Corper attacked with acid, ex-boyfriend attacker still roaming free

Her name is Onyinye Blessing Agu and in February this year, an ex-boyfriend poured acid on her for ending their relationship two months earlier.

Onyinye was a corper, serving in Badagry West LCDA in Lagos State when the unfortunate incident happened to her.

The victim  became a born again christian, decided to live a new life and didn't think being in a relationship was appropriate, so she ended the relationship she was in with Ifeanyi Collins Ude in December 2010. Two months later, Ifeanyi, who's based in Enugu came to Lagos to visit Onyinye, with evil intentions.

As Onyinye was seeing off her once abusive boyfriend, Ifeanyi brought out a container from the plastic bag he was carrying, poured acid on Onyinye, and ran off.

Before Onyinye could raise alarm, Ifeanyi had disappeared, but was caught many hours later by the police as he made to leave Nigeria for Republic of Benin.

The acid attack has left the young woman partially deformed. From the right side of her neck to the right hand and down to the upper end of her right breast were affected. Today, the wounds have healed, the scar turned deep brown, making bold patches on her skin. The neck region is partly glued with a little untanned patch where the wound has not healed completely.

The major complaint she has is her loss of confidence in the police, which she believes did a shoddy job of Ifeanyi’s arrest by releasing him after his initial appearance at the Oyingbo Chief Magistrate’s Court (Court 12) in April. At his first arraignment, Onyinye was still in hospital. But on May 20, July 13 and 15, the subsequent adjourned dates she was at the court and saw Ifeanyi brought in to face prosecution. “He saw me on those days. On May 20, he was brought by the police. But after that they released him. So on those days of appearance in July he came on his own, but never behaved like he saw me. He has never shown any remorse, and rather exhibited his defiance to my uncle who he picked quarrels with at the court premises.

“In those days in court, the matter was never heard. We just left with a new date on October 12. After the last day in court, the NYSC lawyer who had been assisting me called to say that the police released Ifeanyi on grounds that we would settle out of court and find ways of making up. But till date, neither Ifeanyi nor his family ever made any peace move to me or my family. I reliably gathered that he is back in Enugu walking free and doing his business. In fact, to compound my problem, he has called me some number of times. He still threatens me with more attacks unless I marry him. I had refused to pick his calls until the lawyer encouraged me to hear him out. But as he asks me how I am, the next would be a return to the usual threat, and on one of such calls, he told me he is happy I feel the pains of the acid burn as he feels the pains of my leaving him,” Onyinye alleged.

I have a lot of pains and burdens on my body and mind now. One of the pains is that while I was serving the nation, I had this problem and the NYSC did nothing to make sure the assailant was prosecuted. I have got no justice up till now. I am fed up with the judicial system that has not tried Ifeanyi till date or the police that released him to go free. I doubt the possibility of making him come back to Lagos for the trial.” On seeing her now, she is like at 50 percent depreciation from the elegant figure you see in this picture she took at the NYSC camp. The acid really got at her personality, far deeper than the skin.

Onyinye still remains on medication till date. When she was newly discharged from hospital, she used to take an injection once a week that costs N1,400 a dose. Now it’s a monthly affair at the same cost, in addition to antibiotics, analgesics, anti-histimines and a cream that helps to flatten the thick scalds.
The injection is what stops further growth.
“I have to tell you that I have another major concern apart from the denial of justice. I am afraid I could be a victim of discrimination by employers who might distance me because of the ugly scalds on me, and what about my future of getting a man to marry with all these on me.”

The graduate of Economics from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology says what she needs badly is assistance from concerned people – the state governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime, the Youths Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, human rights groups and the public to raise N2.6m to enable her have corrective plastic surgery in an Indian hospital according to her doctor.

Should you feel concerned to come to Onyinye’s assistance and restore her physically and psychologically, she could be reached on 08037811215. Such assistance would dry her tears and make her live her normal life once again.

Culled from Sun.

Hopefully, some NGO will take this up!

  12. my advice is ladies pls do not think that you can use any man and dump him.......

    likewise men........

the consequence is nothing but death.......from the beginning if u do not want him.....do not continue...

it is better to date a man who gives u 1, 000 a month and have ur life than one business do that would destry ur life....

for those of u who complain about the law...there is no hope for africa.....

God can only change a nation through a man.....
if the churches and all of u biz men and students refuse to call for fashola to be the next nigerian president.......then the death of nigeria is near

I THOUGHT QUITE FRANKLY THAT MOST OF THE EVIL WILL BE FROM WESTERNERS, HOWEVER IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY OBVIOUS THAT MOST TWISTED CRIMES ARE COMING FROM NIGERIA......WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON??? THE WORLDLINESS AND WHOREMONGERY IS UNIMAGINABLE!! WHERE DO THESE CLOWNS GET ACID SO EASILY FROM?? SHOULD IT NOT BE A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE???

THE HOOLIGANISM AND LAWLESSNESS, HAS BECOME MIND BOGGLING!!!

My own question is where do they get acid from? it's scary that it's obtainable just like that.

  23. Deep Soul, pls stop talking without thinking. Their is crime everywhere but justice is done more often than not. It takes the police 6 mins to get to my house when I call 999 here. It's not about the crime alone, it's the fact that the criminals get away with it. Duhhhhhhh

  27. Ibo guys can be very barbaric. You'll see a lot of Ibo girls marrying yoruba guys, but you'll be hard pressed to find a yoruba girl whose family will let her marry an Ibo guy. And no, I'm not a tribalist, just a realist.

lol! the only reason Yoruba girls are not marrying Igbo guys is because it is rare to actually find an Igbo guy who wants to marry a Yoruba girl.

