Dr Dre set to be hip hop's first billionaire as Apple is set to buy Beats Electronics for $3.2bn

Super producer and rapper Dr Dre is set to become Hip Hop's first billionaire as Apple Inc. is close to sealing a multi-billion dollar deal to purchase Beats Electronics, the company he founded with music producer Jimmy Lovine in 2008. The company produces the popular Beats By Dre headphones and also runs a music streaming service, which Apple is more interested in than the headphones itself. If this happens, it will be Apple's biggest acquisition till date. ($3.2billion)

Apple wants a music-on-demand service to rival Spotify, which is a digital music service that gives people access to millions of songs.

It was announced today that the acquisition could be announced as early as next week.

Last night, singer Tyrese posted a video where Dr Dre proclaimed himself the first billionaire in Hip Hop. Dr Dre is currently worth $550million. See the video after the cut...

In the video, Tyrese said:
"Billionaire boys club for real, homie. The Forbes list just changed.… Sh*t just changed!”
 Dr Dre added:
“The first billionaire in hip hop, right here from the motherf*cking West Coast!”

Congrats to Dre. I think you are wrong about the music streaming service being the reason for the purchase. i-Tunes radio (apple music streaming service) averages over 20 million daily users while Beats has just about hundred thousand active users on its music streaming platform. If they are going to buy up any company for music streaming, it will be Pandora which is most the popular streaming service. I think it is more about the hardware, kids love the beats brand and it complements Apple products. You need a headphone to listen to music on your i-phone or i-pad or i-pod.

What was the one device that changed Apple's fortunes? I think this is no-brainer, it was the iPod (Yes, iPhone took it to the world's most valuable companies) but it was the iPod that changed their fortunes. Since, the launch of the iPod and iTunes, Apple has shown not significant movement in advancing technology of Music. Whether it is the experience of hearing music or buying music, it has been a constant arena for Apple with very little movement.

Therefore, while other companies are focusing on advancing their cameras and optics (Nokia clearly wants to sell their Lumia only for its Low Light Imaging and Samsung's S5 intends to sell itself by a very fast and accurate auto-focus), no one is focusing on one aspect of the phone that is used the maximum. Travel in an public transport, and you would find virtually 75% of the population pluggdd-in to their earphones and headphones. Is any company focusing on improving their experience? Apparently not!

From my perspective, this move of Apple seems to be driven by a brilliant understanding of the gaps in the technology and its market, and it seems that this should pay off to Apple in a better way that SiRi did!
