vixens.. I recognize them from pageants .... These girls r just after fame. The girl Tht went and had Paul okoyes child.. Wasn't she a pageant contestant.... Wt was she doing at such a young age in bed with an older guy?Does somebody lyk Tht seem lyk. Genuine person to u? Pageants r just an opportunity to make other girls feel bad Tht they will never be as skinny as another... Pageants hv auditions.. Nd if u don't make the cut.... 139. OMG I agree with him! I remember when you posted something about a pageant a while back and I remember posting in the comments that pageantry actually fulfills nothing.

He is actually right. It is just that how he went about it may not have appealed to people. If they had made the pageantry that any woman can go if she has fulfilled so and so qualifications(not related to the physical), then beaut pageants will have some merit. What I don't get is the need for the people to wear bikinis(half naked), dance in skimpy clothes..The question we should be asking ourselves is this: who started this practice, and what do you think were their TRUE intentions before it was being copied by others all over.

You guys just refuse to think. And it' really sad, because it's obvious

  140. 141. Awesome! Some may disagree but facts are scarce... The beauty in every woman goes beyond cosmetic and makeup but real beauty lies within self discipline and control, women should be celebrated not to be demoralised, giving education not permutations!

    ReplyDelete
  142. I also think so too, its becoming highly proliferated, miss dat, miss dis....

  143. What nonsense! Did women ask u 4 this!? Any girl who thinks like that, it's her own opinion and any man who judges by what a girl who won a paegent looks like then it's his own stupid opinion. Real men dnt judge like that. You wanna fight 4 women? First as an individual, respect them. Fight so they can get legal rights in court to get their kids in the case of divorce, fight against molestation, rape n other vile nonsense, fight so that women can smeday be governors in Nigeria. Ur own is 2 talk rubbish. I have a host of friends who have cntested 4 stuff n none of them cmplained winner or nt, they we're just happy. There is a little jealousy in every game. We can just ban football n any cmpetitive stuff as well. Bunkum!!! ----C21

  145. Dear linda..haven't been on your blog for a while..missed it though..now to this live cannon waiting to explode..mr etcetera...I don't appreciate your point of view...to some extent you made sense but you lost perspective along the line...where you got the idea that the girl who wins is the prettiest girl is wrong, secondly the wearing of G-strings is untrue..if you watch pageants like you claim you do...in Nigeria...girls in pageants don't wear G-strings...please pay close attention when watching..thirdly,in very game there is a winner...everyone can't win a game..hence the term "competition" now if you do not win in a pageant and you think its because you are not pretty enough then you should never have climbed on stage...because you lack self-esteem...that has nothing to do with you not winning or the pageant as a whole..that's something you work on as a lady..and no one is asking anyone to submit to their idea of beauty...take a look at agbani ...she won not only because she was beautiful...but she was intelligent and smart and portrayed her country's culture...now that's what pageants are all about..the inner and outer beauty of a lady..next time you pick up your pen to write do proper research.

  153. hmmmm, somehow i agree and somehow i don't agree. the part that the other girls who did not win feel bad, yea its very normal to feel bad if you don't win in a competition, but they should also realize that in a competion its only one person that takes the crown, it doesn't matter how beautiful others are. just like in a football competition, only one team wins, no matter how strong others are. also its not only their physical beauty, they have to answer some questions to test their intelligence, their poise, confidence all go into consideration and then the votes from the audience too are combined. i disagree with the person who said something about the judges choosing only the fair girls, that's a lie, Sylvia nduka was MBGN 2011, she is dark, isabella Ayuk, 2012 is also dark. i don't know what else to agree or not agree with Ectera, but i think some of the botbellied organisers take advantage of these girls who are below 20yrs, promising them fame, good life etc. ok bye

  155. I agree with him 90 percent on this one. however, to ban the contest is not the best because lots of girls are also happy to partake and we have some girls that take modeling as their profession, which mean such contests is an inspiration for them. The process should be put into screening and well monitored to avoid room for exploitation, sexual harassment and lots more.