As in, none of my Igbo male friends have those plans. Not at all. Whilst the Yoruba guys I know are not bothered and just want a good girl. That's the honest truth, ask a friend.

From personal experience, I am an Igbo girl. I find alot of Yoruba guys tend to toast, even when available Yoruba girls are in our midst.

    lets be serious in here.PLS

The post has nothing to do with culture, and everything to do with the change in time. People no longer fear God. Godly homes no longer exist.

  31. Nigerians are really getting me peeed!the way i see it is this: we are practically providing everything for our selves, eg water(borehole) electricity(generator. So we might as well provide our own security by owning firearms! In which case we do not need a government. Otherwise, lets wage an arab style revolution to cleanse our country of these rulers!!

  32. You all seem surprised! Lets look at it this way: with the number of churches in nigeria and the number is rising everyday, it suggests that most nigerians are christians right? so where does all these evil come from? simple: the churches are now filled with native doctors, cultists ritualists, fraudsters all rolled up into what we call pastors!!! People please read the Bible yourselves and get to know the man behind the book!!

  33. Na wa o.I cant believe you people have managed to turn this to a tribe thing?People irrespective of their race, tribe and religion have the ability to be wicked.Shebi it is my fellow yoruba man, Arowolo, that maimed and killed his wife? Tribe has nothing to do with it. Oro gbo gbo yi ti su mi o!

  35. As much as I sympathize with the girl, we must all understand that to entrench true democracy and the rule of law, we must obey the law. The accused has certain rights such as bail. if the offense is bailable, there is nothing the police can do after the case has gone to court. Its Sad but that's the reality. He has to be found guilty and sentenced before he can serve a jail time. Lets try and think like civilized people. The judicial process should be swift also. I feel bad for her. There is no justification for such vengeful acts in a nation where most of the citizens claim to be either Christians or muslims. For those talking about pouring acid on the man or revolting, you areas guilty as the accused. There is no justification WHATSOEVER for such action.

  39. Since some of you Yoruba Girls have decided to leave the matter and attack Igbo Men I want to categorically say here that the reason Yoruba Men marry Igbo Women is that they have discovered that the Igbo Girls are better than their Yoruba girls ,name it, beauty or character. The yoruba Girls flirt a lot and dont stay in marriage and the Igbo man knows it ,after all we are all in Lagos here observing.

Then again the yoruba girls are dying for Igbo men cos they are hardworking , they are loving and tend to keep their marriage and not one woman having four issues from four different men. Tunde papa go different while bimbo papa go different. Attack me and you will receive another bombshell.

  41. Think someone had mentioned this but I'd like to reecho it for our ladies to hear...

I totally abhor what this guy did and I really feel for the girl but she's not entirely blameless. I gather that he sponsored her in school and she strung him along till she no longer needed him even after promising to marry him. The guy then got enraged and committed this heinous crime

Ladies, please note that it is not every guy that you can chop his money and clean mouth. Some people do not go and lick their wounds quietly. They must seek to exact their own pound of flesh. Be careful the kind of guys you hook up with.

    ReplyDelete
  42. All these talks about chop mouth clean mouth is really painful to hear. Does it in mean that in a relationship there is nothing that either the girl has done for the guy? If he sponsored her through university while they are dating with the intention that will both will marry afterwards, and things never happened as planned. Should it warrant such act?

The problem is that people are always quick to point out what they have done for the other in a relationship when it did not worked as planned. Life is about changes, we can only talk about today in some cases without knowing what actually will happen tomorrow even with the people that claimed that we will love till the end of time.

Especially, in a society like ours where men always count what they did to a woman without knowing that whether or not it eventually leads to marriage, the relationship that both parties shared at that happy times are a reflection of their contributions. The man may contribute finacially while the woman may have another strong attributes that helps build such relationship. My point is that everyone who is in a relationship has one way or the other they contribute to such relationship. If people should be counting of what they did for either their partners, then what will become of those who got married, shared everything together, but divorced after may be one party might have contributed immensely in the life of the other.

So, the good thing about relationship is to know when to quit. It does not matter in which ever way the other person has contributed because it helps to save a lot of damages. If people who married can divorce based on reasons best known to them other than that they are willing to share to the third party, then why would those in the process of been married not call it quick instead of deceiving yourself or the other and be in denial because of what the other has done.

Life is about challenges, although it might happen the way we don't want them but that does not end the future will want for ourselves unless death strikes.

  43. @ Anon September 27, 2011 10:16 PM:

You are making a big mistake in what you have said. There is what should be and there is what is. What you have just put down is what should be and what happened to the girl is what is.

Make no mistake, I am not justifying his action; I'm only explaining it. It may very well be that the girl had dishonestly promised to marry him which then made him to spend all his money, time and emotion sponsoring her in school only for her to dump him when she didn't need his money anymore. No matter what she had brought into the relationship, what she did is dishonest. This goes both ways anyway; oftentimes, some dude string some woman along under the pretense that they'll marry only to dump her at the last minute after all her emotional and sometimes financial investment. It is not right no matter what gender does it. Some women have been known to hire assassins to off the guy. Like I said before, not everybody would go and lick their wounds quietly. Some will seek revenge in whatever way or form.

So my dear, in order to guard against being a victim of such horrendous crimes, it is better that you are straight up with whosoever about the status of the relationship. It is just like rape. Inasmuch as no girl deserves it, you just do not wear micro minis and hook up with some strange guys in the club or anywhere and follow them to their apartment. Really, they should not rape you if you do not want to have sex but if they do, you can't say that you did not walk into that situation with your eyes wide opened. Bottom-line is, always avoid danger when you can.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is unfair the authorities have to prove justice to the victims, why are some people soo wickid.
