South Africa's only black billionaire donates half his fortune 2 charity

South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe has donated half of his $2.65 billion to charity. The beneficiary is the Motsepe Foundation, which was founded in 1999 by the billionaire and his wife, Precious.
"I decided quite some time ago to give at least half of the funds generated by our family assets to uplift poor and other disadvantaged and marginalised South Africans.
"I was also a beneficiary of various people, black and white, in South Africa and in the US who educated, trained, mentored and inspired me and whose faith and belief in me contributed to my success in my profession, business and elsewhere. The same can be said about my wife, Precious, and we are deeply indebted to them and many more.
"Most of our donations have been private, but the need and challenges are great, and we hope that our Giving Pledge will encourage others in South Africa, Africa and other emerging economies to give and make the world a better place." Motsepe said
Giving Pledge is a campaign founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010, which encourages wealthy people to donate their fortune to charity. As of November 2012, 91 billionaires - mostly Americans, have committed to the pledge. Motsepe is the first African to do this...but I have a strong feeling that Dangote or Adenuga will be the next. Just watch! *Yimz* Hehe!

  15. i am very impressed, cos black people are by their nature extremely selfish..... having said that, i hope this is not a tax evasion scheme, as we can read that the money is going to their foundation *give with one hand and collect with another tinz* in the present world we live in, one cant help but be skeptical about every amazing selfless gesture...

  16. adenuga and dangote next? dream on. Nigerians r too selfish and self serving to donate anything meaningfull to charity, they will only donate that kind of money to their pastor.

  37. I say at this rate, people in charity will become richer than those that are not benefiting from charity. This a good gesture and of course you know if he did it with a good heart and the right reasons, God will surely give it back to him. JK Rowling donated most of her wealth to charity removing her billionaire status. I guess it is cool. O!!! Baba God let me reach the level that I can do the same. In fact i have reached it already in Faith.

  49. Linda,

Pardon my choice of words o,"but U drink?early morning sunday U don shark something?"

U think a Nigerian RICH man that is praying that no1 else should be like him "go come carry calculator, calculate all hin assets, come split am into 2 say hin give charity?" Laye,I don't think so!

In real sense, what is it that U can really and truly point too that the so called "RICH NIGERIANS" have done to better the lives of a low class Nigerian?they don't own charities, they don't own school that underprivileged can go too free, they don't own hospital or even pay part of hospital bills, non do they put boreholes in the rural areas to help with their clean water generation and Linda,do U know that when U work (as a young contractor) for most of the rich men, they end up not paying. Ur complete contract sum? YES,I am saying that from experience and who U won go report them too?

In Nigeria,it is the poor that thinks of helpling the poor...like that NYSC girl that built hostel for fellow NYSC members!do know the numbers of RICH men from Kaduna state?and non. ever thought of that?

To me o,the rich are selfish and are of no good use to the Nigerian society...Bite me if U think otherwise! :D

  61. I have a problem with this, if the very few black billionaires we have start giving up their fortunes there will be no black billionaires left?
Selfish reasoning I know but he shouldn't have done this. Lets be confident on the level of wealthy African business men that exist before we start throwing the money about.
That said this dude was likely to piss about his money anyways. $800 million was shaved off his wealth down to poor management. might be the reason he decided to give it up.

  73. Motsepe may be South Africa's first, and only, black billionaire, but he is hardly the continent's wealthiest man. That title goes to Nigerian industrial magnate Aliko Dangote, with an estimated net worth of about R113.6 billion. On a continent that consistently ranks as the worst-off in terms of quality of life, it remains to be seen if its wealthiest citizens will join Motsepe in giving away half their fortune to the less fortunate.
